No evidence: HC acquits 6 accused in human trafficking & rape case

Bhopal: A division bench of the Madhya Pradesh high court acquitted six accused, including four women, who were sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Pocso court in Chhindwara for human trafficking and the rape of a minor. During the hearing, the court found that the mother of the minor girl lodged a complaint about her 'missing' daughter almost a year after she went missing. A week later, the girl lodged a complaint at the police station, naming the accused in her FIR. The court further noted that the girl in question eloped with other boys twice earlier. There were no documents to prove that she was a minor. The court acquitted all the accused in the absence of credible evidence. According to the prosecution, the girl went missing on March 16, 2013. However, her mother lodged a report about her missing daughter on March 12, 2014. The girl surfaced a week later and lodged a complaint that she was sold by some persons and raped by the person who bought her. She also named the accused in the FIR. In her statement to the police, the girl said she was a student at Rani Laxmibai School and, since her mother was not keeping well, she also started working as domestic help with one of her friends. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo The accused, Anjum, Shanti Bai, her daughter Rajni, and son-in-law Kailash Yadav, took her and her friend to Bhopal, where they met Anjum's mother, Khairunnisa. From Bhopal, they went to Susner through Shujalpur. In Susner, she was sold to Vijay Singh. She was asked to wear a saree, and some cash was put in her lap. She was 17 years of age then. Vijay forcibly married her and sexually exploited her for nearly a year until she escaped and reached the police station. The Chhindwara police investigated the case and charge-sheeted it in a Pocso court. The court sentenced all the accused to 10 years in jail. The bench of Justice Atul Sreedharan and Justice Anuradha Shukla, hearing the criminal revision petition of the accused, observed that there was no force used to take the girl to Susner and hand her off to Vijay Singh. The girl appeared to have gone with them on her own. In her statement, she said that at Susner, she was asked to wear a saree, and some cash was put on her lap. An engagement ceremony was being performed without informing her. The girl was a student, and she must have seen ceremonies like this taking place before marriage. There was no document to substantiate that she was a minor at that time, except for the date of birth written in the school document based on the information given by her parents. The medico-legal test on the girl failed to give a conclusive opinion on rape, as she was with Vijay Singh for almost a year. The mother of the girl lodged a complaint about her missing daughter a year after she went missing. She didn't inquire from any of the accused about her daughter during this period either. It appeared that the girl went with the accused after informing her mother. The court believed that it was with the agreement of the girl that she was taken to Susner and married to Vijay Singh. The girl's friend, in her statement, said that she 'eloped' with other boys on two occasions earlier. Her mother was aware of it. There was no evidence regarding the age of the girl. In such a situation, the accused were acquitted for want of credible evidence, and the Pocso court order was set aside, the court said.

Anjum returns to National shooting team with renewed energy

Anjum Moudgil is pleased to be back in the National team to shoot in the World Cup in Munich. After keeping a low profile for some time and being a bit detached from a sport that had kept her occupied for about a decade, Anjum has reclaimed the hunger to excel. 'I feel fresh and like a newcomer in the team,' said the 31-year-old Anjum, who has competed in the last two Olympics in Tokyo and Paris. Quite accomplished ever since she won the World Championship silver medal in air rifle in Changwon, Korea (2018), Anjum realised that she had been far too obsessed with shooting in the Olympics in the last two cycles. 'I have been doing minimal training before the National Championships and the National Games. I was still shooting well and won medals. I did well in the trials and could have competed in the World Cups earlier, if not in the main team. I chose to step back and focus on a few things that have been pending for a long time,' revealed Anjum. She utilised the time and all her savings, along with her husband Ankush Bhardwaj, to set up a dream project, Archon Fitness, a gym with a shooting range and other sporting facilities in Mohali. 'It is the only gym with a shooting range in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, the Tricity,' said Anjum, happy to have set up a dream project that provides a holistic fitness and recreation facility for everyone. Experience is a great teacher, only for those who are willing to learn. Anjum is a fine student of sport and life. Being a practitioner of the Art of Living, Anjum immerses herself in meditation and has learnt to live in the present. There is no reverse gear to retrace the past, and no acceleration to visualise the future. 'It has been great to take the mind off shooting and focus on so many other things. It has been a very good learning experience, tackling so many aspects. I have stopped thinking too far ahead. The focus is to stay in the moment and do one's best. After the Tokyo Olympics, we tuned to Paris quickly, because the time was also short. Now, I focus only on the current competition. We will think about Los Angeles in 2028,' she said. Relaxed With plenty of achievements and medals, both in air rifle and rifle 3-position events, Anjum is quite relaxed about her shooting. Years of diligent training have tuned her technique nicely. With an uncluttered mind, she can shoot very well, even with limited preparation. Even though two World Cups have finished already, there is plenty of action left in the season, with the Asian Championship and the World Championships lined up, along with another World Cup, before the Shooting League of India (SLI). Anjum is confident of fine-tuning her shooting to match world standards and lend the best possible support to the Indian team that is already quite dominant in the international arena. Anjum had won the mixed air rifle gold in Munich in 2019, and is ready to paint fresh memories to her rich collection.

"KKR Had Chance To Retain Shreyas Iyer": India Great's Blunt Take On PBKS' Campaign

Punjab Kings faced a shocking eight-wicket defeat in the Qualifier 1 match of IPL 2025 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Mullanpur on Thursday. It was a pure dominating show from Rajat Patidar as they bundled PBKS for paltry 102 and then chased down the target in just 10 overs. With this win, RCB marched into the final of IPL 2025 while PBKS will now face Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2 match on Sunday in Ahmedabad. Despite the loss, the IPL 2025 season has been phenomenal for PBKS as they reached the playoffs after a hiatus of 10 years. The duo of captain of Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting took the daunting task and also passed with the flying colors by taking PBKS in the playoffs. However, it would be unfair to not applaud the other players for their contribution and former India skipper Anjum Chopra also lauded PBKS for their all-round performance. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Anjum stated that the reason of PBKS success is their all-round performance and also Shreyas' role as a leader. "We are focusing on Punjab Kings is because they reached the playoffs after 11 years. The kind of the game they have played is that they shone through the entire season. It's not like that they lost one-sided matches or they had a very poor in the league stage," Anjum told NDTV. "So, PBKS as a franchise have caught everyone's attention because of their all-round play. Even Shreyas or Ponting would say the same that it was not just one man's contribution, which led to team's success. Yes, Shreyas Iyer as a captain, as a batter, has played a massive role and is definitely worth a mention but if you ask him, he will never say, 'It is because of me'," he added. Ever-since PBKS made it to the playoffs, many fans took to social media and criticised Kolkata Knight Riders for not retaining and even giving proper credit to Shreyas for their title win in 2024. Anjum stated that despite not getting retained, it is a player's job to perform and it is exactly what Shreyas did in PBKS. "It is between the franchise and the player. If they didn't retain him and he went somewhere else, then it doesn't mean that Shreyas has no right to succeed in his career. It is absolutely unfair. KKR had a chance to retain but they didn't, so he went somewhere else," said Anjum. "But, Shreyas is still a player. Whether he plays for KKR or PBKS, his job is only to perform and score runs. Eventually, if his team is also doing well, then as a player and as captain it's his job. He is just playing for his team, doesn't matter which jersey he is wearing," he added.
