NBA Trade Idea Gives Magic a Promising Backup Center
The Orlando Magic found it difficult with their frontcourt depth in the 2025 NBA playoffs. The team's starting center, Wendell Carter Jr., did plenty on both ends. Carter didn't have his usual backup in Mo Wagner, as he was recovering from an ACL tear he suffered in December 2024. Because of the Magic's lack of depth, a trade idea from Zach Roberts of the Charlotte Hornets on SI links the team with the Charlotte Hornets. According to Roberts, trading Anthony Black and a couple of picks could give Orlando a decent center in Mark Williams. Advertisement Williams may not have any experience in the postseason, but he's proven he can produce at an elite level. Orlando Magic center Wendell Carter Jr. reacts after making a basket with a foul against the Boston Celtics during the second quarter of game two of the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs at TD Townson-Imagn Images "In this deal, the Hornets would send Williams and a 2031 second-round pick (Charlotte's own) for Anthony Black and a bevy of second-round picks," Roberts wrote. "Black is a decent, young player, but he's not on Williams' level. The Magic would send their 2026 and 2027 second-round picks as well as Washington's 2028 and New Orleans' 2030 second-rounders." Williams wrapped up his third year and averaged 15.3 points and 10.2 rebounds. His production for the Hornets is what caught the attention of the Los Angeles Lakers. The former Duke player was almost traded to the Lakers after they shipped Anthony Davis to Dallas for Luka Doncic. Advertisement However, there is a downside to trading for Williams. The trade with the Lakers wasn't finalized after he failed his physical. Additionally, the young big man has a history of health problems. In his young career, the big man has not completed a full season when he played at least 50 games. The most games Williams has appeared in a season was 44 during the 2024-25 campaign. Even with that, he's shown plenty of promise and can help the Magic with their frontcourt needs. Related: Magic Head Coach Offers Verdict on Potential Offseason Changes in Orlando

Trevelin Queen's big night leads Magic past Pacers 129-115 in battle of backups
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Trevelin Queen scored a career-high 25 points and Anthony Black added 21 points, six rebounds and seven assists to help the Orlando Magic pull away from the Indiana Pacers 129-115 in a battle of backups Friday night. Queen made five 3-pointers for the Magic, who won their fifth straight despite benching four starters after locking up a spot in the play-in tournament. Guard Cory Joseph, the other starter, only played 6 minutes, 16 seconds. All five of Indiana's starters also sat out one day after securing home-court advantage in its first playoff series since 2014. Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers with 20 points and eight rebounds. Johnny Furphy had 17 points and six rebounds as Indiana's six-game winning streak was snapped. The loss locked the Pacers into the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference and creates a first-round rematch against the Milwaukee Bucks. Indiana won that series last season. Orlando closed the first quarter tied at 29, but broke away with a 17-4 spurt to open the second and never let the Pacers get close again. Each team had eight players score in double figures. Takeaways Magic: Orlando followed a perfect script. Coach Jamahl Mosley gave his starters what they needed — rest — then got the best out of his bench. Pacers: Coach Rick Carlisle played with some unusual rotations and it showed. The Pacers were out of sync offensively and struggled to defensively on an ugly night that certainly wasn't indicative of how well Indiana had been playing. Key moment Orlando's fast second-quarter start swung the game, but it was a 14-0 run later in the quarter that led to a 68-39 lead and turned this one into a blowout. Key stat The Magic shot 63% from the field in the first half and nearly matched that total in the second half, finishing with a season best 57.6%. Up next Orlando visits Atlanta and Indiana travels to Cleveland on Sunday, the final day of the regular season. ___ AP NBA:

NBA All-Star Weekend participants tracker: 3-point shootout, dunk contest, more
NBA All-Star Weekend will feature a host of events on Feb. 14-16 in San Francisco, beginning with the Rising Stars game on Friday and culminating with the All-Star Game on Sunday night. Last year in addition to the 3-point contest there was also a mixed 3-point competition featuring Golden State's Steph Curry against New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, with Ionescu falling to Curry in a close match. The NBA has not yet confirmed whether there will be a rematch or some other version of the event in this year's festivities (though Caitlin Clark will not take part, if there is). Advertisement But what we do know is that players are beginning to commit to All-Star events, and we're keeping track of who will be involved. The NBA released its player pool for the Rising Stars event in late January. The 2025 Castrol Rising Stars ⬇️ — NBA Communications (@NBAPR) January 28, 2025 Three players originally selected had to withdraw due to injury (76ers rookie Jared McCain and sophomores Dereck Lively II of the Dallas Mavericks and Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets), while San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was moved to the main event after he was named an All-Star reserve. Their replacements: Orlando Magic rookie guard Anthony Black, Phoenix Suns sophomore forward Ryan Dunn, Portland Trail Blazers sophomore wing Toumani Camara and Detroit Pistons sophomore forward Ausar Thompson. This event will be a four-team mini-tournament featuring young NBA players and a collection of NBA G League standouts. NBA rookies and sophomores will be drafted onto three teams on Feb. 4, with the G Leaguers making up a fourth team. The G League team will include Reed Sheppard, who was the No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft by the Houston Rockets. Sheppard is averaging 30.7 points, 8.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The four teams, each with seven-player rosters, will compete on Friday, Feb. 14, the first night of All-Star festivities. Here are the players: Rookies: Bub Carrington (Wizards), Stephon Castle (Spurs), Tristan Da Silva (Magic), Zach Edey (Grizzlies), Dalton Knecht (Lakers), Ryan Dunn (Suns), Yves Missi (Pelicans), Zaccharie Risacher (Hawks), Alex Sarr (Wizards), Jaylen Wells (Grizzlies). Sophomores: Bilal Coulibaly (Wizards), Gradey Dick (Raptors), Keyonte George (Jazz), Scoot Henderson (Trail Blazers), Trayce Jackson-Davis (Warriors), Jaime Jaquez Jr. (Heat), Anthony Black (Magic), Toumani Camara (Trail Blazers), Amen Thompson (Rockets), Cason Wallace (Thunder), Ausar Thompson (Pistons). Advertisement NBA G League: JD Davison (Maine Celtics), Mac McClung (Osceola Magic), Bryce McGowens (Rip City Remix), Leonard Miller (Iowa Wolves), Dink Pate (Mexico City Capitanes), Reed Sheppard (Rio Grande Valley Vipers), Pat Spencer (Santa Cruz Warriors). Mac McClung will return and attempt to not only defend his crown, but to become the first person to win the even three times in a row. The 6-foot-2 McClung is a unique case, as he has only played in five NBA games in four years. Last year he was allowed to compete despite spending the entire season in the G League. He is currently on a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic. Here is the field: THE BACK-TO-BACK CHAMP WANTS MORE… Watch Mac McClung's 1st #ATTSlamDunk win in 2023!
