New Delhi: In a major development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh and the United States on Sunday to import 7,00,000 tonnes of high-quality wheat annually from the United States at competitive prices for the next five years. It is important to note that the deal was signed ahead of third-round tariff talks between Bangladesh and the US in the last week of July. The second round of talks were inconclusive after the US imposed conditions to increase certain security cooperation to sign a non-disclosure tariff deal. The US has already announced that it will continue joint military exercises with Bangladesh. The MoU to import wheat was signed by Md Abul Hasanat Humayun Kabir, Director General of the Food Department, on behalf of the Bangladesh government, and Joseph K. Sower, Vice President of the US Wheat Association, on behalf of the United States, in the presence of Bangladesh's Food Adviser, Ali Imam Majumdar. Speaking at the event, Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder said that this MoU will create opportunities to build trust and create broader areas of mutual trade cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States, and the people of both countries will benefit. 'This MoU was signed between Bangladesh and the United States to ensure the overall food security, nutritional quality, and food supply of the country', the Bangladesh interim government said in a statement. The US, on the same day, announced that it will continue joint military exercises with Bangladesh. 'The Armed Forces of Bangladesh and the United States military will continue their longstanding partnership this summer through three joint exercises and the delivery of a new capability that will reinforce our common security interests. These efforts help to make the United States and Bangladesh stronger, and the region safer,' the US Embassy in Dhaka said in a statement. 'For the fourth year in a row, the Bangladesh Army and U.S. Army Pacific will conduct Exercise Tiger Lightning. Through realistic training, our soldiers will develop readiness for counterterrorism, peacekeeping, jungle operations, medical evacuations and countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs)', it added. 'Tiger Shark (part of the Flash Bengal series) is a joint training exercise where our two countries' Special Forces practice combat tasks. The exercise, ongoing since 2009, will feature patrol boat handling and small arms marksmanship that will strengthen Bangladesh's Special Warfare Diving and Salvage and the Para Commando Brigade ability to respond to crises. One of the highlights of this combined exercise is the use of U.S. equipment by both countries', the statement said. 'Exercise Pacific Angel: This will be the fourth iteration of Pacific Angel with Bangladesh. It will highlight one of the hallmarks of our defense relationship, our C-130 fleets, which are critical in disaster response airdrops and air mobility operations. The exercise also focuses on Search and Rescue (SAR) and Aeromedical operations further developing Bangladesh's ability to respond to humanitarian disasters', the statement said. 'RQ-21 Program Launch: The United States is working with Bangladesh's Army and Navy to develop an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) capability for Bangladesh. A Bangladesh Regiment comprised of Army and Navy personnel will operate the new RQ-21 Blackjack system. This joint effort will enable Bangladesh to monitor its maritime domain, secure its borders, and conduct peacekeeping missions', the statement said.

Hindus in Bangladesh in distress, violence increased against...., 2442 cases reported in 330 days, Anti-India Yunus to... Tensions have escalated in Bangladesh with rising violence against minority communities following the arrest of former priest Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges last year. Bangladesh witnessed 2,442 incidents of communal violence over a span of 330 days from August 4 last year, when political unrest peaked, leading to the ouster of prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government, a minority advocacy group in the country said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI. In a statement released at a press conference at the National Press Club here, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council said, 'Most of these violent incidents happened between August 4 and August 20 last year.' Who is behind the rising violence against Hindus in Bangladesh? Furthermore, it stated that the minority communities faced 2,442 incidents of communal violence over a span of 330 days from August 4, 2024. The statement stated that the nature of violence ranged from murders and sexual assaults, including gang rapes, to attacks on places of worship, seizing homes and businesses, arrests on charges of alleged defamation of religion, and forced removals of minorities from organisations. The victims include men, women, and adolescents belonging to minority groups. Which is the largest minority community in Bangladesh? According to the 2022 census, Hindus are the largest minority community in Bangladesh at 7.95% of the total population, followed by Buddhists (0.61%), Christians (0.30%), and others (0.12%). Hindus: 7.95% Buddhists: 0.61% Christians: 0.30% Others: 0.12% What is the role of Anti-India Yunus? The statement added that the perpetrators have largely evaded justice, with the interim government 'refusing to acknowledge' the incidents and 'dismissing them as politically motivated. According to a news agency PTI report, a senior Council leader, Narmal Rosario, said the ongoing reform initiatives by the interim government have repeatedly excluded minority communities, 'which is the most frustrating factor for us'. 'We want to walk together with all,' he stated, PTI reported. Another leader, Nimchandra Bhoumik, said, 'The division (within the society) was not a pleasant matter for anyone.' 'The government, in fact, ignores the incidents of repression of minorities. We demand proper justice,' acting general secretary of the council, Manindra Kumar Nath, said, news agency PTI reported. Luxury jet, bike escorts, helicopter rides and…: Anti-India Asim Munir to head for lavish Sri Lanka tour while Pakistan begs for money
Luxury jet, bike escorts, helicopter rides and…: Anti-India Asim Munir to head for lavish Sri Lanka tour while Pakistan begs for money The itinerary of Pakistan Army chief Filed Marshal Asim Munir reveals shocking details about his upcoming 'diplomatic' visit to Sri Lanka. By Gazi Abbas Shahid Advertisement Asim Munir (File) Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is heading to neighboring Sri Lanka for a state visit from July 20–23, but his itinerary suggests that the trip is more of a luxury retreat for Pakistan's de-facto ruler than a diplomatic mission to the Island nation. Munir's lavish trip comes at a time when the Pakistan economy lies in complete ruin and Islamabad is literally begging global financial bodies for loans to keep the country running. What does Asim Munir's Sri Lanka itinerary reveal? Media reports citing Asim Munir's itinerary reveal shocking details about the Pakistan Army chief's visit to Sri Lanka. The Pakistani Field Marshal will fly to the Island nation in special luxury jet and is expected to stay at one of the most lavish five-star hotels in Colombo, a privilege which has been barred to Pakistani civilian politicians, including federal ministers, under the country's strict austerity measures. Advertisement === While in Sri Lanka, Asim Munir will be greeted by ceremonial motorcycle escorts, go on multiple helicopter rides over the famed famed Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Adam's Peak, and embark on opulent sightseeing tours of Colombo. Notably, Pakistan's civilian government has barred cabinet ministers from foreign travel, banned prohibited luxury hotel stays, and frozen all non-essential spending. However, these austerity measures don't seemingly apply to Field Marshal Asim Munir, the country's shadow ruler. Advertisement === Pakistan economy in shambles Its no secret that the Pakistan economy is in complete ruin, as common Pakistanis battle record inflation, rising poverty, and widespread unemployment. Islamabad's external debt has ballooned to over $133 billion, and nearly half of the country's federal budget is spent on paying back loans taken from various financial institutions and nations. Thus, while the common folk are struggling to meet ends, and some even finding it difficult to arrange two square meals a day for their families, Pakistan's army strongman Asim Munir is shamelessly embarking on lavish tours of foreign nations on the back of hard-earned taxpayer money. How Pakistanis responded to Munir's lavish escapades? Though freedom of speech is a pipe dream in Pakistan and a single comment against the authorities, especially the Army, could land a citizen in prison or even worse, Asim Munir's lavish trips have been widely criticised by Pakistani social media users, with some calling it 'joyride on broken backs' and 'a mockery of national pain.' This isn't the first time that Asim Munir has drawn the ire of Pakistani commoners for his hypocritical flaunting of elite privilege. Earlier, Pakistani social media erupted in fury after Munir was allegedly seen shopping at a luxury mall in the US before his lunch meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. Critics of the Pakistani government, particularly the shadow Army regime have condemned the deepening rot witnessed in the country's governance, especially after the ouster of former premier Imran Khan, who is currently in prison on trumped up charges. Pakistani dissidents have termed Munir's foreign trips as decadence under the garb of diplomacy, noting that while the state preaches and imposes austerity measures on ordinary citizens, its army overlords are emptying the country's coffers with impunity.
