UEFA respond to controversial VAR changes with penalty tweak a "no go"

UEFA have made it known that they do not want to give VAR more influence over games and strongly oppose the proposal to rid of rebounds once a goalkeeper has saved a penalty UEFA have made it clear they will look to stop increasing VAR powers with potential rule changes allowing them to intervene on corners and second yellow cards. ‌ The International FA Board (IFAB) are responsible for making and tweaking football's laws and are considering giving those on VAR greater scope to intervene in matches - but UEFA doesn't want their influence to grow any further than it already is. ‌ IFAB's most controversial and radical change though would be to penalties and bring an end to the concept of a player scoring from a rebound. UEFA strongly oppose the idea of the new law, which means if a goalkeeper saves the kick, the ball is declared 'dead' and a goal cannot be scored from a follow-up. ‌ A senior UEFA source told The Times that the current penalty proposal was a 'no go' and giving VAR more room to involve themselves in games would be "hard to tolerate". UEFA claim the increase in delays, which would come as a result of VAR getting more scope to communicate with officials, would counter any benefit from the extra interventions and the possibility of more correct decisions, although these are still subjective. ‌ European football's governing body insists there needs be talks between football's leaders, IFAB and FIFA before any new proposals are submitted. UEFA were unhappy that approved changes to the laws of the game in March were done without consulting them. A recent tweak now means the goalkeeper concedes a corner instead of an indirect free kick for holding on to the ball longer than eight seconds. Any law changes approved next March would mean they are implemented for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. VAR has continued to make errors on the club and international stage. At the last World Cup in Qatar Portugal were awarded a penalty which may believed to be the wrong call. In the same tournament Antoine Griezmann wrongly had a goal ruled out for France. Those in favour of giving VAR more scope believe they should be able to intervene for factual errors, which includes overturning a wrong corner decisions. Allowing them to intervene for second yellow cards is seen as much more controversial given their subjective nature. Atletico Madrid reaches deal to sign Argentina international Thiago Almada

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid has reached an agreement to sign Argentina international Thiago Almada from Brazilian club Botafogo. Atletico said Tuesday the 24-year-old attacking midfielder, who was playing on loan with French club Lyon, will sign his contract with the Spanish club after passing a medical. Advertisement Atletico did not disclose the transfer fee or give details on the length of the contract. Spanish media said the transfer was worth about 25 million euros ($29 million), with Botafogo receiving a percentage of a possible future transfer to another club. Almada arrives after forward Ángel Correa left Atletico to sign with Mexican club Tigres. He'll join an attack that includes countryman Julián Álvarez, Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sorloth. Atletico had already boosted its squad by signing midfielder Álex Baena from Villarreal and 22-year-old Italian left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta. Atletico's Club World Cup exit is latest setback to Simeone's reign

Atletico's head coach Diego Simeone expressed pride in his players' efforts throughout their Club World Cup campaign. (EPA Images pic) PASADENA : Atletico Madrid will have to pick themselves up again as they pack their bags to travel back home earlier than most expected from the Club World Cup after being knocked out of the tournament in the group stage. Diego Simeone's side were eliminated despite a 1-0 victory over Brazil's Botafogo in their final Group B match on Monday, as they finished third in the so-called 'group of death', level on six points with Paris St-Germain and Botafogo but falling short on goal difference. The damage was largely inflicted in that opening 4-0 thrashing by PSG, a scoreline that would ultimately prove fatal to their ambitions in Fifa's revamped multi-million dollar showcase. Simeone's men arrived in the US with high hopes, boasting a squad that included Argentinian forward Julian Alvarez, former France captain Antoine Griezmann, and several other international names. However, their heavy loss to PSG and lacklustre performances overall raised further questions about the team's direction under their long-serving manager. Reflecting on the campaign, Simeone expressed pride in his players' efforts but lamented what he deemed poor officiating. 'Proud of the boys' work. We gave absolutely everything we had. We won two out of three matches, and even so, sadly, we're out,' he told DAZN after the Botafogo win. 'With six points, it wasn't bad, but the match against PSG condemned us, where every refereeing decision always went against us. Today's game also had a penalty decision overturned after a VAR review. It's more of the same. We know what we need to improve, and this will help us move forward.' Griezmann was the standout performer against Botafogo, scoring the decisive goal and providing a rare spark for a side that has struggled to replicate the defensive prowess seen in Simeone's best years, when they reached two Champions League finals. Despite dominating possession, Atletico rarely troubled Botafogo's organised defence and needed their goalkeeper Jan Oblak to work their magic against their Brazilian rivals to avoid a worse result. The previous defeat by PSG had already exposed familiar weaknesses, including frail defending against wide players and a lack of creativity in the final third – issues that have plagued them during their four consecutive trophy-less seasons. Blaming the refereeing rather than facing their own issues seems like a tough pill to swallow for Atletico fans, as this latest disappointment heaps further pressure on Simeone, Europe's highest-paid manager, as he prepares for his 14th season in charge of the Madrid side. Critics and fans alike are questioning whether the Argentine's leadership can still inspire a squad that has stagnated in both domestic and European competitions. Adding to Atletico's woes is the sight of bitter rivals Real Madrid are poised to advance in Fifa's revamped tournament. With an off-season of introspection ahead, Atletico face mounting challenges to rebuild and reclaim their status as contenders on all fronts.
