Curated By : Last Updated: July 18, 2025, 19:02 IST Janaki V v/s State of Kerala received mixed reviews from viewers (Photo Source: Instagram) After a legal battle and a series of delays, actor-politician Suresh Gopi's latest film Janaki V v/s State of Kerala finally hit the big screens on July 17. The Malayalam courtroom drama was denied certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) due to the movie's title. After discussions, the makers opted for a modification by adding the word 'V" to its title, following which it received a UA certificate with a 16+ age recommendation. Janaki V v/s State of Kerala, also starring Anupama Parameswaran, tells the tale of a woman's legal struggle for justice after an assault. The first X reviews of the Pravin Narayanan directorial are now out. Janaki V v/s has received mixed responses. Let's take a look at some of them: Heaping praise on Suresh Gopi's performance, one user wrote, 'A tightly made courtroom drama that keeps you engaged throughout. Suresh Gopi delivers a commanding, nuanced performance that truly stands out. Anupama Parameswaran's performance (thumbs up). The film maintains a steady pace and finishes on a high. A compelling and satisfying watch." A tightly made courtroom drama that keeps you engaged throughout, Suresh Gopi delivers a commanding, nuanced performance that truly stands out. 'Janaki V vs State of Kerala – A well-made courtroom drama with a proper execution. Suresh Gopi is back as a performer in this film. Anupama Parameswaran also nailed her role throughout. Emotions are Written Well without missing their intensity." One person found the plot 'excellent," but thought that the diaoluges were too 'preachy". 'An excellent, relevant plot but poor writing, poor casting except the leads, lack of good craftsmanship and some unwanted propaganda when considering the story. It was just an ok watch for me. And I couldn't stand the preaching dialogues in the courtroom," read his review. ‘Janaki V vs State of Kerala' box office collections day 1: Suresh Gopi's film gets decent start; mints Rs 1 crore
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) After weeks of buzz and controversy surrounding its title, 'Janaki V vs State of Kerala' finally opened in theatres on Thursday, July 17, 2025. And it seems the courtroom drama, starring Suresh Gopi in a powerful lead role, has managed to make a decent impression, both critically and commercially. According to early estimates from Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 1 crore on Day 1 (India net, all languages). This marks a solid start for a regional legal thriller. Steady occupancy, especially in evening and night shows The film witnessed an overall 15.94% occupancy in Malayalam screens on its first day, with numbers improving gradually through the day. Morning shows began slow at just 8.05%, but interest picked up by evening (17.73%) and reached a peak at night with 23.27% occupancy. Cities like Kochi led the way with 36% occupancy in night shows alone, followed by Bengaluru (20.75% overall) and Chennai (15.25%). Legal drama with star power Suresh Gopi steps into the shoes of Advocate David Abel Donovan, and early reviews suggest that his performance is a key highlight of the film. Anupama Parameswaran plays Janaki Vidhyadharan, whose story anchors the plot, while Madhav Suresh, Shruthi Ramachandran, and Divya Pillai round out the supporting cast with credible performances. The movie is also getting decent reviews from the audiences. ETimes gave the movie a rating of 2.5 stars and an excerpt from our review reads, "Anupama Parameswaran delivers a subtle, layered performance as Janaki, effectively conveying her mental anguish and listlessness. Shruthi Ramachandran, as Niveditha, gives a calm, understated portrayal of Janaki's lawyer. Askar Ali and Divya Pillai perform well in their supporting roles, though Madhav's dialogue delivery feels slightly off in certain scenes. The film does suffer from its length and a muddled screenplay. A tighter, crisper edit would have served it better. While Suresh Gopi's monologues are familiar to Malayali audiences, they could have been trimmed without taking anything away from the film. Towards the climax, the lengthy dialogues become long-winded and, frankly, grating so close to the resolution. Some awkward English dialogues also stand out."

‘Janaki V Vs State of Kerala' movie review: Suresh Gopi-Anupama Parameswaran film is insensitive and pointless
Nothing enlivens courtroom dramas than fiery arguments, which open new pathways into our understanding of a case. In Janaki V Vs State of Kerala, celebrated advocate David Abel Donovan (Suresh Gopi)'s arguments are full of fire. Still, a significant portion of them are so irrelevant that they would fit more in a loud television debate than in a courtroom. He is the kind of person who would talk about cheese when he is supposed to argue about chalk. So, it is no wonder that he would go on a long diatribe against the State's developmental projects when he is arguing in court in a case related to sexual assault, or that he would ask a rape victim whether she watches porn and how often. The opening credit sequences of the film hint at this behaviour with news clippings of his various press statements on a host of issues, all of which reveal a lawyer who is more active outside the court than inside. Janaki V Vs State of Kerala, which arrives in theatres with an extra 'V' thanks to the diktats of the censors, is caught between the need to tell a sensitive story and projecting the superhero aura of the actor playing the advocate. Debutant director Praveen Narayanan, who has also written the film, struggles on both counts. Janaki V Vs State of Kerala (Malayalam) Director: Pravin Narayanan Cast: Suresh Gopi, Anupama Parameswaran, Madhav Suresh, Askar Ali, Shruti Ramachandran, Divya Pillai Runtime: 156 minutes Storyline: An IT professional gets raped in her hometown, but the chain of events come under intense scrutiny in the courtroom Janaki (Anupama Parameswaran), an IT professional in Bengaluru, becomes the victim of rape in her hometown when she is on vacation. In the courtroom exchanges that follow, the chain of events falls under intense scrutiny. Right from the early sequences, the filmmaker makes it clear that subtlety is not something he would strive. Everything comes with loud visual and audio cues, leaving no doubts in the minds of the audience. The writing, as well as the filmmaking, harks back to the 1990s. The thinly veiled references to contemporary issues become a convenient writing option. However, when the film proclaims its pet original ideas, one wishes that it had stayed with the borrowed ones. One of these ideas, which forms the core of the film, regarding the paternity of a child born out of rape, is probably one of the most outlandish ideas heard in cinema in recent years. It, in a way, trivialises a serious issue, by turning it into an outright political weapon. ALSO READ:JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala row:Isn't demand for change of name of film a challenge to freedom of creative expression, asks Kerala HC Many of the arguments irrelevant to the case uttered by the advocate are also political, fitting in with the real-life persona of the actor. For a courtroom drama, there is hardly any scene that makes an impact. As if to excite the audience lulled by the sluggish drama, there is an unnecessary jump scare sequence, which seems inspired from a B-grade horror movie. Songs further drag down the narrative. With its insensitive take on an important issue, Janaki V Vs State of Kerala becomes a film as pointless as the letter 'V', which was added to Janaki's name to satisfy the whims of the censors. The controversy behind the title The release of the Malayalam movie Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister and superstar Suresh Gopi, was stalled following a demand from the Censor Board for a film title change. According to the film's makers, the censor board asked them to change the name Janaki, saying it also refers to the Hindu goddess Sita. The movie tells the story of a woman who faced assault and took legal fight against the state. The board reportedly said that God's name should not be given to a woman who was assaulted. The film's release was scheduled for 20 June. The regional office of CBFC in Thiruvananthapuram had cleared the film with a U/A certificate. The film was later forwarded to the CBFC headquarters in Mumbai, where officials demanded a change in the title.
