Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid greeted by robot guest at Dubai gathering
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, was given a glimpse into the emirate's high-tech future when he was introduced to a robot guest at a gathering in Union House. The robot waved to dignitaries, ministers, investors and business leaders in video taken by Dubai Media Office on Wednesday. The machine then strode over to greet Sheikh Mohammed and guests including Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed, at the Mudaif Majlis. The demonstration highlights the UAE's commitment to harnessing rapidly evolving technology, from drone delivery services to robot-assisted surgery in hospitals. In January, a robot concierge was put to work at a hotel on Saadiyat Island to test how technology could take on day-to-day tasks. The Type 1 Autodroid developed by Autogo, a division of UAE tech company Kintsugi, successfully completed the month-long trial at the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. It provided an early indicator of how humanoid machines could support people at work, or take over some menial tasks. Surgeons at Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City first conducted surgery with the help of robotics in 2020. It was used to perform a pyeloplasty on a young Emirati. The procedure was to remove a 'ureteropelvic junction obstruction' – a blockage of the tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder. 'The instruments used in robotic surgery provide surgeons with magnified, 3D high-definition vision, more comfortable use of instruments and easier access to areas that would've been difficult to reach using conventional methods,' Dr Sarfraz Ahmad, who led the team at SSMC, said at the time.

Technology & AI: A focus on developing technology and AI has been a key plank of the region's concerted push to diversify beyond oil and gas. Alongside heavy AI investment, there have been significant efforts to develop Arab-language models trained on local datasets. Climate & Sustainability: The Gulf is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, with rising temperatures, water scarcity, and environmental degradation posing significant challenges. The spotlight is on the region, and its diversification away from oil, with the UAE hosting COP28 Business Leadership: Social, political, and economic upheaval have been a constant theme around the world, and with it has come an increased need for leaders to steer a steady course and rebuild trust. Middle East can 'rise from the rubble of crises', says Gargash
The diplomatic advisor to the UAE President, Anwar Gargash, said the Middle East has an opportunity to "turn a new page" and become a prosperous region. "Today, we have a real opportunity to rise from the rubble of crises, wars and ideological illusions toward a brighter future through dialogue, coexistence and cooperation," Gargash said on social media platform X. "Just as East Asian countries have successfully risen to the challenge of development, we too can turn a new page. It's time to give this region the hope and advanced position it deserves in the world," he added. The statement comes after the region was spun into chaos when Israel attacked Iran last month, bringing the two rivals face-to-face after decades of discord. Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire after 12 days of attacks.

Gargash: Middle East can "rise from the rubble of crises"
The diplomatic advisor to the UAE President, Anwar Gargash, said the Middle East has an opportunity to "turn a new page" and become a prosperous region. "Today, we have a real opportunity to rise from the rubble of crises, wars, and ideological illusions toward a brighter future through dialogue, coexistence, and cooperation" Gargash said on social media platform X. He added: "Just as East Asian countries have successfully risen to the challenge of development, we too can turn a new page. It's time to give this region the hope and advanced position it deserves in the world." The statement comes after the region was spun into chaos when Israel attacked Iran last month, bringing the two rivals face-to-face after decades of discord. Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire after 12 days of tit-for-tat attacks, the limited military involvement of the US, and Iran's strikes on a US base in Qatar in response. The regional flareup was followed by reports of talks to expand the Abrahamic Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and countries in the region, led by Donald Trump during his first term, that included the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. The latest expansion is expected to include Syria, with direct talks being held between its new administration and Israel, only months after the ouster of Iran loyalist Bashar al-Assad.
