Newcastle United sign former Manchester United defender Mannion
Newcastle United have completed the impressive signing of former Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion on a free transfer. WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Magpies this evening. The 29-year-old centre-back joins Newcastle United after leaving former club Manchester United earlier this summer. Mannion spent four years with The Red Devils in which she made more than 50 appearances for the club in all competitions. The defender was an Adobe Women's FA Cup winner with Manchester United in 2023/2024. Mannion has also turned out for Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Manchester City in her career to date. On the international stage, Mannion represented England at various youth levels before switching her allegiances to the Republic of Ireland. She has been capped by The Girls In Green on 16 occasions while she has scored one goal. After joining Newcastle United, Mannion said 'It feels so good to be part of the Club. I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in and trying to hit the ground running. 'It is clear to everybody the direction that this club is going in, it's really exciting to be a part of.' Mannion is Newcastle United's fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United Women have completed the signing of former Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion. Mannion, 29, left Manchester United at the end of her contract on June 30 following four years with last season's FA Cup finalists. She follows Jordan Nobbs in dropping down from the Women's Super League to join second tier Newcastle this summer, after the WSL record appearance holder's move to the club was confirmed on Tuesday. 'It feels so good to be part of the club,' Mannion said in an official Newcastle statement. 'It is clear to everybody the direction this club is going in, it's really exciting to be a part of.' The Republic of Ireland international made 55 appearances for United in all competitions after her transfer from Manchester City in 2021. She came on as a substitute in the 2024 FA Cup final to win her and the club's first major trophy, beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-0. Mannion was sidelined for 11 months while at Manchester United after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in February 2022 — the second of her career. She represented England at youth level and received call ups to the senior side without making her full debut, before switching her international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland and making her debut in 2023. She has appeared 16 times for the national side. Newcastle finished fifth in the WSL 2, formerly the Championship, last season, their first campaign in the second tier. WSL 2 side Newcastle United are set to sign Aoife Mannion, Jordan Nobbs and Ffion Morgan on permanent deals this summer. Republic of Ireland defender Mannion, 29, left Manchester United in June following the expiration of her contract and will bring a wealth of experience to Newcastle. Advertisement Creative midfielder Jordan Nobbs, 32, joined Villa in January 2023 after 13 years with Arsenal. She has 71 caps for England and will be a valuable player for the WSL 2 side. Meanwhile, Wales international Ffion Morgan, 25, is part of the squad competing at Euro 2025 having spent the last four years at Bristol City. Newcastle are showing ambition in the transfer window as they push to gain promotion to the Women's Super League. They are also adding more staff members, including a new head of performance, with further investment in the women's side of the club. Last season, Newcastle finished fifth in the WSL 2 following their promotion from the third tier.
