Apple Watch 11 — here's the 5 biggest rumored upgrades

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. We only have a month left to go until Apple's expected to launch the Apple Watch Series 11 at its September event. Thanks to plenty of Apple Watch Series 11 leaks, we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the next premium Apple timepiece. While the watch's design itself isn't expected to change much, the recently announced watchOS 26 promises to overhaul its look and feel as well as introduce several new features. Don't expect any new sensors, as Apple says its long-awaited non-invasive blood glucose monitoring is still "many years away." Though we can be sure it'll show off some handy new features powered by Apple Intelligence. We'll have to see whether that'll be enough for Apple's lineup to make the cut for our best smartwatches ranking. With the clock winding down before its big reveal, we're rounding up all the biggest Apple Watch Series 11 upgrades that have been rumored so far. Updated S11 and modem chips Just because the Apple Watch Series 11 isn't getting a design overhaul doesn't mean there aren't a few hardware upgrades in store. Apple upgrades its processor with every smartwatch release, so we expect to see an updated S11 chip, which could improve performance and battery life. Apple's latest smartwatches could get a serious new connectivity improvement too. The Apple Watch Series 11 lineup is rumored to pack new modems from MediaTek with 5G RedCap support, which could finally let Apple's wearables ditch LTE connectivity for 5G. Satellite connectivity could be coming for the rugged Watch Ultra 3 as well, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. New WatchOS 26 features As we said, easily the biggest upgrade coming to the Apple Watch Series 11 is the new watchOS 26. The latest software adds plenty of new features to play with, like Wrist Flick gesture controls, which make dismissing notifications and alerts as easy as, well, a flick of the wrist. It seems so simple and intuitive, I'm surprised it took Apple over 10 years to implement it. Then there's the Workout Buddy, which is sure to prove popular. Apple's new personalized exercise coach helps you make the most of your workouts by providing tips, analysis, and motivation. It even sounds like a personal trainer is right there with you, cheering you on, because it uses an AI model trained on voice data from real Apple Fitness Plus trainers. WatchOS 26 also brings a long-requested feature to Apple smartwatches: Notes app support. All of your existing notes automatically sync to the app for easy viewing, but unfortunately, "viewing" is all you can do. You still won't be able to edit notes with your Apple Watch, though you can start a new one using the screen's tiny keyboard or audio dictation. Those curious can download the watchOS 26 beta right now for a test run. While you're at it, be sure to check out our full round-up of watchOS 26 features we can't wait to try. Sleep score At long last, Apple seems to be developing a sleep score feature for Apple Watch. Code found in iOS 26 suggests the Watch Series 11 could algorithmically monitor and rank the user's time spent and quality of sleep. It's a feature already found on many of the best smartwatches, but it'll be interesting to see Apple's spin on it. Especially given that many of Apple's existing health features, such as sleep apnea detection, are either backed by clinical research or cleared by the FDA. It's possible Apple's sleep score will take multiple health metrics into account, similar to what we saw with the Vitals option introduced with watchOS 11. Blood pressure tracking The Watch Ultra 3 is said to be Apple's first wearable to support blood pressure monitoring. While it's not the first smartwatch on the market to do so (Samsung's Galaxy Watch 3 can also track your blood pressure), Apple's implementing this new feature in a pretty ingenious way. Rather than providing an exact figure on diastolic or systolic measurements like you get with an on-the-arm cuff, this will work more like the sleep apnea detector to let the wearer know when their blood pressure starts creeping up. Once the user is notified about hypertension, the watch can give that information to a medical professional for additional testing. Just like other Apple Watch features that provide an early warning system for potential health concerns. Liquid glass interface Finally, the Watch Series 11 is set to bring iOS 26's biggest (and most divisive) selling point to Apple's line of wearables: liquid glass. Like the name would suggest, the liquid glass interface gives apps a translucent finish devoid of color, letting on-screen elements behind it bleed through as if seen through glass. You can already test out how liquid glass looks with the watchOS 26 beta. Follow Tom's Guide on Google News to get our up-to-date news, how-tos, and reviews in your feeds. New Apple Watch Ultra 3 Rumors Point to an Overdue Upgrade

With September inching closer and Apple's next event likely just weeks away, rumors are heating up about the company's fall lineup, which this year could include the Apple Watch Ultra 3 alongside a flagship Apple Watch Series 11 and iPhone 17. In a turnaround from the busy rumor mill, the clearest signal yet for an Ultra 3 release comes from the secretive company itself. Imagery found in the public beta of iOS 26 (first uncovered by MacRumors) reveals new screen specs that don't match any of the current Apple Watch models on the market. While Apple has yet to confirm anything (as usual), the Ultra 3's absence at last year's launch and its two-year upgrade cadence make 2025 a prime candidate for its debut. Here's what else we've heard and what we can expect based on the latest reports, leaks and Apple's usual upgrade patterns. Apple Watch Ultra 3 design and display If the leaked iOS 26 imagery holds true, the Ultra 3 will feature a slightly larger screen with a 422x514-pixel resolution (up from the Ultra 2's 410x502 pixels). Ideally, this would come with slimmer bezels to accommodate the larger, sharper display -- keeping with Apple's tradition of maximizing screen real estate without adding bulk to the already giant Ultra. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 debuted in September, 2023. Apple/Screenshot by James Martin/CNET Apple Watch Ultra 3 performance The Ultra is due for a performance bump to at least keep up with the S10 chip on the current Series 10 (the Ultra 2 runs on the S9 chip). The more likely scenario is that both the Ultra 3 and Series 11 get a new S11 chip that would typically bring faster performance and greater efficiency. The bump up in processing power could support new features such as enhanced GPS tracking, satellite connectivity, more advanced health monitoring and potentially some additional Apple Intelligence integrations like Workout Buddy which Apple announced in WatchOS 26 (and which I've started to think might be a bigger deal that it first appeared). Apple Watch Ultra 3 satellite connectivity One of the more intriguing Ultra 3 rumors comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has reported that Apple is exploring satellite connectivity for the next Apple Watch Ultra model. This would enable emergency messaging and location sharing even in areas without cellular coverage. If implemented, it could build on the Apple Watch's existing lineup of potentially life-saving features like emergency SOS, fall detection and car crash detection to outdoor enthusiasts going off the grid or even people who live in remote areas. Gurman's report also suggests the Ultra may gain 5G connectivity, a step up from its current LTE-only support. The Apple Watch has a new AI powered "Workout Buddy" that uses your personal metrics to give you live insights as you go. Apple Screenshot Apple Watch Ultra 3 health and fitness Several rumored health upgrades for the Series 11 could also make their way to the Ultra 3, the most anticipated being blood pressure tracking. According to Gurman, Apple is already testing the feature, though accuracy challenges could delay a public release this year. Blood glucose monitoring is another long-rumored addition, but it's expected to be even further out than blood pressure tracking, making it highly unlikely for 2025. In another Bloomberg report, Gurman says Apple is developing a broader AI health initiative, code-named "Project Mulberry," aimed at bringing personalized health and fitness insights to the Apple Watch. This would build on Apple's recently announced AI powered Workout Buddy which delivers personalized motivation for certain workouts with Watch OS 26. The Ultra's durability and long battery life could make it an ideal platform for round-the-clock training guidance, though based on current rumors, the rollout may be better aligned with a 2026 release. The Ultra line is due for a charging boost to match the faster speeds of the Series 10. Celso Bulgatti/CNET Apple Watch Ultra 3 battery life The Ultra already boasts the longest battery life of any Apple device (save for the Airtag of course), with up to two full days or 72 hours in low-power mode. While there are no concrete leaks about changes in battery capacity, pairing an S11 chip with a more efficient display could result in significant gains -- potentially approaching three days or up to four days in low-power mode. The faster charging Apple introduced with the Series 10 could also make its way to the Ultra line, reducing the amount of time the watch spends off your wrist. Apple Watch Ultra 3 price and release date Barring unexpected price hikes from tariffs or component costs, the Ultra 3 is expected to keep the same $799 starting price as the Ultra 2. Apple typically unveils its new watches at the same event as the iPhone, which this year is expected in early September (date not yet announced). If the pattern holds, preorders should begin a few days after the keynote and arrive in stores (or at your doorstep) one to two weeks after that.

Apple iPhone 17 event — rumored date and all the new products expected to launch

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Apple's next iPhone event is right around the corner. While the company has yet to confirm the date and time for its major fall product launch, rumors say the date is Tuesday, September 9. As with most big Apple launches, we expect the event to take place at the company's Cupertino campus, where the iPhone 17 series will be revealed. This year could shake up the iPhone lineup with the Plus model replaced by the super-thin iPhone 17 Air. The phones won't be alone, though. In addition to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, we expect to see the debut of the Apple Watch Series 11 and possibly the Apple Watch Ultra 3. There are a couple of long-shot products that are supposed to debut this Fall that could show up in September, including an updated Apple TV 4K and the long-awaited smart home hub HomePod 3. When is the September 2025 Apple event? The event has not yet been officially confirmed. Rumors say it will take place on September 9, 2025. Apple typically sends invitations about two weeks before the official date. With that in mind, we expect to see official invites around August 25. Last year's event started at 10 a.m. PT/ 1 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. BST, and we imagine this year's event will take place at a similar time. Apple shares event livestreams on its YouTube channel, and on Apple TV. Apple Vision Pro users should also be able to watch on their headset. iPhone 17 As always in the September event is headlined by the iPhone. We're expecting the iPhone 17 series, which should include four total devices: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Normally, we'd share pricing rumors here, but those have been hard to pin down, especially with President Trump's instituted tariffs and threatened ones against companies like Apple. The company recently announced a $100 billion investment in US manufacturing, likely to prevent some tariffs from hitting its coffers even more. Last year, Apple didn't raise the prices on the iPhone 16 models, which started at $799. However, the iPhone 16e, released in the spring, did see a $179 bump from its iPhone SE predecessor. Unfortunately, some analysts suggest that a major price hike is coming this year. Beyond that, the vanilla iPhone 17 may feature a larger 6.3-inch 120Hz ProMotion display, which would put it on par with the Pro models. Every new iPhone should feature the A19 chipset, which could be built with a 3nm process, meaning greater transistor density for better performance and efficiency. There are rumors that the standard model will feature an A18 chipset. iPhone 17 Air The big departure this year will be the Plus model, which could be replaced by the much-rumored ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. The Air would be a premium handset that could be as thin as 5.65mm (slightly thinner than the also super-slim 5.8mm Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge). It could feature a 6.6-inch screen, a tad smaller than the 6.7-inch display on the iPhone 16 Plus. The skinny device could also be limited to a 2,800mAh battery, but new silicon-carbon technology could make it denser. As a more premium model, the price might exceed the $899 starting price of the Plus and sit closer to the $1,199 of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max Speaking of the Pro Max, the big design change we expect to see is a new rectangular camera array that spans the backside of the phone and is more reminiscent of the Google Pixel 9 Pro design. That new array should feature an upgraded 48MP telephone lens with a 3.5x optical zoom, replacing the current 12MP, 5x lens. Additionally, there may be an upgraded 24MP front-facing camera. Apple is rumored to be working on a vapor cooling chamber that would replace the standard heatsinks currently available. That new cooling feature is rumored to only come to the Pro models. With updates to Qi2 wireless charging, it's likely the iPhone 17 lineup could see charging speeds up to 35W. The big update for all four handsets will be the fully released iOS 26 software, which we've been previewing in the ongoing beta program. Apple Intelligence isn't the main focus this year, but there is a suite of AI tools coming with iOS 26. And then there's the somewhat controversial Liquid Glass aesthetics. Apple Watch Series 11 and Watch Ultra 3 The other product we're fairly certain will debut is the Apple Watch Series 11. There should be a number of chip updates for the Watch 11. MacRumors reports that an updated S11 chip with a compact design should arrive alongside a new MediaTek modem chip, which would bring 5G connectivity to the Apple Watch, a boost over current LTE options. The big upgrade would be a version of blood pressure monitoring. This monitor would only measure blood pressure and provide an alert if hypertension is detected. There are rumors that Blood Oxygen monitoring is coming, though Apple is still fighting its lawsuit with Masimo, so that may not happen. watchOS 26 is set to release in September with new features that include wrist flick gestures, smarter notifications, the Notes App, and an AI-powered 'Workout Buddy' that acts as a coach for your exercise. The watch could cost $399, the same as the current Apple Watch Series 10, but again, tariffs could affect it. Multiple reports have suggested that the Apple Watch Ultra 3 will finally launch this year as a long-awaited follow-up to the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Beyond new wellness features and a new chip, we don't know what other upgrades or design changes it will offer. Some rumors have hinted at a wide-angle OLED display that is slightly larger. It also might get satellite connectivity, which would enable emergency text messages. A similar feature debuted in iOS 18 for iPhones. Lastly, we expect the entry-level Apple Watch SE 3 to arrive this year, so that could make an appearance. AirPods Pro 3 Accessories usually arrive during Apple's fall event, and we expect this year to be no different. Last year saw the release of the Apple AirPods 4. The AirPods Pro 3 didn't arrive, but are rumored to come out this year. The headphones are due for a refresh with the AirPods Pro 2 being introduced in 2022, only seeing a USB-C update in 2023. They should cost a similar $250 as the most expensive in-ear headphones that Apple produces. Rumors suggest that Apple may put a touchscreen on the charging case and a heart monitor in the buds themselves, and there may be additional sensors for more health tracking. Lastly, the controls on the in-ears could change to more conventional swipes and taps rather than capacitive squeezes. Longshots: Apple TV 4K & HomePod 3 Both an updated Apple TV 4K streaming device and an overhauled HomePod 3 speaker or smart home hub could be revealed during the event. Both reportedly could launch sometime in the latter half of 2025, though it's just as likely that they won't arrive until October or November. The HomePod 3 is supposed to kickstart a big push into smart home integration, which would integrate with the new Apple TV box. Some wilder ideas include Apple introducing a built-in camera to the box, which was teased by tvOS 17, and adding a FaceTime app. The HomePod 3 was reportedly delayed as Apple struggled to get Apple Intelligence and an improved Siri together because it would utilize Siri and AI to control other smart devices. It also may feature an iPad-like display, making it more reminiscent of the Amazon Echo Show 15. Apple could hold a second event in the fall for both devices and its new Mac releases. Apple Watch Series 11 — 5 upgrades Apple needs to make to stay relevant with Samsung and Google

The Apple Watch Series 11 is likely right around the corner. Every year, Apple tends to close out smartwatch launch season with a September release that follows new watches from Samsung and Google in July and August, respectively. I already got my hands on the latest Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and put it through thorough testing, with impressive results. The Google Pixel Watch 4, meanwhile, is slated for a likely August 20 debut at the Made by Google event taking place on that date. While nothing has been confirmed, rumors hint at a seriously upgraded next-gen Pixel Watch from Google. Assuming those rumors come to fruition and based on all we learned about the Galaxy Watch 8, Apple has its work cut out this time around. With that in mind, these are the five upgrades Apple needs to make to keep the Apple Watch Series 11 relevant against its core competition. Multi-band GPS isn't just for super-high-end smartwatches anymore. Both the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 8 offer multi-band GPS, while the Apple Watch Series 10 relies on a single-band GPS antenna. In short, more bands mean better connectivity in tricky locations where the sky might be obstructed. Think: city centers and heavily wooded areas. While the Google Pixel Watch 3 similarly sports single-band GPS, rumors suggest that the new Pixel Watch 4 could get an upgrade to match the latest Galaxy Watches. If that occurs, Apple will be the only major smartwatch manufacturer whose flagship device doesn't offer multi-band. And even though the Apple Watch Series 10 is a fairly reliable fitness tracker, there's certainly room for improvement. For example, when I recently biked 12 miles with the Apple Watch 10 vs the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8, the latter proved more accurate. That bike route, notably, included a lot of trees and tall buildings. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Unlike Samsung, Google and Garmin, Apple doesn't provide any sort of daily energy or sleep score to help users better understand their overall health. This is a shame. Of course, the best Apple Watch models already provide a decent level of sleep insights, even if it's not as detailed as what you get from Samsung or Garmin. However, the addition of a numeric sleep score out of 100 would bring Cupertino's sleep insights much more in line with industry leaders. Likewise, some sort of score that takes into account both sleep quality and recent physical fitness would also be a major upgrade for Apple Watch owners (and something I've been wanting for a long time, too). After all, Garmin's Body Battery metric has been around since 2018, and Fitbit's Readiness Score goes back to 2021. That said, Samsung's Energy Score only debuted last summer, so Apple isn't alone in joining the energy score party late. Let's just hope this is the year it happens. Ever since the very first Apple Watch model arrived more than a decade ago, the flagship Apple Watch series has been stubbornly stuck at just 18 hours per charge in standard mode. However, with the latest Galaxy Watch 8 models cruising for 30 hours per charge for the 40mm and 44mm models and 40-plus hours for the 46mm Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, Apple had better take battery life a bit more seriously this time around. Likewise, in our testing, the smaller Pixel Watch 3 model was good for about 24 hours per charge, while the larger Pixel Watch 3 battery is good for 48 hours per charge. Expect those numbers to increase slightly when the Pixel Watch 4 debuts. For the last handful of years, each new generation of the best smartwatch has debuted with a noticeably brighter screen, and 2025 sees the trend continuing. Samsung bumped up maximum brightness to 3,000 nits on the Galaxy Watch 8, an increase of 50% over the Galaxy Watch 7 (2,000 nits max brightness). With rumors suggesting that the Pixel Watch 4 will see a similar increase to 3,000 nits, here's hoping Apple follows suit. For reference, the Apple Watch Series 10 maxes at 2,000 nits while the Apple Watch Ultra 2 tops out at 3,000 nits. I've been pleasantly surprised by how actually useful Google's Gemini AI assistant is on the Galaxy Watch 8. Whether it's inquiring about my dog eating too many blueberries or asking for clothing recommendations for an upcoming trip, what I get from Gemini on the Galaxy Watch is a far cry from the Apple Watch's on-wrist Siri experience. The Google Pixel Watch 4 will almost certainly debut with Gemini AI as well, leaving Apple Watch owners to ask, 'What about us?' Unfortunately, as of right now, there's little to suggest that an Apple Intelligence-powered Siri will show up in the Apple Watch Series 11 this fall (an overhauled Siri in spring 2026 is much more likely), and that's a real bummer. While folks with the best smartwatch models for Android are having all their most burning questions answered with ease from the wrist, watchOS fans will likely have to wait at least another six months or more before an AI assistant as good as Gemini makes its way to the Apple Watch.
