Al Rayyan emerge as Amir Cup basketball champions
Tribune News Network Doha Al Rayyan clinched the 2024–2025 Amir Cup Basketball Championship after defeating Al Arabi 77–70 in a thrilling final held at the Al Gharafa Indoor Sports Hall on Thursday. Al Rayyan overcame early pressure from Al Arabi to claim the prestigious crown. Al Arabi started strong, edging the first period 14-13. Al Rayyan responded by taking a narrow lead in the second period (26-24), but Al Arabi came back in the third quarter with a 20-17 run. In the decisive final period, Al Rayyan dominated with a 21-12 surge, sealing the victory and the championship. Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb crowned Al Rayyan as champions in front of a vibrant crowd. The match featured a standout performance by Al Rayyan's Abdullah Yassin Musa, who led all scorers with 18 points. Al Arabi's Abdulrahman Saad and Mustafa Hussein also impressed, each contributing 17 points in a strong but ultimately unsuccessful effort. With this victory, Al Rayyan have now claimed a record 10 Amir Cup titles, further cementing their status as the most successful team in the tournament's history. Notably, their dominance began in the inaugural 1999-2000 edition, where they also triumphed over Al Arabi in the final. Al Mughaiseeb said, 'We at the federation are very happy with Al Rayyan's return to the top of the league. This distinguished club has a long history in Qatari basketball, and its return to winning after years of absence restores balance and strong competition among the clubs.' He also praised Al Arabi's performance, saying, 'We must commend Al Arabi's performance this season. They were a fierce and won the league title, the Qatar Cup, and, before that, the Arab Championship, which was hosted by Alexandria. This demonstrates the club's distinguished administrative and technical work.' For his part, QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari praised the high technical level displayed in the Amir Cup final, stressing that the game lived up to expectations in terms of performance, organization, and crowd attendance. 'Today's final was an example of what basketball should be like in Qatar. The performance of both teams was outstanding and the fans were a key partner in the event's success.'

Final stage of second division basketball league kicks off tomorrow
Sana'a - Saba: The final stage of the Second Division Basketball League (Group One – Sana'a Cluster) will begin tomorrow, Wednesday evening, at Al-Ahli Club Hall in Sana'a, running from May 21 to 24. The clubs May 22, Shaab Ibb, and Al-Hilal Al-Hodeida will compete for the qualifying ticket from this group to the First Division, playing in a single round-robin format to determine the group leader and the advancing team. The matches will open tomorrow, Wednesday, with a strong clash between May 22 and Al-Hilal. On Thursday, Shaab Ibb and Al-Hilal will face off, while the cluster's matches will conclude next Saturday with a game between Shaab Ibb and May 22. The three teams qualified for the final stage (Sana'a Cluster) after securing victories in the first-round matches. Shaab Ibb defeated Talia' Taiz in both house and away matches, Al-Hilal Al-Hodeida overcame Shabab Al-Jeel in the away match after losing the home game, advancing on aggregate, while May 22 triumphed over Shabab Al-Mahwit and Al-Ahmadi Rada'. Meanwhile, the second group of the final stage (Seiyun Cluster) of the Second Division League is scheduled to begin the day after tomorrow, Thursday, with the participation of Talia' Lahj, Wahdat Tarim, and Tadamon Al-Mukalla. In this regard, Jamal Ibrahim, Secretary-General of the Yemeni Basketball Federation, anticipated that the second-stage matches would be more intense, as the leader of each group will directly qualify for the First Division. A later match will then be held between the two group leaders to determine the Second Division champion. He explained that with the completion of the Second Division League, the federation will have executed 80% of its plan for the 2024-2025 season, leaving 20% of activities, including the Republic Cup, which will take place after the participation of the national junior team in the West Asia Championship next July, as well as Yemen's participation in the Arab Championship and the 3×3 Arab Championship. Ibrahim noted that despite the difficult circumstances, the federation was keen to implement its plan and achieved notable success in the current sports season, which began with the Super Cup, followed by the First Division League, the Republic Youth Championship, and now the Second Division League. He added that the federation is working diligently to conclude its season successfully by completing the remaining competitions and external participations. The Secretary-General of the Basketball Federation praised the clubs' cooperation in making the season a success, acknowledging the efforts of specialized committees, coaches, technical staff, referees, players in supporting the federation's activities and events. Sheikh Joaan hosts Qatar handball team in Kuwait following historic Arab Cup victory

The 25–22 victory over Bahrain on Sunday marked Qatar's first-ever Arab Cup title in men's handball. The final was held at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Complex and capped a dominant run by the Qatari side, which completed the tournament with a perfect record. The championship, hosted in Kuwait from May 5 to 11, returned to the regional calendar for the first time since 2002, featuring nine participating nations divided across three groups. Qatar advanced from Group B after defeating Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 31–22 and edging Tunisia 31–30. In the semifinal, they overcame Egypt 25–19 before closing out the tournament with a hard- fought win over Bahrain. Sheikh Joaan commended the players and coaching staff for their discipline, consistency, and character throughout the competition, describing the performance as a point of national pride and a reflection of years of investment in the sport. Several emerging players were instrumental in the campaign, offering further evidence of the QOC's long-term commitment to athlete development. Joining Sheikh Joaan at the reception were Ahmad Al Shaabi, President of the Qatar Handball Association; and Jassim Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary-General of the QOC. Handball has long been one of Qatar's most successful sports, and the Arab Cup title adds to a growing legacy that includes continental and global achievements. The victory in Kuwait was especially significant, not only for its historic nature but for the promise it revealed in a team that blended experience with rising talent. The return of the Arab Championship after more than two decades was seen by many as an important platform for regional competition. UAE wins 5 medals at Arab Golf Championship in Cairo

The event concluded today in Egypt, marking another milestone for UAE golf. Women's team shines with team and individual medals The UAE women's team—Sara Ali, Hana Cheryl, and Intesar Al Reesh—earned the silver medal in the team competition, finishing with a score of 13 over par. In the individual competition, Hana Cheryl won silver with a score of 7 over par, and Sara Ali captured bronze with 9 over par. Strong showing from U-18 youth team The UAE Under-18 youth team claimed second place overall with a score of 37 over par. Rashid Al Naqbi earned a bronze medal in the individual event, scoring 11 over par. Valuable experience for U-16 and U-13 participants The U-16 junior team—featuring Mohammed Thabet, Abdullah Darwish, and Abdullah Salmeen—finished eighth in their first Arab Championship appearance. In the U-13 singles category, Zayed Ali finished fourteenth, gaining valuable experience for future competitions. Emirates Golf Federation praises performance and preparation Major General (Ret.) KUWAIT CITY, May 10: The curtain falls tonight on the 10th Arab Handball Cup for Men, as the highly anticipated final takes place at 7:00 PM at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex. The decisive clash will feature Qatar taking on Bahrain, with the Qatari "Annabi" team aiming to claim their first-ever Arab Cup title, while the Bahraini "Reds" look to secure their second championship win. Prior to the final, the third-place match will be held between host nation Kuwait and Egypt, who both fell short in the semi-finals. The championship, which began on May 5, featured nine participating teams, divided into three groups. The top teams from each group and the best-performing runner-up advanced to the semi-finals. In the semi-final matches, Qatar defeated Egypt 25–19 to book their place in the final, while Bahrain overcame a determined Kuwaiti side 29–24 to advance. In the classification matches for 5th–9th place: The Tunisian "Carthage Eagles" beat the Moroccan "Atlas Lions" 35–32. The Saudi "Green" topped the Iraqi "Lions of Mesopotamia" 25–20. This is the 10th edition of the Arab Championship.
