Barcelona star returns to training ahead of Athletic Club clash
A leading member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona on Saturday marked his return to group training. The player in question? Ronald Araújo. Stopper Araújo, for his part, was a notable absentee from Barcelona's matchday squad to face Villarreal last weekend. This came owing to a niggling knee problem on the part of the Uruguayan. Araújo, in turn, had been forced to sit out training across the week to date, throwing his status for Barca's season finale against Athletic Club up in the air. As alluded to above, though, on Saturday morning, the 26-year-old was back in the thick of things at The Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. As confirmed by journalist Alex Pintanel of Relevo, and showcased in the photo below, Araújo took part in group training earlier today. The central defender is therefore expected to be afforded a call-up to the Blaugrana's travelling squad bound for San Mamés on Sunday. 🚨📸 | Araujo is back in training after being left out of the squad against Villarreal due to knee discomfort [@alexpintanel] #fcblive ✅ — BarçaTimes (@BarcaTimes) May 24, 2025 Conor Laird – GSFN

I believe in him: Barcelona manager Flick confident Araujo will stay next season
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said on Saturday he was counting on defender Ronald Araujo for next season after the Uruguayan's dip in form and injuries raised doubts about his future with the club. The 26-year-old Araujo missed half the season with a hamstring injury, after which he struggled to regain a regular starting place and was criticised for his performance in Barcelona's 4-3 aggregate defeat by Inter Milan in the Champions League semifinals. Spanish media speculated that Araujo was set to leave in the close season, despite his contract being renewed earlier in 2025 for another six years. 'He signed the contract (with us), why not? I 100% have my confidence in him, and I believe in him,' Flick told reporters ahead of Sunday's final La Liga game at Athletic Bilbao. 'It was a really tough season for him, with the injury in the beginning, and then to come back, of course, (when defenders) Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez made a fantastic season playing together, and it was not easy at this moment to come in and show how good he is. 'He will also improve a lot when he starts with us in the pre-season.' ALSO READ: Liverpool's Salah named Premier League player of the season for second time Flick was also confident that Barcelona's 17-year-old talisman Lamine Yamal would extend his contract, saying, 'He loves playing for us.' Asked how he would rate Barcelona's season, after it won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup in his first season in charge, he replied, 'Between eight and 10.' The German coach said he would be watching the Women's Champions League final when defending champion Barcelona faces Arsenal in Lisbon later on Saturday. Barcelona's women's side has won the competition three times and is a heavy favourite for the final. 'I wish them great success. Hopefully, it wins the Champions League again, and this is a good goal for us next season,' said Flick.

Chelsea and Liverpool in transfer fight to sign £67m 'maestro' this summer
Chelsea and Liverpool have joined the race to sign Benfica defender Tomas Araujo after missing out on Dean Huijsen, according to reports. The Blues and the Reds were unable to land Huijsen from AFC Bournemouth with the Spain international joining Real Madrid instead. Chelsea and Liverpool are already turning their attentions towards alternative options and are now in a three-way fight to recruit Araujo. The 23-year-old is wanted by both English clubs as well as French champions Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the summer transfer window, Foot Mercato have reported. Araujo, who earned his first international cap for Portugal last year, is believed to have a €80m (£67m) release clause in his Benfica contract. He has been dubbed a 'technical maestro' and an 'elite player' by football scouts on X, who have highlighted Araujo's turns, dribbling, passing, speed, build-up impact and ability to win duels as some of his biggest strengths. Araujo came through Benfica's academy and has established himself as a important star, playing a total of 67 first-team games for the club to date. Araujo helped Benfica land the Taça da Liga (Portuguese League Cup) this season and could now be heading to a bigger European team this summer. He also shined in the academy before his breakthrough, winning the 2022 UEFA Youth League and being named in the Team of the Tournament. PSG appear to be the frontrunners to land Araujo at this moment in time having initiated talks to sign him last summer. The Ligue 1 didn't end up completing a deal for Araujo but he is still high up on their wishlist for the upcoming summer window. Liverpool and Chelsea are yet to make an offer to sign Araujo but they are thought to be watching his situation closely ahead of a possible swoop. Chelsea are also looking at other defensive options if they miss out on Araujo to either Liverpool or PSG. It was reported last month that the Blues have looked at Ajax's 19-year-old defender Jorrel Hato. More Trending Hato, who can play as a centre-back or left-back, has established himself as an important player for Ajax since progressing through their academy. It has been suggested that Ajax would demand at least £40m for the Netherlands international. Chelsea have also been keeping tabs on Premier League stars Marc Guehi and Jarrad Branthwaite, who play for Crystal Palace and Everton. Guehi, 24, has impressed in the centre of Palace's defence and Chelsea know the player well given he came through the Blues' academy. Mixed reality headsets to help drive blood donations
A new pilot scheme has been launched that will see blood donors being offered mixed reality headsets while they donate. Users will be able to play relaxing, immersive games designed to distract them and reduce anxiety. It is also hoped the scheme will encourage more young people to consider blood donation. The experience is called mixed reality rather than virtual reality because the user can still see their surroundings while they play. The lightweight headsets have a translucent visor, so the eyes of donors are always visible to clinical staff, ensuring constant monitoring. The games are controlled through head-tracking technology, so users do not need to move their arms. There are two games to choose from; a zen garden that allows users to plant seeds while listening to relaxing music, and 'Intergalactica' in which donors build a team of robots to explore planets and solve puzzles. Health technology company Abbot is behind the project which has already been rolled out in a number of countries. A study with two blood centres in the US found that the use of mixed reality decreased anxiety in 68% of donors and 89% of donors reported they were very or extremely likely to donate again. "These headsets balance complex computing with a simple insight – many people fear donating blood and mixed reality technology makes it easier to donate blood by giving the donors something else to focus on," said Abbot's Transfusion Medicine Global Marketing Director Joana Araujo. "We hope that the improved experience leads to more people wanting to donate blood in Ireland," Ms Araujo said. Conor Cody has been a regular donor for three years and tried the new technology at a blood donation clinic in Dublin. "It was very relaxing and I was completely engrossed in the game, I really enjoyed it," Mr Cody said. "If you have any slight fear of what's going on, it takes your mind off it completely." "I'm used to it now so it doesn't bother me, but the time just flew, and I really enjoyed the game," he added. The pilot initiative will run between May and June in a number of Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) donation centres in Dublin and Cork. The IBTS will then gather feedback from donors before deciding if it will adopt the scheme on a more long-term basis. "This innovative technology introduces a gaming-like experience which evidence and feedback suggests makes blood, platelet and plasma donation less intimidating and more fun for the donor," said ICTS Director of Donor Services and Logistics Paul McKinney. "We also hope it will encourage many people, of all ages, who want to donate but have been nervous about doing so in the past." "Blood supplies are very low right now, the summer demand has been huge and hospitals have been very busy," Mr McKinney said. "The good weather is not working in our favour and our attendances are not as high as we would like," he added. The IBTS is calling for donors from all ethnic backgrounds to help meet patient demand.
