Japan Touts Ships Expertise, LNG Investment as Tariff Talks Key

Japan may offer financial and technical contributions ranging from investment in an Alaskan LNG pipeline project to shipbuilding expertise as it seeks to smooth the path toward a tariff deal with the US by mid-June. Japan will tout its prowess in building ice-breakers, a growing area of need as security concerns in the Arctic region mount, while also offering to help repair US battleships that patrol the Asia-Pacific, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Sunday, as his hand-picked trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa returned to Tokyo following a third-round of discussions with US counterparts in Washington.

Arctic energy, security on agenda as Western premiers meet in Yellowknife

Premiers from Western Canada are to meet Wednesday for the first of a two-day conference in Yellowknife. Premiers from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are set to attend the annual conference. Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson's office says the leaders will discuss a range of issues, including Arctic and energy security, trade and emergency preparedness. It says housing, economic corridors and tariffs are also on the agenda. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe's office says he plans to discuss a number of priorities he's put to Prime Minister Mark Carney to take on, including strengthening the Criminal Code and allowing provinces to have full responsibility of the industrial carbon levy. Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok says his main focus will be on the Arctic and the need for infrastructure to protect the security and sovereignty of the North. He says the Arctic has incredible resource potential, which is why he wants to see more conversation around infrastructure building.

Denmark to Host Meeting on Arctic Security

The leaders of Denmark, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Norway will meet Monday for talks on Arctic security, Denmark's government said, as US President Donald Trump vies to gain control of Greenland. Trump has repeatedly said the US needs the strategically-located resource-rich Arctic island for security reasons, and has refused to rule out the use of force to secure it. Trump's comments have sparked concern in other Arctic regions as well, including Iceland and Norway's Svalbard archipelago. The remarks have also angered Danish and Greenlandic leaders, who have insisted that the island will decide its own future and the US "will not get Greenland." "Even though our countries meet in different parts of the world, it is natural that we, in this circle of countries, meet to discuss the current security situation in the Arctic and the North Atlantic," AFP quoted Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen as saying in a statement issued on Sunday. Monday's talks will be held in Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, and be attended by Frederiksen as well as Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Iceland's Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir and Faroe Islands Prime Minister Aksel Johannesen. Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store will participate via video link.
