‘We will not stay silent': Ariana Grande and Pedro Pascal among supporters of LGBTQ+ suicide lifeline

Pedro Pascal, Ariana Grande and Jamie Lee Curtis are among the names included on an open letter aimed at protecting federal funds for LGBTQ+ suicide prevention. In collaboration with nonprofit organisation The Trevor Project, the letter has been released during Pride month and also features names such as Dua Lipa, Daniel Radcliffe, Troye Sivan, Sabrina Carpenter and Nathan Lane. 'As artists, creators, and public figures, our platforms come with responsibility,' the letter reads. 'And today, that responsibility is clear: we must speak out to protect the mental health and lives of LGBTQ+ youth. We will not stay silent.' It follows reports of a proposal to eliminate funding for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline's LGBTQ+ youth specialized services. Since its implementation in 2022, it's provided help to over 14m people. LGBTQ+ people are roughly four times more likely to kill themselves than their peers. 'This is about people, not politics,' the letter reads. 'At a time of deep division, let this be something we as people can all agree on: no young person should be left without help in their darkest moment. Stripping away this lifeline leaves LGBTQ+ youth with the message that their lives are not worth saving. We refuse to accept that message.' The letter calls on the administration and Congress to 'restore and protect' funding in the 2026 budget. 'You may be hurting,' the letter reads. 'You may be scared. You may feel like no one hears you – but we do. We will keep showing up and speaking out. We will not stop fighting for you.' Pascal, Grande and Curtis have all been vocal allies with LGBTQ+ family members. Pascal, who has a transgender sister, recently called JK Rowling a 'heinous loser' in response to her transphobic views. The list of names on the letter, which also includes Diplo, Sarah Paulson and Cara Delevingne, will continue to be updated on a rolling basis. In a statement, Trevor Project CEO Jamyes Black added: 'I am deeply grateful to the influential voices in entertainment who are speaking out and reminding the public that suicide prevention is about people – not politics.'

Pedro Pascal, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter are among the more than 100 celebrities who have signed an open letter calling for the protection of $50 million in federal funds earmarked for LGBTQ youth suicide prevention programs. The letter comes following an April news report about the leaked draft of the budget of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.. The draft reportedly calls for plans to eliminate all funding for LGBTQ youth suicide prevention services through 988, a federal program that provides emergency crisis support to LGBTQ+ youth considering suicide. And today, that responsibility is clear: we must speak out to protect the mental health and lives of LGBTQ+ youth,' the beginning of the letter reads, in part. 'We will not stay silent.' The letter goes onto explain that since its launch in 2022, the 988 program has helped connect 'nearly 1.3 million crisis contacts with life-saving, affirming care to LGBTQ+ young people during their most vulnerable moments. Suicide among LGBTQ+ youth is a public health crisis, and it should be treated as such.' Other celebs to sign the letter include Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Paulson, Orville Peck, Bob the Drag Queen. Daniel Radcliffe, Troye Sivan, Alan Cumming, Margaret Cho, Nathan Lane, Kelsea Ballerini, director Paul Feig, Dylan Mulvaney, David Archuleta, Benito Skinner, Sutton Stacke, Franke Grande, Colton Underwood and 'Wednesday' star Hunter Doohan. 'This is about people, not politics,' the letter also reads. 'At a time of deep division, let this be something we as Americans can all agree on: no young person should be left without help in their darkest moment. Stripping away this lifeline leaves LGBTQ+ youth with the message that their lives are not worth saving. We refuse to accept that message.' Trevor Project CEO Jaymes Black thanked those who signed the letter. 'I am deeply grateful to the influential voices in entertainment who are speaking out and reminding the public that suicide prevention is about people – not politics,' he said in a statement. 'It is clinical best practice for highly trained counselors to provide competent care to high-risk communities, including LGBTQ+ youth and veterans. LGBTQ+ young people disproportionately experience rejection, stigma, and discrimination, and are navigating a world that too often tells them they don't belong.' Ariana Grande joins Robert De Niro in new sequel

Ariana Grande, the Grammy-winning singer and Oscar nominee, is stepping into the world of comedy films. She has signed on to star alongside Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller in the next Meet the Parents movie. Universal Studios confirmed on Friday that Ariana will join the beloved franchise for its fourth instalment. The original trilogy has grossed over R19.5 billion worldwide. The upcoming film will be written and directed by John Hamburg, who worked on the earlier movies. The plot promises a fun reversal of roles, according to Daily Mail. This time, Ariana's character will be the new fiancée in the family. She is described as a 'ball-busting woman who seems all wrong' for her fiancé. Ariana herself shared the exciting news on Instagram Stories. She posted headlines from The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, writing, 'Very thrilled to be joining (meeting) the family.' Ariana Grande also shared a nostalgic snap of Robert De Niro, playing a former CIA officer, conducting a polygraph test on Ben Stiller from the original 2000 comedy. South African fans have taken to social media to express their excitement. One fan wrote, 'ACTORIANA on the rise,' while another said, 'Ariana in a comedy movie… this is the best day of my life.' A proud supporter added, 'SO PROUD OF MY GIRL ❤️.' However, some fans lamented that Ariana Grande might be stepping back from music. 'We will never see her touring again,' one follower commented. This is understandable, as Ariana recently told Variety she plans to focus more on acting. She said, 'Acting is feeling like home right now. I feel so grateful for it.' South African movie lovers can look forward to a hilarious new chapter in a franchise that has already brought so much joy. The film is expected to hit theatres in November 2026. Given the local appetite for both comedy and star-studded casts, it's sure to be a hit here. Meanwhile, fans of Ariana's musical talents need not worry. She reassured her followers, 'Music and being on stage will always be a part of my life.' But for now, acting is her main focus. With her star shining brighter than ever, South African fans have plenty to look forward to on both the big screen and in the theatre.
