Newcastle United register interest in Arnaud Kalimuendo
Newcastle United have reportedly registered an interest in French forward Arnaud Kalimuendo as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season. According to L'Equipe, Newcastle are not alone in their pursuit of Kalimuendo, with Primeira Liga champions Sporting CP also in the race amid Viktor Gyokeres' expected exit. However, the Magpies could have an edge over their Portuguese counterparts, with Kalimuendo believed to be keen on a move to the top tier of English football. Currently playing for Stade Rennais in Ligue 1, the striker has caught the attention of several clubs after an impressive season in France. He netted 17 goals in 33 matches last time out, only behind Ousmane Dembele and Mason Greenwood in the scoring charts. The 23-year-old forward came through the Paris Saint-Germain youth system before making a permanent switch to Rennes in 2022 and steadily developed into one of Ligue 1's most promising attackers. Having moved to Rennes for a €20 million fee three years ago, Kalimuendo is expected to command a transfer fee of around double that amount as he looks set to enter the prime years of his career. Newcastle scouts have reportedly been monitoring Kalimuendo for several months, and the club's recruitment team is said to be impressed not only with his goal-scoring ability but also with his work ethic and tactical intelligence — traits that fit well with Howe's high-pressing style. Newcastle's desire to bring in a new centre forward is not far-fetched given the impending departure of Callum Wilson and the uncertain future of Alexander Isak, who is attracting interest from all around Europe. Qualifying for Champions League football could be the key to retaining Isak's services, and Newcastle will set out to secure a top-four finish by beating Everton in their final Premier League fixture tomorrow.

Rennes survive double-touch penalty scare to beat 10-man Nantes 2-1
RENNES, France (AP) — Rennes had a first-half penalty chalked off for a rare double touch but bounced back to beat Nantes 2-1 in an action-packed Ligue 1 match on Friday. Arnaud Kalimuendo scored the penalty after 14 minutes but like Julian Alvarez for Atletico Madrid against Real Madrid in their recent Champions League tie, the referee ruled he touched the ball with his supporting leg and ruled it out. Rennes, though, was not foiled for long, as captain Adrien Truffert put the home side ahead with an angled drive 10 minutes later. Mostafa Mohamed equalized for Nantes in the second half after some nice footwork close to goal but his side was dealt a big blow four minutes later when Marcus Coco was shown a straight red card for elbowing Truffert in the face. Mohamed Meite bagged the winner four minutes from time when he headed home a cross from the left. Rennes' second win in a row liftd it into 10th place. Nantes remaind 13th. ___ AP soccer:
