From the sidelines to the spotlight

I've been attending the vibrant and deeply cultural celebration of Hoobiyee (Nisga'a New Year) for nearly 20 years. But this year marked a special milestone — it was the first time I stepped out of the audience and into the spotlight as a performer. After years of watching others take part, I finally decided it was time. Not only was I eager to learn, but this experience felt long overdue. What gave me the final push to just 'do it' (as Arnie would say) and face my fears was the inspiration and support I received from my family. My grandson Ashton and daughter-in-law Audrey were both active in the dance practices leading up to Hoobiyee, and my son Clinton, offering his moral support, plans to get more involved in the years to come. Their enthusiasm reminded me that it's never too late to participate in the traditions that shape us. There's a deep sense of pride and joy that comes with being part of something so meaningful. I now find myself wondering what took me so long to get more involved. From creating my own regalia, to taking part in the Grand Entry, it was an incredible honour. This experience has set me on a new path — attending regular Monday night dance practices and eventually performing at the Aboriginal Friendship Centre on East Hastings Street. I'm excited for all that's to come. Hoobiyee is an annual celebration marking the Nisga'a New Year every February or March. Rooted in the traditional observation of the first crescent moon and the changing seasons, it's a time of renewal, abundance and community gathering. While I won't go into the full history here (there's so much richness to explore), I encourage you to find out for yourselves and maybe even attend one day. It is truly something special. In Vancouver, the 2025 Hoobiyee took place Feb. 28 and March 1 at the PNE Forum. Yvonne Mark (Nisga'a-Gitxsan) is a Megaphone vendor and member of The Shift peer newsroom. She has taken part in many creative writing and journalism workshops through Megaphone, and was featured in the 2021 Voices of the Street podcast. She is an outspoken advocate for the Downtown Eastside. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. Please try again. Get to da choppa! 'Predator' movies ranked (including 'Killer of Killers')

Get to da choppa! 'Predator' movies ranked (including 'Killer of Killers') Show Caption Hide Caption 'Predator: Badlands' movie trailer: Predator meets android A young outcast Predator (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) befriends an android (Elle Fanning) on a remote planet in sci-fi film "Predator: Badlands." Love movies? Live for TV? USA TODAY's Watch Party newsletter has all the best recommendations, delivered right to your inbox. Sign up now and be one of the cool kids. If "I ain't got time to bleed" is part of your daily vernacular, you're probably a "Predator" fan. (Or maybe just really into Jesse "The Body" Ventura.) Since Arnold Schwarzenegger threw down with an intergalactic alien super-hunter in the jungle back in 1987, the franchise has churned out a sci-fi action flick every so often to keep the Predators alive and kicking in pop culture. Those guys even crossed over with the "Alien" universe in the 2000s. But we're in a bit of an interesting time for all things "Predator." Director Dan Trachtenberg's 2022 prequel "Prey" was a popular streaming hit, and he's got two new franchise projects this year. The animated "Predator: Killer of Killers" movie (streaming now on Hulu) is an anthology movie showing three periods in Earth history where the Predator took on the fiercest of human warriors. And "Predator: Badlands" (in theaters Nov. 7) features a young Predator partnering with an android (Elle Fanning) to seek out a shared adversary on a remote planet. So to borrow from Arnie, let's get to "da choppa" and rank all the "Predator" movies so far. (Like "Killers," the past franchise films are available on Hulu.) 8. 'Alien vs. Predator' (2004) The Predators have always been about hunting the biggest game, and in the first "AvP" outing, that's not Earthlings – it's those pesky Xenomorphs. The silly B-movie features a science team exploring a pyramid (!) underneath Antarctica and finding a mess of Facehuggers and a Xenomorph queen, but it doesn't get interesting until a Predator and Xenomorph have an epic staredown. 7. 'Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem' (2007) The "AvP" sequel is only nominally better, taking the extraterrestrial rumble to Colorado. A ship crashes, unleashing Xenomorphs on an unsuspecting town and bringing a craft of Predators to Earth to kill them. Humans and their dramas – from shady government shenanigans to teen love – just slow down the sci-fi brawls we all want to witness. That said, extra points for having the guts to show a Chestburster gruesomely pop out of a young boy. 6. 'The Predator' (2018) Shane Black, who actually played one of Arnie's commandos in the original "Predator," directs this goofy and gory reboot that dares to have Jacob Tremblay wear a Predator battle helmet out trick-or-treating. (Is nothing sacred?!) This kid is mailed alien tech by his mercenary dad (Boyd Holbrook), he turns it on, and the situation gets bonkers as a beefy Super Predator and some Predator dogs cause a bunch of suburban chaos. 5. 'Predators' (2010) This post-"AvP" revisit has a lot going for it, including an impressive cast (Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne and Walton Goggins) and a pretty nifty premise. The worst killers on Earth are captured and taken to an alien planet/game preserve where they're hunted by two warring Predator factions. The character development is atrocious but the action's pretty cool as it tries to capture the first movie's jungle-tastic kill-or-be-killed vibe. 4. 'Predator 2' (1990) How do you make a sweltering summer and a brewing gang war in LA worse? You got it, throw in a Predator! Our heavily armored alien menace starts taking out drug cartel goons and making a mess, and a couple of cops (Danny Glover and Bill Paxton) plus an unhinged DEA agent (Gary Busey) are on the case to investigate. Outside of the first "Lethal Weapon," it's one of Glover's top action flicks. 3. 'Predator: Killer of Killers' (2025) A deeper "Predator" mythology comes to life in stylistically violent fashion with the animated movie, which features three tales – of a Viking raider queen, a ninja in feudal Japan and a hotshot American World War II pilot – who all have a run-in with a Predator. But what's really cool is how the movie brings those story lines together in a narrative filled with intriguing twists, gnarly kills, heroic sacrifices and a slew of nifty new Predator designs. 2. 'Prey' (2022) The prequel that finally brought needed respect to the franchise was an 18th-century period piece that finds a Predator meeting his match in a young Comanche woman hungry for battle. Amber Midthunder had a breakout role as Naru, who yearns for the "big hunt" to prove herself to the men of her tribe, and she gets a great character arc that involves insanely bloody kills and cool Predator gadgets. 1. 'Predator' (1987) The '80s were the height of macho cinema, and the OG "Predator" was definitely one of the highlights. Schwarzenegger's team of soldiers goes into a Central American jungle for a rescue and ends up needing help themselves when hunted down one by one by a Predator. From the tobacco spitting to the bicep popping – what action-movie fan hasn't used that handshake GIF with Arnie and the inimitable Carl Weathers? – the bonkers adventure is so full of testosterone that you can't dispute its hallowed place in the annals of dude movies.

Danny DeVito And Arnold Schwarzenegger Were Caught Gossiping About Colin Farrell's Outfit, And I'm Literally Obsessed

The latest season of Variety's Actors On Actors is officially underway, with some more A-list names pairing up for a candid chat about their careers and recent projects for our viewing entertainment. However, this time around, one of the best celebrity interactions might have happened outside of the actual interviews, with Danny DeVito gatecrashing Arnold Schwarzenegger's conversation with his son Patrick Schwarzenegger ahead of his own chat with Colin Farrell. For reference, Danny and Arnie have been close friends for decades, with the two famously playing twin brothers in the 1988 comedy Twins, and when Danny arrived at the studio to film his and Colin's Actors On Actors episode, he couldn't resist checking in on his old buddy — and luckily for us, it was all caught on camera. In behind-the-scenes footage that was posted to Variety's social media platforms on Wednesday, it appears that Arnold and Patrick had just wrapped their own interview when Patrick spots Danny making a beeline for them, exclaiming: 'Danny DeVito! Wow!' while Arnie jokingly mutters: 'Oh, Jesus.' Pulling him in, Danny tells his pal's son: 'Congratulations! You are slaying it, everything, really good.' He then hugs Arnie and they call one another 'brother,' with Arnie instigating a group photo. He then asks Danny: 'What are you doing here?' to which Danny simply replies: 'Colin Farrell.' 'Are you doing one of these things? They're so much fun, we just had a great time, it was great,' Arnold replies. But when Patrick says: 'I love Colin Farrell, he's so great,' things take a turn, with Danny telling the two men that he isn't happy with Colin's casual outfit for their episode. He says: 'Yeah. He's got a sweater on… He looks like a… He didn't wear a jacket, you know? I'm really pissed off at him.' Variety / Via 'You are?!' Arnold exclaims, and Danny shakes his head as he makes it clear that he is only playing. More official… You have to tell him: 'You know why I'm wearing a jacket? Because I'm unique…. A writer, director, producer, an actor. That's why I have to be dressed a little differently, OK?'' At some point during this exchange, Arnie and Danny lower their voices to a whisper, making what they are saying incomprehensible. 'Put that one on him,' Arnold concludes, with Danny adding: 'Give it to him! I already told him.' 'You have to,' Arnold agrees, and at this point, he and Danny link arms as Arnie asks producers: 'Where is he? Let's bother him right away, where's Colin?' All three stars then walk off set to find Colin, and it appears that they were successful, with Patrick recently sharing a photo of himself, his dad, Danny, and Colin to his Instagram story. It's worth noting that Colin is the only one who isn't smiling in this pic, and that is presumably because Danny and Arnold had teamed up to roast him over his chunky knit sweater just moments before. Needless to say, people are totally obsessed with Arnie and Danny's reunion, and many shared their response to Variety's video on a Reddit forum. One popular comment reads: 'This video ended too early. I'd watch another 2, 3... hours of Arnold and Danny chatting it up easily.' 'Omg this clip is so random and hilarious….' somebody else wrote. 'This grumpy old man energy made me chuckle.' Another observed: 'This might be a weird take but there's something kind of relaxing about how older celebrities talk to one another.' 'Idk why but him saying 'slaying it' immediately cheered me up,' one more said of Danny, while another called the two: 'Incredibly endearing." Predator: Killer of Killers review – animated anthology of Arnie's old antagonists

It's hard to imagine, back in 1987 when the first Predator film came out showcasing big Arnie's rippling biceps, that anyone could have predicted it would spawn such a diverse array of sequel material. But here we are: 2025 brings us an animated anthology, with Predators tearing human kind a new one in Viking times, samurai-era Japan, and Florida during the second world war. This follows the excellent 2022 movie Prey and the mostly stupid Alien vs Predator from 2004, in which a lady makes friends with a Predator, which rather nullifies the scare factor. Killer of Killers opens with the Viking chapter, The Shield, set in AD841. One of the film's better ideas is the Vikings referring to the Predator as Grendel, a reference of course to the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, in which a humanoid monster walks in darkness and hunts the weak … sound familiar? Much Game of Thrones style Sturm und Drang follows, before the most powerful Viking is abducted by the Predators who are essentially doing casting for their version of a reality show. This essentially sets the pattern for the rest of the film. Medieval Japan follows in The Sword, with some handy lessons about teamwork, and then it's on to The Bullet, set in Florida in wartime, a section home to some of the better action sequences, with planes getting sliced into cubes in mid-air by Team Alien. The only problem with this stuff is that you can't help picturing how much more spectacular it would look in live action. The animation is all perfectly competent but it's lacking a little something – that spark of life and ingenuity that can make even flawed animation so fascinating. There's something quite slick about all this, almost to a fault. Was AI involved? We'll probably never know, but it's a problem that the suspicion has got inside the door. Things pick up when we get to the Predators' homeworld for the final showdown, with a Viking, samurai and US pilot set to fight to the death in an arena for the entertainment of the locals. There are some decent jokes and the basic issue of communication between the three is a nice note. It could have sparked a little more joy, perhaps, but it's nice to see a franchise nearly 40 years old committed to constantly defying expectations. Predator: Killer of Killers is on Disney+ from 6 June
