England's substitutes become tight-knit group at Euro 2025
England's substitutes become tight-knit group at Euro 2025 Defending champions face off with Sweden ZURICH: Forward Chloe Kelly, who came off the bench to score a 110th-minute winner in the Euro 2022 final, said England's substitutes had become a tight-knit group at this year's tournament with their own WhatsApp group and goal celebration. With the defending champions playing Sweden in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals on Thursday, Kelly, whose shirt-waving celebration was the defining image of the last final, described the camaraderie among England's super subs. Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones scored as substitutes in England's 6-1 thrashing of Wales, and both made a beeline for the bench, snapping their fingers. 'A little group of us have a group chat, the finishers as you called it, and the positive 'clicks' we called it on the bench,' Kelly said at England's training base in Zurich. 'You've probably seen we all click (our fingers), and everyone's like, 'What are they doing?' 'We said if one of us comes on and scores, let's do that as our celebration,' she added. 'We work really hard on the training pitch and in the gym. Probably this sometimes goes unnoticed, but it's about sticking together, being at our best for when called upon, and training hard to get the best out of each other.' The image of the 27-year-old Arsenal forward whirling her shirt above her head after her goal at Wembley is among the most renowned in European women's football. Kelly knows that there are football fans with tattoos of that image. The notoriety she has received since then took some adjusting to, she said. 'But I'm just me, a girl from West London enjoying football, and that's what I'll continue to be throughout my career,' she said. 'I just love the game of football, and hopefully we can have many special memories as England together.' Kelly still watches the video of that goal, a tap-in from close range, on YouTube. 'I think it's just a special memory for me, one that I watch quite often if I ever need a little smile,' Kelly said. 'It's an incredible memory for me and my family. My mum sends it to me quite often as well. So it's nice to have such a special memory at an incredible stadium like Wembley.' There was concern earlier this year that Kelly might not make Sarina Wiegman's Euros squad because she was barely playing at Manchester City. She publicly expressed a desire to move ahead of January's transfer window, and Arsenal signed her first on a loan spell and then a free transfer after her City contract expired. — Reuters

Liverpool told to sign 'throwback' Arsenal transfer target to replace Luis Diaz
Emile Heskey has urged Liverpool to sign one of Arsenal's transfer targets if they decide to cash in on Luis Diaz this summer. The Colombian has been the subject of interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich this summer after lifting the Premier League title with Liverpool last season. The English club rebuffed an approach from Barca earlier in the summer and in recent days have turned down a £58.6million bid from Bayern. Liverpool are said to be in no hurry to sell Diaz this summer, who they value at €100m (£86.8m), but the 28-year-old winger is said to be keen for a new challenge. With two years still to run on his contract, this summer could prove the ideal time to cash in on Diaz, and former Reds striker Heskey believes a move could well be in Liverpool's interest. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. 'If Bayern Munich step up and are paying the right price, then I think it has to be considered,' he told 'Everyone is available if the price is right. 'I think it would be decent business if they could get a good offer in and move him on, but then the next thing to consider is who to get him in.' Liverpool have already spent heavily this summer, but would be expected to dip back into the market for a replacement to Diaz should the Colombian leave. And Heskey reckons the Merseyside club should consider a move for Anthony Gordon to provide a similar pace and dynamism to Diaz down the left flank. 'One player I like is Anthony Gordon at Newcastle, he'd be a great option,' Heskey added. 'He'd give you someone direct, who still understands how to take players on and beat them. 'He's a winger who gives you width and gets to the byline, who can entertain. 'We've lost that a bit and Anthony is a bit of a throwback to earlier times, but his dribbling and direct attacking gets fans off their seats.' More Trending Liverpool attempted to sign Gordon from Newcastle last summer but were unable to reach an agreement. The England international scored six goals and registered five assists in the Premier League last season and was among Arsenal's list of transfer targets this summer as they look for greater depth in wide attacking positions. The Gunners are already closing in on the signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea to provide more depth on the flanks. Mikel Arteta's side have also been linked with Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, who has also been attracting interest from Liverpool in recent days. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Tottenham warned transfer target will be on Arsenal and Man Utd's radar - 'No doubt'
Tottenham are understood to be pursuing Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa but Stuart Pearce reckons other top Premier League clubs will be keeping an eye on the Bees star Stuart Pearce believes that the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United will definitely have given some consideration to pursuing a deal for Yoane Wissa this summer as they search for attacking reinforcements. Both the Gunners and United are looking to sign a new forward this summer, though Arsenal are now seemingly close to finalising a deal worth £67million for Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres; a player who has also been heavily linked with the Red Devils. United remain in talks to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as they bid to bolster their attack before the new campaign. Tottenham were also interested in Mbeumo but with the Cameroon star only having eyes for United, they are now weighing up a move for his team-mate, who plundered 20 goals in all competitions for Brentford last term. But Spurs have been warned by Pearce that Wissa's fine form across the 2024-25 campaign will have other clubs pondering a move as the transfer window rolls on. "There's no doubt Manchester United and Arsenal would have been looking at Yoane Wissa," Pearce told BoyleSports, via The Metro. "When you look at the season he had last year, he was magnificent. The goals he's delivered while playing with width and playing down the middle as well. "That's a major asset for any football club and the fact that Nottingham Forest have moved the odd player on recently, along with other sides in the division, you would think that by the time the season starts, he might well have moved on [from Brentford]." While Nottingham Forest have already seen a bid rejected for Wissa this season, it remains to be seen if either Arsenal or United would be tempted to try and do a deal for the 28-year-old amid rival interest from Spurs, who want to reunite the DR Congo international with Thomas Frank in north London. Arsenal are said to have Ollie Watkins as an alternative target if they cannot get a deal for Gyokeres over the line, while United's pursuit of Mbeumo would likely kill any chance of a move for Wissa with Brentford unwilling to sanction exits for both of their leading attackers in the same transfer window. United have been locked in talks with Brentford for weeks over a deal for Mbeumo, who has made it clear he wants to move to Old Trafford. But an agreement is still seemingly no closer to being reached with both clubs standing firm on their valuation of the player.

Liverpool OVERTAKE Arsenal in €100m talks
Liverpool have reportedly overtaken Arsenal in pursuit of a €100m forward. The Reds are now closest to making this happen. Luis Diaz has massively complicated things at Liverpool. The Colombian wasn't supposed to leave this summer or at the least, the Reds didn't think he would. Diaz isn't exactly an untouchable at Anfield but the idea that someone would pay his asking price seemed farfetched. And the to be fair, it has been. Barcelona and Bayern Munich have each pushed for Diaz in the last few weeks. Both failed to get anywhere near what Liverpool would want in order to sell. But now the winger has made it clear to Liverpool that he wants out. And that may well force their hand as offers continue to arrive. At the very least, it has the Reds seeking a replacement and they appear to have found a very high-profile one. Liverpool lead Rodrygo race AS claims Liverpool are now at the front of the queue for Rodrygo. The outlet mentions that the Reds view him as a replacement for Diaz, should he leave the club this summer. And so they'll fly in for talks about Rodrygo. A deal might be able to happen, even if Real Madrid want €100m for their player. Importantly, Arsenal - previously considered favourites to sign Rodrygo - are now 'more distant' in the race than Liverpool. The Reds have stolen a march on the Gunners, pushing to the front and now signing the Brazilian is a real possibility. But there is a way to go just yet. Liverpool won't sign Rodrygo unless Diaz leaves but that will take a large fee in order to cover signing the replacement.

Arsenal Women set to sign Liverpool striker Olivia Smith in world-record deal
Liverpool striker Olivia Smith is set to join Arsenal in a world-record £1million deal. All agreements are in place with the deal set to be announced imminently. The 20-year-old was Liverpool Women's top scorer last season with seven goals after joining from Sporting Lisbon in July 2024 for a club record fee of €250,000 (£212,000). Arsenal's bid of £1m ($1.36m) exceeds the previous record fee set by Chelsea when they signed USWNT defender Naomi Girma from the San Diego Wave for $1.1m in January. Liverpool had finished fourth in the Women's Super League (WSL) and Matt Beard had been named manager of the year when she signed. They could not replicate this success last season as the side finished seventh and Beard was sacked in February. 'Even back then (when I was a child), I swear, I wanted to win a Ballon d'Or one day,' she said to in November 2024 . 'I wanted to play in a World Cup, in an Olympics, to play for my national team. 'I could see myself meeting my idols and playing against them.' Her longstanding ambition complements her move to Arsenal, who claimed their second Champions League title last season with victories over eight-time champions OL Lyonnes in the semi-final and 1-0 win over Barcelona in the Lisbon final. Arsenal finished second in the WSL last season behind unbeaten Chelsea, and have been active in the transfer window this summer, making Chloe Kelly's loan deal permanent from Manchester City, while Smith's Liverpool teammate Taylor Hinds also joined Renee Slegers' side following the expiration of her contract in Merseyside. In 2019 Smith became the youngest ever player to play for Canada, at 15 years old and 94 days, in a 4-0 loss to Brazil. She has made 16 appearances for the nation's senior team, scoring three and assisting three, and was named Canada Soccer's Young Player of the Year in 2024.
