Arthur Zwane says Orlando Pirates are a one-man team
Ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has singled out an Orlando Pirates player for special praise. Is it who you think it is, though? Arthur Zwane feels Orlando Pirates have relied heavily on the precious talents of 20-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng. 'I don't want to sound controversial. However, I think you look at Rele – I think he carried Orlando Pirates,' Zwane said via iDiski Times . 'But Rele as a youngster doing what he's done this past season, carrying a giant on his shoulder, I think it was something else, it was amazing. 'We need players like him, so others see him performing at this level. And now he's definitely going to go to the World Cup – I don't want people to say I'm picking him; I'm not the national coach. But looking at how coach Broos does, and he integrated into the senior national team,' Zwane added on the Orlando Pirates attacker. 'For him, it was a big jump because he never played for the U20, maybe the previous players, but because he's an exceptional talent. There is no doubt about he's gonna make AFCON and the World Cup. 'Also, the coaches must get some credit. All those coaches from the School of Excellence, Orlando Pirates, Jose [Riveiro], Duku Duku Makhanya. They spotted the talent and made life easy for the first team as well to get players promoted,' Zwane added. Top eight finish sparks belief at AmaZulu as Mthethwa urges team to aim higher

Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix AmaZulu defender Sandile Mthethwa has called on his teammates to keep believing in their potential after Usuthu sealed a Top 8 finish for the first time in three seasons. A 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday was enough for the KwaZulu-Natal outfit to end the campaign in sixth place — securing their return to the MTN8 competition next season. Mthethwa, who walked away with the Player of the Match award, has grown in stature since his arrival in December, becoming a crucial part of coach Arthur Zwane's defensive setup. The 27-year-old joined AmaZulu midway through the season alongside Bongani Zungu, at a time when the team was rebuilding after a poor start under former coach Pablo Franco. With Zwane now steering the ship, Mthethwa has settled quickly and believes the current group has the potential to go beyond just top-eight finishes. Video Player is loading. 'But we're still happy because we were able to achieve this season's mandate after we realised we couldn't get a top three spot.' AmaZulu's season took a sharp turn following the technical changes, with Zwane bringing stability and clarity to a squad that had been underperforming in the early months. Mthethwa, who has marshalled the backline with calmness and consistency, believes the core of the team is ready to push for more in the next campaign. 'We're a team that's looking to challenge for the league at some point and also go back to CAF,' he continued. 'I think we're capable of that looking at the kind of players we have and I genuinely believe that we can do that sort of thing moving forward.' The defender also acknowledged the experienced heads in the squad and credited the technical staff for their belief in the players. 'We have a good group of experienced players that I found when I got here with the addition of Bongani (Zungu),' Mthethwa added. 'We should also give credit to the coach who keeps believing in us and is always reminding us to believe that we can achieve those levels. I'm confident next season we will return a different club.'

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane welcomes Durban City PSL promotion as boost for KwaZulu-Natal soccer
Durban City Durban City will have to wait another day to hear if they have won automatic promotion to the Premiership. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane has welcomed the imminent promotion of Durban City to the Premiership, hailing it as a positive development for KwaZulu-Natal football. City's top-flight return is all but confirmed after the Premier Soccer League's Disciplinary Committee (PSL DC) dismissed a protest from JDR Stars, who alleged that Durban City improperly registered midfielder Saziso Magawana. While another protest – this time from Cape Town Spurs – is still pending, the result that crowned Durban City as Motsepe Foundation Championship winners and relegated Spurs has already set the stage for their promotion. Zwane, speaking in the wake of City's successful campaign, expressed satisfaction not only with their achievement, but also with the working relationship shared between the two KwaZulu-Natal clubs. 'I've already congratulated coach Simo... They've done tremendously well,' Zwane said. 'We've played a lot of practice matches with them, and we've helped each other throughout the season in terms of preparation.' Video Player is loading. 'We are very happy for them, we're happy for the province, and we will see where this relationship with them goes.' AmaZulu's connection to the newly promoted side runs deeper than practice matches. Three of Zwane's players – goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela, defender Siyanda Hlangabeza and striker Senzo Ndlovu – spent the season on loan at City, and played a part in the club's championship success. The strong ties between the two outfits reflect a collaborative spirit in the province, particularly at a time when KwaZulu-Natal looks to maintain its representation in the top tier. With Richards Bay already confirmed and Golden Arrows nearby, and with AmaZulu safe as well, City's pending promotion means the province could once again boast four clubs in the Premiership next season. That would soften the blow of losing Royal AM, whose expulsion from the league earlier this campaign left a gap in the regional football landscape. The moments that define champions🏆 One strike from Gamildien. One goal that won us the league. This is history. This is Durban City. Our City, Our Team — Durban City FC (@DurbanCity_FC) May 20, 2025

Arthur Zwane grateful for AmaZulu opportunity after challenging Kaizer Chiefs tenure
Arthur Zwane AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane in the thick of things in training with his squad in Polokwane. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Arthur Zwane has been handed a fresh opportunity to solidify his place in South African football's coaching elite – and he's not taking it for granted. AmaZulu confirmed this month that the 51-year-old mentor will continue at the helm next season after arriving in October 2024 under challenging circumstances. Zwane, who previously coached Kaizer Chiefs, is now steering Usuthu towards a top-eight finish in the Premiership. His coaching career seemed in limbo following a dramatic exit at Chiefs. After being promoted to head coach two seasons ago, things spiralled out of control, with fan unrest culminating in missiles being hurled at him during matches. Zwane was removed at the end of that campaign despite a fifth-place finish and redeployed to the club's development structures. But Usuthu saw something others may have overlooked. Zwane arrived in Durban alongside Vusumuzi Vilakazi after Pablo Franco Martin was sacked early in the season. The two initially served as co-coaches, enduring a rocky start that included losses to Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout and Orlando Pirates in the league. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Momentum picked up with a 2-0 win over Chippa United – their first under the new duo. Then came another twist. Vilakazi resigned in February, leaving Zwane solely in charge. Since taking over full responsibility, he has led AmaZulu in nine matches, winning three, drawing two and losing four. Now, with his future confirmed, Zwane has broken his silence on what the opportunity means to him. 'I'd like to thank the management of AmaZulu and the president in particular for giving me a lifeline for me to revive my career,' he said. 'It's all up to me now to ensure that I take it to another level not because I want to prove a point to other people... I'm not here to prove points but rather to do my job. 'I chose to be a coach, and now I have to behave like a coach and give my best wherever I go.' The club, known for backing emerging coaches, has embraced Zwane's philosophy and allowed him to gradually implement his style. 'Ever since we took over with Coach Kanu, we had a long-term plan, even though we knew it would be dependent on results,' he added. 'We want to thank the president for the chance to stay longer and showcase our talents as coaches. 'AmaZulu is a club that gives so-called inexperienced coaches a chance, and this time, it has worked wonders – but it's also had its challenges. 'We embrace the opportunity, and the fact that it's a project means we have time to implement our way of doing things.' Zwane's first full season in charge will begin after Saturday's clash against Orlando Pirates – one of his former clubs – at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (3pm kick-off). A top-eight finish would be the perfect way to cap a season that began in turmoil, but could end in redemption.
