Red Bull requests FIA superlicence exemption for F1 junior
While Red Bull Racing's reserve drivers and junior talents are currently in the spotlights due to Max Verstappen's eleven penalty points, it has emerged that Red Bull submitted a request for a superlicence exemption for Formula 2 racer Arvid Lindblad. According to information obtained by Red Bull's request will be discussed next week during the upcoming FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau. Advertisement It's important to note, however, that this request is not directly related to Verstappen's penalty situation and was submitted well before the Dutchman's tally of penalty points hit 11, as Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko clarified. Lindblad is currently competing in Formula 2 and meets all other requirements for a superlicence – the document required to take part in official F1 sessions. He has accumulated enough superlicence points in junior formulas, although drivers can formally receive it only once they turn 18. This rule was introduced following Max Verstappen's remarkably early F1 debut at the age of 17, when he didn't yet have a driving licence. To prevent similar situations, the FIA implemented a minimum age as part of the superlicence system, which aspiring F1 drivers must now meet. Following in Antonelli's footsteps? Last year, however, the door was slightly reopened for talents under 18, when Mercedes requested an exemption for Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The process of permitting the Italian to test its F1 machinery was similar to the steps Red Bull is taking now. Appendix L, which now states: "At the sole discretion of the FIA, a driver judged to have recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition may be granted a superlicence at the age of 17 years old." Since Lindblad has already earned enough points before his 18th birthday and currently sits third in the Formula 2 standings as a rookie – with two race wins, including the feature race in Barcelona – he appears to qualify under this clause. The FIA will discuss Red Bull's request next week, when it is on the agenda for the meeting in Macau. If approved, Lindblad would be allowed to participate in F1 practice sessions and could even serve as a stand-in for one of the regular drivers. This could offer Red Bull an extra option given its current situation as Verstappen is teetering on the edge of a one-race ban from the series. If the Dutchman receives a suspension and Red Bull decides to promote one of the Racing Bulls drivers, Lindblad could theoretically replace either Isack Hadjar or Liam Lawson at the sister team. Advertisement In addition to Lindblad (if the FIA grants the exemption), Red Bull still has Ayumu Iwasa available as a reserve driver. Premier League side risk ruining pitch as stars race RED BULL F1 CAR in their stadium
LEEDS have only just booked their return to the Premier League. But they have already risked ruining their pitch... as players raced against a Formula One car at Elland Road. 4 4 Leeds are sponsored by Red Bull, whose sporting ventures also include the F1 team. And in an unlikely collaboration, club chiefs allowed the RB7 motor on the playing surface to compete in a drag race against three of Leeds' fastest stars. The idea came about at last year's British Grand Prix at Silverstone - with the players thinking they had a chance of beating the mega engine with a few obstacles. So Willy Gnonto, Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt took on F2 driver Arvid Lindblad in the unique challenge. The footballers and racing car started on the edge of the penalty box and had to go around mannequins on the 18-yard line at the other end of the pitch and come back to the starting point to finish. Lindblad suffered a nightmare start as he struggled to get the wheels going on the grass. The four involved were pretty much dead level approaching the mannequins. And the car's turning circle meant the footballers regained their lead going into the second half of the race. But as they began to tire - or tyre - the car closed the gap and eventually roared past to win by about 30 yards. F1 fan Largie Ramazani said of the publicity stunt: 'This was a great experience, the only thing better would be getting in the car. Inside Leeds stars' wild title celebrations as Bamford and Ampadu 'leave Burnley fanbase in meltdown' with karaoke song 'Before the race I was scared, but I was confident too. I think we did great, but in the end the car was just too quick. "Dan James was involved in the idea but unfortunately he's been injured. "But I'd back my team-mate over that car any day - DJ would smoke this car." Driver Lindblad added: "Ahead of the race I was a bit nervous. "I'd never driven on grass and had no idea how it would go. "The car has a ton of horsepower and there is not much grip on grass, so I wasn't sure if I could go full throttle and turn the car properly." The spectacle also featured a slalom 'dribbling' challenge - and it was no wonder the car left tyre marks across the pitch. No doubt the groundstaff were not best pleased... although the pitch will likely be ripped up and replaced for the Premier League campaign after winning the 2024-25 Championship under Daniel Farke. 4 4

Leeds can't win every race...
Leeds United may have won the Championship and secured a place in the Premier League but it turns out there's at least one race their players couldn't come out on top of the club's fastest players - Willy Gnonto, Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt - took on the challenge of sprinting against a Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car, steered by F2 driver Arvid flying footballers initially looked like they may have too much in the tank for the machine in a race which went from penalty box to penalty box and back on the Elland Road car easily won the day, taking control as all parties raced back to their starting penalty said: "The only thing better would be getting in the car. I love F1. I went to the Monaco Grand Prix last week, which was a bucket list moment for me. I used to play F1 games on the console when I was younger, so it was surreal to be next to a real car and race against it."In May of 2024, Red Bull secured a minority ownership stake in Leeds United, and took over as their front-of-shirt sponsor.

Former F1 driver 'wouldn't be surprised' if Liam Lawson is dropped
New Zealand F1 driver Liam Lawson. Photo: AFP Former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes Liam Lawson may not see out the season. Colombian Montoya, who drove in F1 between 2001 and 2006, said he "wouldn't be surprised" if the young Kiwi was dropped by Racing Bulls. Montoya is a seven time grand prix winner. He feels British-Swedish driver Arvid Lindblad is waiting to take Lawson's seat if he doesn't improve. In 2025 Lawson's best results are 12th in China and Saudi Arabia, while he's had two DNF's. "If Liam doesn't improve any further, I wouldn't be surprised if they [Racing Bulls] put Lindblad in at some point," Montoya told AS. "Not at all. I wouldn't be a little surprised." "If he [Lawson] doesn't recover soon, I'm sure Red Bull will start looking elsewhere because that's how they work," Montoya said. Lindblad won the 2025 Castrol Regional Formula NZ Championship and has been touted as a F1 driver of the future. Lawson's team-mate Isack Hadjar has generally out driven him since the New Zealander returned to Racing Bulls from Red Bull. Last week Argentine Franco Colapinto replaced Australian Jack Doohan at Alpine. Round seven of the F1 championship is at Imola this weekend. -RNZ
