4 Ontario men wanted in Alberta on allegations of taxi fraud

Arrest warrants have been issued in Alberta for four Ontario men accused of 18 incidents of taxi fraud that allegedly defrauded 16 victims of more than $28,000. Calgary police said they received 19 complaints between July 9 and July 14, 2024, about the alleged offences that appeared to have been committed by an organized group of individuals. The group is accused of using two methods to defraud the victims. In the first, one of the suspects would approach strangers asking for help paying a taxi fare with a debit or credit card, because the driver wouldn't accept cash. The victim would use their card to pay and the suspect would pay them back with cash. In the second method, a suspect driver, who did not have a taxi licence, would accept fares as a normal cab driver would, but they would use a skimming device to steal the victim's personal identification number (PIN). Police say the suspects used two methods in the scam. In the first, the perpetrators took on riders like any other licensed taxi, and ferried them to their destinations. In the second, a suspect allegedly approached victims claiming they were struggling to pay a taxi fare that would not accept cash. A fare would total between $7 and $7.50, and the suspect would ask a victim if they'd be willing to accept a $10 bill in exchange for paying with their personal debit or credit card. In both the classic cab scenario and the more complex con, drivers would claim that the tap function on the machine presented was also not functioning, forcing passengers and Good Samaritans alike to insert cards and press PIN codes. Investigators believe that information would then be captured by the suspects on a skimming device, or the card would be swapped out for a fake one entirely. The card would then be used to withdraw cash or purchase pre-paid credit cards, or gift cards. Charges for the four include varying counts of theft of a credit card, and counts of fraud under $5,000. Similar events were found to have occurred in Edmonton, Toronto, and Vancouver. Calgary police specified that the individuals charged were not licensed as taxi drivers in the City of Calgary. However, police say they 'have no way to know if they are licensed in other jurisdictions.' Investigators believe the vehicle was rented, with a model specifically chosen to blend in with other cab services. They say the perpetrators are believed to have 'placed a taxi sign on top, similar to ones you can buy online.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. CPS released a warning regarding scams of this nature in July, 2024, after receiving multiple reports of taxi fraud being conducted by what appeared to be an organized group. The warrant comes alongside a host of other scam warnings by the police. Recently, a Quebec Man was charged for defrauding a Calgary senior of more than $300,000 by convincing her to make deposits to bitcoin ATMs, none of which was able to be recovered. On June 18, police reported that since January they had received more than 30 reports of scammers posing as CPS officers, resulting in losses of more than $43,000. Suspects in the taxi fraud case are believed to have fled back to Ontario, which investigators believe to be where they reside. Photographs of the suspects can be found on the City of Calgary website. Police urge anyone with information about this as well as victims of fraud or identity theft, to call the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers. Bhaderwah (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 4 (ANI): The Department of Agriculture, Doda, organised a comprehensive farmer awareness programme at Bhalara Bhaderwah as part of the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan 2025, where around 200 participating farmers discussed the latest technologies and different Agricultural schemes. The Director of Agriculture, Jammu, Arvinder Singh, was the chief guest on the occasion. This was organised in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to revitalise the agriculture sector. The initiative aims to empower farmers with knowledge, technology, and resources to boost productivity, ensure sustainable practices, and increase income. He said, 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is not just a campaign but a mission to ensure the transformation of Indian agriculture through scientific interventions, smart resource utilisation, and access to direct benefits.' He urged farmers to proactively engage with the departments, adopt sustainable practices, and take advantage of the numerous schemes and subsidies made available under the leadership of the Prime Minister. Arvinder Singh added that 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan 2025 is an opportunity for farmers to directly interact with field experts and scientists to resolve their issues and upgrade their practices. He encouraged farmers to adopt organic and climate-resilient agriculture while taking full advantage of government-supported initiatives for irrigation, seeds, fertilisers, and crop insurance. Scientists of Krishi Vighyan Kendra Doda provided detailed information on natural farming, integrated pest management, new varieties, soil health management, crop diversification, direct-seeded rice cultivation, summer ploughing, and government schemes. Gujarat Titans Continue To Champion Sustainability At World's Largest Cricket Stadium During IPL 2025

Continuing their unwavering commitment to sustainability, the Gujarat Titans have shown excellence in managing waste from the world's largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium, for the third consecutive year. The Gujarat franchise have collected and processed an impressive 93,385 kilograms of waste in the seven home matches of the IPL 2025 season. This adds on to the Titans' holistic efforts in maintaining a sustainability-first approach across and beyond the IPL. Gujarat Titans started this initiative in 2023 aligning with their larger goal of sustainability, and ever since, thousands of kilograms of waste have been collected, processed and repurposed through their concentrated all-round efforts. In the 2024 season, the initiative resulted in a total of 1,04,777 kilograms of waste being efficiently processed through recycling, composting, upcycling, reuse, or donation across the Titans' home fixtures. With a capacity exceeding 100,000 spectators, the Narendra Modi Stadium presents a unique opportunity and responsibility for scaling sustainable practices. Gujarat Titans are harnessing this platform to execute a comprehensive, end-to-end waste management program that ensures environmental impact is minimised without compromising the fan experience. The current season's waste collection includes 83,761 kilograms of dry waste and 9,624 kilograms of wet waste, all of which are being processed using decentralised sorting, recycling, and composting systems. Excess food and materials are directed to donation channels, contributing to both environmental and social impact. Gujarat Titans' partnership with NEPRA Resource Management Pvt. Ltd. (NEPRA), enables them to manage the entire waste lifecycle from on-ground collection and segregation to transportation and final processing. The collective efforts also cater to stadium-wide sensitization campaigns, and ensuring hygiene and waste practices among food stall operators. Visual communication via banners, posters, and bin signage enhances public awareness, supported by social media outreach amplifying the initiative's goals. Colonel Arvinder Singh, Chief Operating Officer, Gujarat Titans emphasized the team's vision and said, "At Gujarat Titans, it is our endeavour to do our part to contribute towards a cleaner, greener future. With the help of our partners, we're able to turn waste into resources from each of our home games at the Narendra Modi Stadium. We're proud that our fans extend their consistent support to this initiative and continue to embrace and drive this mission forward." This campaign has not only transformed how waste is managed at scale but has also empowered local waste workers, including many women, thus contributing to both environmental sustainability and social equity through a circular economy framework. As the IPL 2025 progresses, the Gujarat Titans remain committed to making meaningful change leading by example on and off the field. Listen to the latest songs, only on
