According to a press release, the visit underscores ACWA Power's commitment to replicate the scale and ambition of its flagship NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia for Sarawak. Currently under development, NEOM is the world's largest green hydrogen project, targeting 4GW of renewable power to produce 600 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. The US$8.4 billion initiative aims to position Saudi Arabia as a global leader in the hydrogen economy ― a vision aligned with Sarawak's clean energy vision. The collaboration is also part of ACWA Power's US$10 billion investment commitment to Malaysia, announced during the Asean-GCC Summit in May this year, with Sarawak expected to benefit from infrastructure, technology transfer, and economic spillovers. In Sarawak, ACWA Power and SEDCE are jointly exploring the development of a green hydrogen facility powered by up to 4GW of captive renewable energy, delivering 2GW of electrolyser capacity for both export and domestic decarbonisation. The companies formalised the basis of this collaboration through an agreement signed last year. Both parties are also in discussions with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to explore floating solar projects in Batang Ai and Murum hydroelectric dams, and with the State Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications and the State Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability to ensure regulatory alignment. The cooperation supports Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (HETR), while strengthening clean energy ties between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. Also present at the meeting were Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, general manager Datu Abdul Hadi, chief investment officer Haji Zainnurain Othman, SEDCE CEO Dennis Harun Wong, ACWA Power senior advisor to the chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, country director Mathew Chandapillai, executive vice-president of business development (Middle East/Global Water) Udyan Seth, director of business development and projects Azhari Sulaiman, and Advisor to Chairman ACWA Power Co Dato JIV Sammanathan. Anwar: ACWA Power investment to boost Malaysia's green energy drive

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed Saudi Arabian firm ACWA Power's decision to choose Malaysia as its main hub in Southeast Asia. Anwar, in a post on Facebook, said the global leader in renewable energy and green hydrogen is expected to collaborate with local partners to spearhead major energy projects. "This is another positive development resulting from the close Malaysia-Saudi Arabia cooperation, particularly following my meeting with the founder of ACWA Power during the Asean-GCC Summit (in May). "This investment recognises Malaysia's energy transition policy, creates high-skilled job opportunities, and drives technology transfer," he said. Anwar added that ACWA Power is now forging a strategic partnership with Tenaga Nasional Bhd, UEM Lestra and Terengganu Inc. to develop renewable energy, hydrogen and combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) projects, in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). This commitment, he said, further strengthens Malaysia's position as a key player in sustainable energy in the region and supports efforts towards a low-carbon economy.

Malaysia, Asean to propose reforming UN veto power of five countries

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, together with Asean member states, is proposing reforms to the veto power held by the five permanent members (P5) of the United Nations Security Council, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister said although resolutions relating to the Gaza issue were passed with majority support in the UN General Assembly, their implementation was often delayed due to the use of veto power by the permanent members of the UN Security Council, consisting of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. "Unfortunately, this veto power was used even though the resolution was unanimously approved at the UN General Assembly. "That is why we are proposing that this veto power be overhauled and changed. This is what we are doing," he said during Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 21) in response to a supplementary question by Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) on Wisma Putra's further actions following the resolution of the Asean-GCC Summit which touched on the atrocities of the Zionist regime. Explaining further, he said the recent Asean-GCC Summit marked the success of Malaysian diplomacy in which a joint statement was issued on the Gaza issue for the first time. "Previously, it was difficult to get a joint statement among Asean countries. But now we have succeeded in doing so, including holding a joint conference with Japan and Korea to discuss the issue of the people of Gaza," he said. He said Malaysia is now actively strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries to voice its stance on the Gaza issue consistently at the international level. – Bernama

Efficiency, teamwork contributed to successful hosting of 46th Asean Summit, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: The outstanding efficiency, unwavering dedication, and seamless teamwork demonstrated by all parties involved were the main factors in Malaysia's success as the host of the 46th Asean Summit recently, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said everything went smoothly as a result of the extraordinary commitment from the government machinery, including the people who understood Malaysia's needs in organising the summit. "I saw at all levels, our children, civil servants, all of them were great. From the airport, the parade, the police, Immigration, MAHB (Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd), the management at the hotels, the Foreign Ministry, which coordinated, to the Prime Minister's Department, which managed the protocol. "I am also clueless about protocol, but I respect what the officers instructed the prime minister to do. I did as told (protocol), why? Because we are a country that has rules and works as a team," he said in his address at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly here Thursday (May 29). It was also attended by both Deputy Prime Ministers, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. The 46th Asean Summit concluded on May 27 after a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and strategic partnerships. During the two-day summit, Asean leaders participated in several important meetings, including the 2nd Asean-GCC Summit, the first Asean-GCC-China Summit, and the 16th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand (IMT-GT) Growth Triangle Summit. Anwar also touched on cooperation between Asean leaders in making collective decisions without compromising the interests of their respective countries. "… then we have to decide on an understanding in dealing with President Trump's (US President Donald Trump's) tariffs. Each country has its own strategy, which will involve bilateral relations. But we also want to protect the interests of the more than 650 million population of Asean countries. "… there is not a decision by Malaysia that is detrimental to another country, or by Vietnam (for example) that is detrimental to another country. We work as a team," he said. Malaysia, as the Asean chair 2025 with the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability", hosted the 46th Asean Summit, marking the fifth time the country has held the chairmanship after 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. - Bernama

Little treats: Gusmao (left) giving sweets to members of the media assembled at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. — AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: Media personnel covering the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit here were treated to an unexpected moment of warmth from Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao. Leaders from Asean and GCC member states were attending the summit and journalists were waiting for a chance of doorstop interviews when the meeting concluded. At the end of the two-hour meeting, the leaders proceeded for lunch. That's when Gusmao did something unexpected. With a broad smile, he approached the waiting media and offered them candies. 'Take it, you've waited so long,' he said. The thoughtful gesture sparked smiles and appreciative laughter from the weary media practitioners, many of whom had not anticipated such a personal moment amid formalities. The Asean-GCC Summit, held in conjunction with the 46th Asean Summit, was aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and regional relations between Asean and Gulf countries.
