How Netflix's new deal with Duke and Duchess of Sussex is 'different' from the previous one; yet Meghan Markle says: ‘We're proud to…'
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have signed a new, less lucrative deal with Netflix. The royal couple's new deal has transitioned from an exclusive content arrangement to a "first-look" deal. This new agreement gives the US streaming giant the first option to accept or decline new projects from the couple's production company, Archewell Productions, before other companies can bid. The previous deal, signed in 2020, provided the couple with a significant investment for exclusive content. The shift to a less-binding arrangement suggests the initial high-profile agreement may not have met Netflix 's expectations. However, this new deal also allows the Duke and Duchess of Sussex more flexibility to work with other platforms. 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand,' Markle said in a release. Why Netflix changed its previous deal's terms with Harry and Meghan According to a report by the New York Times, Archewell's original deal aimed to produce a wide range of content, including children's TV, feature films, and scripted shows, but so far it has focused only on documentaries and docuseries. Its biggest hit, Harry & Meghan (2022), drew 23.4 million views in four days, the most ever for a Netflix documentary. Other projects — Heart of Invictus, Live to Lead, and Polo — saw smaller audiences. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like After Losing Weight Kevin James Looks Like A Model 33 Bridges Undo In March, Meghan launched With Love, Meghan, a cooking, gardening, and hosting series that received mixed reviews but surpassed viewership for other cooking shows with 5.3 million views. The show also marked Netflix's first direct partnership with a talent's consumer brand, promoting Meghan's 'As Ever' line of products like $28 honey and $14 apricot spread, with Netflix co-producing some items and sharing in sales revenue. However, in a statement to the NYT, Bela Bajaria, Netflix's chief content officer, said: 'The response to their work speaks for itself. Fans have been inspired by 'With Love, Meghan', with products from the new 'As ever' line consistently selling out in record time.' Netflix has shifted away from broad, multi-year talent deals and now favours selective partnerships, the report adds. While some earlier signings like Shonda Rhimes and Adam Sandler thrived, others underperformed. Higher Ground, Barack and Michelle Obama's company, moved from a complete overhead deal to a first-look agreement after producing hits like American Factory and Leave the World Behind. Meanwhile, relations with Archewell may have reportedly faced challenges, including Netflix learning about Prince Harry's memoir Spare shortly before releasing the Harry & Meghan docuseries, which covered similar topics — though both sides deny tension. Archewell's output has primarily centred on the couple, with few other projects advancing. Its family series Pearl was cancelled, a film project based on Let's Meet at the Lake remains in early stages, and a new short, Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, was just announced. Meghan Markle's exclusive $100M Netflix deal is done — but ‘more TV projects are coming soon' from her and Prince Harry
Meghan Markle has halted her 'Confessions of a Female Founder' podcast — as her multi-million dollar Netflix deal with Prince Harry comes to its end, multiple sources tell Page Six. As Page Six exclusively revealed earlier this month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are poised to sign a first-look deal with the streamer when their exclusive deal ends later this year. They are set to follow in the footsteps of former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, whose production company Higher Ground now has a similar deal with Netflix. A source told us, 'There are more TV projects coming soon with both the duke and duchess.' Markle, 43, meanwhile, will return with a second season of her mocked lifestyle show, 'With Love, Meghan,' in September, which was filmed at the same time as her first season. Rumors about the status of the Sussexes' Netflix deal only ramped up when the streamer announced last week that 'With Love, Meghan' was at No. 383 in its semi-annual report, 'What We Watched,' with a total of 5.3 million views since its March 4 debut. Despite this, an insider pointed out that 'With Love, Meghan' was actually in the top 5 percent of Netflix shows — ranking 383 out of 7500 — and had outperformed other leading 'lifestyle' shows such as 'The Great British Baking Show,' two seasons of 'Chef's Table' and Season 9 of 'Queer Eye.' Industry sources had already told Page Six that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos remains a huge fan of Harry and Markle and regularly dines with them. Markle, according to friends, wants to continue to focus on her lifestyle range, As ever, after recently selling out her rosé wine. She has a champagne range coming out and there will be holiday products. 'As a growing business, As ever is continuing to explore growth opportunities that feel aligned with the brand's core values and quality standards,' said a source. 'The brand continues to evolve with new products that align with her vision for quality lifestyle goods at accessible price points.' Markle first touted that she was pausing her female founder podcast to focus on her business last month while speaking on Skims' co-founder Emma Grede's 'Aspire' podcast. 'What an amazing opportunity, to pull back the curtain and let people see what's happening at the start,' she said, 'to have the opportunity to talk to so many female founders who've been on that full trajectory, that are on the other side of success. To be able to be really candid and vulnerable personally about my learns and stumbles along the way. 'And to then take everyone's advice, and mine included, and to say 'I love that there's so much excitement and desire for another season, but I need to focus on my business,'' she continued. There is also change at Lemonada Media, which produced Markle's podcast, as it has been bought by Swedish company PodX. Alongside As ever, Markle source say she is focusing on raising her children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4. S he is also investing in female-led companies she feels 'passionate' about, including Midi Health, the fastest growing virtual care clinic focused on women navigating midlife hormonal change, as well as oat milk latte business Clevr. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry launch 'calculated bid for relevance' with fresh 'strategy'
As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announce their new 'multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects' with Netflix, an expert has revealed what this really means for the royal couple Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have signed a new Netflix deal for "film and television projects" in their next brand move. While this deal is said to be worth less than their first with the streaming platform, a royal expert revealed that it signals a "strategic reset", with their focus on "relevance". After weeks of speculation about their future with Netflix, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their new "multi-year, first look" deal with the streaming platform earlier this week. Meghan, who has a partnership with Netflix for her As Ever brand, shared: "We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand. "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision." It comes after Meghan Markle's birthday 'gimmick' is quietly shelved after major mistake. Their new "first look" deal with Netflix means that the streaming giant has the first say on any new film or television project of theirs before anyone else. While this is thought to give Harry and Meghan more choice, they will have less investment with Netflix compared to their deal in 2020, which is thought to be worth more than 100 million dollars (£74 million). But there could be a key reason behind their new Netflix deal. PR expert and Celebrity Manager, Mayah Riaz, exclusively told the Mirror: "This deal for Harry and Meghan signals a strategic reset rather than a retreat. While some might frame it as a "climbdown" from their initial mega-deal, I see it as a calculated move to recalibrate their brand narrative. "Their first Netflix contract was all about shock factor and global curiosity, but now, the focus appears to be sustainability and relevance." On their new deal and what this means for the royal couple, Mayah ( explained: "If the reported figures are accurate (rumoured to be worth around $100m), this new deal is likely smaller than their previous multi-million-dollar agreement. But this isn't necessarily a downgrade as it could reflect a shift towards more targeted projects, lower risk for Netflix, and potentially give more creative control for Harry and Meghan." During their first deal with Netflix, they released their controversial docuseries, 'Harry and Meghan', where they were highly critical of the Royal Family. Despite this, it became one of the most-watched Netflix documentaries of all time with 23.4 million views. Other projects included Harry's series on Polo, which failed to attract the same number of viewers. Then there was Meghan's cookery and lifestyle show, 'With Love, Meghan', which was released in March but received backlash from numerous critics. When it comes to their latest Netflix deal, all eyes will be on them and what they create next. Sharing her thoughts on this, PR expert Mayah said: "The challenge will be avoiding the "fallen from grace" narrative and instead showing it as an evolution, where they move from sensational exclusives to credible, long-term content creation. If they get this right, it could really strengthen their reputation in both Hollywood and philanthropic circles."

Meghan-Prince Harry's Archewell Productions signs new ‘first look deal' with Netflix — What it means, what changes
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's production company, Archewell Productions, signed a new deal with streaming giant Netflix at the heels of expiring contract in September. This new extended contract comes with a multi-year, first look deal for all its film and television projects. In a statement, the 44-year old Suits actress stated, 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand,' Newsweek reported. The Duchess of Sussex added, 'My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.' Worth less for the royals than their last agreement with the OTT platform, this new deal offers Netflix first rights to say yes or no to any television project new film or before anyone else. At the same time, this arrangement grants the Sussex more options on less investment and stake from Netflix. This is in contrast to the high-profile 2020 deal where the OTT platform paid them for the exclusive rights to content from Archewell Productions. This announcement comes at a time Season 2 of With Love, Meghan is set to premiere later this month. Besides With Love, Meghan, Archewell Productions released a number of shows with the streaming service, including Polo, Live to Lead, Heart of Invictus and Harry & Meghan. The filming of the second season completed in early March, Netflix said. The Season 2 of 'With Love, Meghan' promises new "fun and heartwarming new season" with celebrity chefs, talented artists, and beloved friends for hands-on adventures filled with laughter and discovery," the streaming service said. "From playful cooking challenges to DIY projects, Meghan and her guests explore bold flavors, experiment with new techniques, and discover simple ways to add beauty to everyday life. It's all about embracing playfulness over perfection and finding joy in creating together," it added.
