Robotic hip replacement op at KGMU

Lucknow: Doctors at KGMU successfully performed two robot-assisted hip replacement surgeries, making it the first govt institution in UP to achieve this feat. Both patients received the surgery free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The first patient, 20-year-old Durgesh, a farmer from Lakhimpur Kheri, suffered from arthritis that severely damaged his hip, causing him intense pain and making it difficult to walk. After being advised to undergo hip replacement surgery by local doctors, he was referred to KGMU. In the orthopaedics department, he was admitted under the head of department, Prof Ashish Kumar, who opted for robotic surgery due to its precision and quicker recovery time. Similarly, 75-year-old Brahm Dev from Basti, also suffering from severe arthritis, underwent the robotic hip replacement. Given his advanced age, conventional surgery posed higher risks. Therefore, Prof Ashish and his team decided to perform the procedure using a robot. Prof Kumar explained that robotic surgery is an advanced global technique that uses 3D mapping of the bones to accurately place the implant. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The procedure was performed by a team from the orthopaedics department, including Prof Narendra, Prof Kumar Shantanu, Dr Sanjeev, Dr Devarshi, Dr Madhusudan and Dr Brijmohan. The anaesthesia team was led by Dr Dinesh Kaushal and Dr Neelkamal. VC Prof Soniya Nityanand said: "We are committed to providing modern and less painful surgical options to patients. Robotic surgery is being promoted actively."

KGMU performs partial knee replacement using microplasty technique

Lucknow: Doctors at KGMU's department of orthopaedics successfully performed a partial knee replacement using the microplasty technique—a significant shift from traditional total knee replacements. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The microplasty targets only the damaged portion of the knee, preserving healthy tissue and bone. Based on modern computer navigation, it allows for precise alignment and faster recovery with minimal cuts and reduced blood loss. The surgery was conducted by senior orthopaedic surgeon Prof Shailendra Singh on a 52-year-old woman from Sultanpur earlier this week. The patient was operated on under the Ayushman scheme of the govt. Prof Shailendra Singh said, "This is the future of knee surgery. Instead of replacing the entire joint, we now fix only the damaged part. Recovery is faster, pain is less, and the results are long-lasting." It will cost around Rs 80,000-Rs 90,000. He added that patients can often begin walking within 24 to 48 hours after surgery. "For carefully selected individuals, implants may last over 15 years, with many returning to regular physical activity or sports in a short time," he said. This technique is especially suited for individuals with localised medial compartment osteoarthritis, intact ligaments and stable joints—typically those who remain active even beyond the age of 40. The surgery involved a small incision of around 6-8 cm, guided instrumentation for accurate placement and the use of the Oxford Knee implant—a proven device developed by Oxford University in partnership with Zimmer Biomet. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The implant's hallmark is a mobile bearing design that mimics natural knee movement and allows most patients to begin walking within 24 to 48 hours. HoD orthopaedics department Prof Ashish Kumar said: "KGMU plans to expand the use of microplasty as a preferred treatment option in early-stage osteoarthritis, particularly among younger, active individuals. The university is also preparing to organise workshops and clinical sessions to train surgeons in this advancing technique." The surgery team included anaesthesiologists Prof Vineeta Singh and Prof Manoj Chaurasia, as well as orthopaedic colleagues Prof Ravindra Mohan, Dr Deepak Chawda and Dr Ankur Maan.

Citizens Reject New Cab Fare System, Turn to Cheaper Transport Options

Nagpur: The new fare system being implemented by app-based cab drivers has been strongly rejected by city commuters, many of whom are turning to alternative and more economical transport modes like auto-rickshaws, buses, and the Metro. As per the revised pricing structure, drivers are charging a whopping Rs100 for the first 3km and Rs25 per kilometre thereafter. The fare hike, which has not been officially notified by authorities, is being seen by passengers as exorbitant. Speaking to TOI, Kush Shah, a daily commuter from Pratap Nagar, recounted his experience: "The app showed me Rs150 to the railway station, but the driver demanded Rs200+, citing diversions and heavy traffic. I immediately cancelled the ride and took the Metro instead." Another commuter, Ashish Kumar, who was travelling with his elderly grandfather, had a similar complaint. "The driver refused to go to Nandanvan for less than Rs200. I ended up taking an auto from the main road, which was not only cheaper but also more courteous," he said. Drivers, too, are feeling the heat. Many say they are unable to convince customers to accept the higher fares. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Anne Hegerty And Her Partner, Who You Will Easily Recognize Sport Pirate Undo Bhushan Jachak, a city-based cab driver, told TOI, "Out of 10 rides I received today, 8 got cancelled once the customers heard the fare. People are just switching to buses and Metro rather than paying extra." Another driver added, "Only passengers in a hurry or those dealing with emergencies agree to these revised rates. Most others walk away or cancel the booking." Some drivers blame the app companies and local authorities for the confusion. "There has been no official fare notification issued by the government. Unless this is streamlined, the fare model is unsustainable," said a driver. Representing the drivers, Keshav Kshirsagar, president of the Maharashtra Workers' Union, said, "We are simply asking for implementation of government-notified rates. But despite multiple peaceful protests and follow-ups, neither the app companies nor the government have responded to our concerns." He further informed that a crucial meeting with RTO officials and app-based service providers is scheduled to take place in Mumbai. "If the talks fail to produce results, we will launch a state-wide chakka jam from Wednesday," he added. Meanwhile, commuters continue to voice frustration as everyday travel costs soar, leading many to re-evaluate their transport choices. Metro gains riders With cab services suspended, Nagpur Metro observed a significant boost in commuter numbers. Four out of seven days in the past week recorded ridership crossing the one lakh mark. The other two weekdays, July 17 and 19, saw ridership close to the one lakh mark, with 99,018 and 99,612 commuters respectively. Even on Sunday, July 20 — when ridership typically dips to just above 60,000 — the Metro recorded a strong turnout of 74,795. Officials termed the trend encouraging, especially since Fridays and Saturdays, which usually see a drop, maintained high usage levels. The surge indicates a shift in commuter preference towards the Metro as a dependable and affordable alternative amid the ongoing cab service disruption.

Wanted in 2015 robbery-murder case, man arrested from Greater Noida

A man accused in a 2015 robbery-murder case and on the run for several years was arrested from Greater Noida on Sunday, said police. Identified as Ashish Kumar (35), the accused allegedly killed a businessman and looted Rs 7 lakh from him at Maurya Enclave in 2015, said officers. He was declared a proclaimed offender after he failed to surrender in 2022 after getting an interim bail in 2020, which was extended due to the pandemic. The case was lodged at the Maurya Enclave police station under multiple Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including those for murder, robbery, and criminal conspiracy, as well as under provisions of the Arms Act, said police. According to the police, inputs were received in the early hours of Sunday about the accused working at a mobile plant in Greater Noida. The police set a trap and arrested him. 'He was still pursuing his undergraduate studies when his friend Amit, already involved in criminal activity, persuaded him to join a plan to rob a businessman in Maurya Enclave, Delhi. Shahbad, another associate of Amit, and Ashish robbed Rs 7 Lakh from the victim. When the victim resisted, they murdered him,' DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said.
