Centre green-lights semiconductor facility expansion in Mohali

Mohali: The Union cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved four new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), including the expansion of an existing facility in Mohali. With six projects already under way, these new approvals — SiCSem, Continental Device India Pvt Ltd (CDIL), 3D Glass Solutions Inc., and Advanced System in Package (ASIP) technologies — will bring cumulative investments of Rs 4,600 crore and create more than 2,000 skilled jobs. This takes the total approved projects under ISM to 10, with investments of Rs 1.60 lakh crore across six states. In Mohali, CDIL will expand its discrete semiconductor manufacturing facility to produce high-power devices such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky Barrier Diodes, and transistors using silicon and silicon carbide technologies. The upgraded plant will have an annual capacity of 158.38 million units, serving sectors like automotive electronics (including EVs), renewable energy, power conversion, industrial applications, and communication infrastructure. "The Punjab unit of BJP thanked the PM for approving the expansion of a discrete semiconductor manufacturing facility in Mohali," Ashwani Sharma, party's working president, said in a press release. Another BJP leader from Mohali, Vineet Joshi, said this will provide a boost to the economy in Mohali and open up employment opportunities. Withdrawal of land pooling policy victory of farmers, labourers: Punjab BJP

In the face of mounting pressure from farmer bodies and opposition parties, the Punjab government on Monday withdrew its land pooling policy, which it had once termed 'farmer-friendly'. He said his party took a clear stand against this scheme from day one that it would not allow acquisition of even an inch of farmers' land. Chandigarh, Aug 12 (PTI) Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Tuesday said the withdrawal of the land pooling policy by the AAP government is a big victory for farmers and labourers, and that his party's protests put pressure on the state government. The Punjab BJP on Tuesday held celebrations over the rolling back of the policy. 'Punjab and Punjabiyat have won. It is a big victory of farmers and labourers,' Sharma told reporters here. From day one, when the policy was released, the BJP took a clear stand that it would not let the AAP government acquire even an inch of land, he said. He further accused AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain of 'looting' Punjab. 'Today, everybody knows Punjab is not run by Punjabis,' he said, claiming that AAP leaders sitting in Delhi call the shots. 'They (Delhi-based AAP leaders) brought the land pooling policy to loot Punjab,' the BJP leader charged. 'The BJP held protests at tehsil, block and district levels against the policy. We were to hold a protest, 'Zameen Bachao, Kisan Bachao' in Patiala on August 17. All these things put pressure on the state government,' Sharma said. He demanded that the state government issue a notification about scrapping of the policy. He said, 'Will Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann make a statement to ensure that not even a single inch of land of farmers will be acquired through any other way?' In a brief statement issued on Monday evening, the principal secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development said, 'The government hereby withdraws the land pooling policy dated May 14 and its subsequent amendments.' 'Consequently, all actions, like LOIs (letters of intent) issued, registration done, or any other action taken thereunder shall be reversed henceforth,' the statement said. The decision came days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court last week ordered an interim stay on the implementation of the policy for four weeks. In its August 7 order, the court held that the policy appears to have been notified in haste and concerns, including social impact assessment and environmental impact assessment, should have been addressed before its notification. In opposing land-pooling policy, Punjab BJP took the opportunity to mend fences with farmers

1 2 Chandigarh: Having faced massive backlash over the three controversial farm laws, which were eventually repealed by the BJP-led central govt, the Punjab BJP leadership saw an opportunity in the controversial land pooling policy of the AAP-led govt in Punjab to mend fences with farmers by opposing the policy tooth and nail. The anger against the BJP leaders over the three farm laws could be gauged from the fact that alleged activists of farm unions protested by chasing and tearing the clothes of then BJP MLA from Abohar, Arun Narang, in Malout town of Muktsar district in March 2021, around eight months before the Centre announced the repeal of the farm laws. In October 2020, the vehicle of Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma (who was Punjab BJP chief at that time) was attacked at a toll plaza in Hoshiarpur, where farmers were holding a protest. The anger against the BJP did not subside even after the laws were repealed, and BJP candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls continued to face protests, particularly in rural areas. The party failed to win a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and at the receiving end in rural areas were its candidates, such as famous singer Hans Raj Hans, (now a union minister of state) Ravneet Singh Bittu, and former IAS officer Parampal Kaur Sidhu, among others. It was no surprise then that the BJP saw the controversy over the land pooling policy as a platform to strike a chord with the farmers by opposing it tooth and nail, and an opportunity to find its feet in rural Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. After its over two-decades long alliance with the SAD broke over the farm laws in 2020, the BJP, predominantly a party with support base from urban areas, has been eyeing to make inroads into the rural areas as well. On August 6, the Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a state-wide yatra, "Save Land, Save Farmers," from August 17 to September 5 against the policy, under the leadership of its working president Ashwani Sharma. Punjab BJP announces ‘Save Land, Save Farmers' Yatra against land pooling policy from Aug 17 to Sep 5

Sharpening its attack on ruling AAP in Punjab against the proposed 'Land Pooling Scheme', the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday announced a state-wide yatra titled 'Save Land, Save Farmers', from August 17 to September 5. The drive will be led by party's state working president Ashwani Sharma. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, BJP's state vice president Kewal Singh Dhillon said that during this yatra, BJP Punjab will go village-to-village creating awareness among farmers against this scheme and mobilise them. It will meet the farmers who are already aware and struggling, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder, will support them. The yatra will kick off on August 17 from Patiala, and pass through villages in Malwa, Majha, and Doaba regions affected by the land pooling plan, culminating in Pathankot on September 5, he said. BJP leaders condemned the Bhagwant Mann government, saying it has launched a serious assault on the land of farmers. Through the land pooling scheme, the government seeks to hand over farmers' land to land mafias through backdoor means – which is completely unacceptable, they said. They stated, 'BJP stands like a rock with the farmers. Until the AAP government withdraws the land pooling policy, the BJP will continue to fight at all levels in solidarity with the farmers.' Meanwhile, BJP's state president Sunil Jakhar in a post on X wrote: 'The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted a stay on Punjab government's land pooling policy. Although this stay is currently limited to a single day, considering the government's authority of unsuccessful litigation regarding policies detrimental to the public interest, it is likely that this initiative to acquire farmers' land will not withstand legal scrutiny. Consequently, the government is poised to face defeat in this case as well. Therefore it would be prudent for the Chief Minister to relinquish the interests of Delhi and acknowledge the sentiments of Punjab by withdrawing this policy.'
