Giants send Hayden Birdsong to Triple-A Sacramento after failing to record an out in loss to Braves

ATLANTA (AP) — The San Francisco Giants optioned Hayden Birdsong to Triple-A Sacramento after the right-hander failed to record an out in Monday night's 9-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Birdsong (4-4) issued four walks, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch while allowing five runs against the Braves. He threw just six of his 25 pitches for strikes in the Giants' sixth straight loss. It was the first time in 37 career appearances Birdsong did not record an out. He has 17 walks in his last 13 innings. The loss left Birdsong's ERA at 4.80, including an 8.13 mark in his last seven starts. San Francisco also optioned right-hander Tristan Beck to Sacramento and recalled right-handers Carson Seymour and Sean Hjelle from the Triple-A team in moves announced by the team on Tuesday. Beck threw 1 1/3 perfect innings on Monday night, leaving his ERA at 5.68. ___ AP MLB:

Red Sox Predicted to Land 'Perfect Match' All-Star Ace After Tanner Houck Setback

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox suffered a tough loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, but they have reason for optimism headed into the trade deadline. The team rattled off an impressive win streak before hitting the All-Star break, then took a game from the juggernaut Chicago Cubs. Most recently, the Phillies needed extra innings and a catcher's interference fluke to defeat them, as starter Walker Buehler enjoyed an encouraging return to form. Now the Red Sox face a final chance to bolster their roster and prove that jettisoning Rafael Devers was indeed some addition by subtraction. And after starter Tanner Houck suffered an injury setback that could keep him out of the rotation for the rest of the year, it seems their biggest area of need will be a frontline ace, even if Buehler bounces back. "Whereas their offense has kept humming along even after the trade of Rafael Devers in June, the starting rotation just keeps getting thinner underneath staff ace Garrett Crochet," Zachary Rymer wrote for Bleacher Report. "Kutter Crawford and Hunter Dobbins are already done for the year, and the same may be true of Tanner Houck after his latest setback." (Photo by) More Kirkland/Getty And with the need clear, Rymer predicted the Red Sox would fill it by swinging a trade for Washington Nationals All-Star Mackenzie Gore. "As Gore is only 26 and controlled through 2027, the Nats might as well listen and see if anyone offers a boatload of talent that could help get their years-long rebuild back on the right track," Rymer added. "And if any team should indulge them, it's the Red Sox. ... To this end, Gore is a perfect match on paper." In his fourth big-league season, Gore has a 3.49 ERA and 140 strikeouts across 20 starts, making him perhaps the most intriguing starter held by any likely trade deadline seller. Virtually every contending team would be interested in reinforcing their rotation with Gore, so the Red Sox would likely need to part with at least one highly ranked prospect to get him. But with plenty of those on hand and a clear chance at a deep playoff run ahead, the Red Sox could very well be the trade landing spot for one of the National League's best pitchers. Anthony Volpe Responds to 'Frustrating' Error in Critical Yankees' Loss

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have seen Anthony Volpe continue to struggle offensively this season, but his defense has also taken a dive. The Yankees may not have expected Volpe to turn into a key offensive player over the course of one offseason. However, they likely did think they would be able to rely on the 2023 Gold Glove Award winner's defense. Through 99 games, he leads the American League in errors. He made his 12th error on Monday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Volpe fielded a routine ground ball but made a wide throw to Paul Goldschmidt, allowing a runner to score from second base, extending the Blue Jays' lead to 4-1. Volpe spoke on the error after the game, noting he "rushed the throw," according to The Athletic's Brendan Kuty. More Matthew Grimes Jr./"Anytime you get the ball hit to you, you expect it to be an out," Volpe told Kuty. "So, when that doesn't happen, it's frustrating." Volpe currently has a career-low fielding percentage. The Yankees once looked set to run away with the American League East, but now trail the Blue Jays by four games, entering play on Tuesday. Volpe is not the sole reason for the Yankees' struggles, but he is a big part. He plays a premium position defensively and has failed to come through offensively. He is slashing just .214/.286/.394. Even his career-high .680 OPS is below league average. More MLB: Dodgers-Red Sox Blockbuster Trade Idea Would Set Up Both Teams for Postseason

Phillies Boss Breaks Silence on Alec Bohm Trade Replacement

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies enjoyed a stunning walk-off win on Monday, courtesy of an extra-innings catcher's interference by the Boston Red Sox. The win helped the Phillies maintain their narrow hold on first place in the National League East division. But if they hope to hold onto that lead, they'll need some reinforcement at the trade deadline. Even after signing free agent reliever David Robertson, the Phillies seem most likely to target additional bullpen help as the priority. But it also seems likely they will explore some offensive upgrades, particularly after a harsh injury to third baseman Alec Bohm underscored questions about the bottom of the batting order. "Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm has a fractured left rib and was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday," according to The Associated Press. "Bohm is hitting .278 with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 92 games this season." (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) More Cox/Getty After an All-Star breakout gave way to a brutal slump and a benching in the playoffs last year, Bohm has been the center of trade speculation for the Phillies. And now that he's been ruled out for a crucial stretch of the season, fans might expect that speculation to manifest in a viable replacement. But, speaking out on seeking a trade replacement for Bohm, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski declared the injury hasn't changed his outlook. "Dombrowski said Bohm's injury doesn't change how he views the team's need for a bat, possibly because he already knew the Phils needed one," Todd Zolecki reported for Dombrowski could be counting on Bohm to return after a brief stint on the injured list, or he could feel confident that Otto Kemp is a serviceable replacement at the hot corner. But it seems most likely that with or without a healthy Bohm, the Phillies' front office has been scouring the market for an affordable offensive upgrade. More MLB: Emmanuel Clase Trade? Padres Named 'Best Fit' for Braves Slugger Marcell Ozuna at Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves are reportedly looking to move all of their expiring contracts at the trade deadline, including designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. As the Braves have all but fallen out of the playoff race, MLB insider Jeff Passan believes the Padres are one of the teams that should be pursuing Ozuna too boost their chances of a deep playoff run. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Marcell Ozuna #20 of the Atlanta Braves runs to third base at Sutter Health Park on July 09, 2025 in Sacramento, California. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Marcell Ozuna #20 of the Atlanta Braves runs to third base at Sutter Health Park on July 09, 2025 in Sacramento, California."Ozuna is a stone-cold DH, playing two games in the field in 2023 as his last regular-season experience defensively," wrote Passan. "Ozuna is also in a contract year, but his power numbers are down a notch from his standout .302 average and 39-homer performance last season. His on-base percentage remains among the highest of potential trade candidates. If anyone is moving from Atlanta, he's the likeliest candidate, with free agency beckoning." The Padres have struggled to find consistency this season at the DH spot, so Ozuna would slot into the lineup right away for San Diego. Entering Monday, Ozuna was hitting .235 with 13 home runs, 42 RBI and an OPS+ of 112 despite some recent struggles. "Best fits: San Diego, Seattle, Texas, Detroit, San Francisco," wrote Passan. General manager A.J. Preller has shown in the past that he'll do whatever it takes to make his team as strong as possible heading into the final two months of the regular season and playoffs. He's been creative about it in the past, and he will find new ways this year as well. One aspect that works in the Padres' favor is that Ozuna is a rental, so they will not have to send back as much to Atlanta as they would for a bat with even just an extra year of control. If Ozuna hits well for San Diego, Preller could look to re-sign him in the offseason. More MLB: Yankees' Pursuit of Third Baseman Eugenio Suarez Ramps Up Ahead of Deadline
