(Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) The next fight card on the UFC schedule is UFC Vegas 197, which takes place on Saturday, May 31, from UFC Apex in Las Vegas. In the main event, two of the top-ranked competitors in the UFC women's flyweight division meet in a pivotal matchup. In that contest, the No. 4 ranked Erin Blanchfield faces the No. 5 ranked Maycee Barber. EDMONTON, ALBERTA - NOVEMBER 02: (L-R) Erin Blanchfield punches Rose Namajunas in a flyweight fight ... (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Blanchfield (13-2) is the No. 4 fighter in the official UFC women's flyweight rankings. The 26-year-old Blanchfield was riding a nine-fight winning streak when she faced Manon Fiorot in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card in March 2024. Fiorot won that bout with ease, ringing up three 50-45 scores from the judges. The victory earned Fiorot a UFC 315 matchup against UFC women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, a bout Shevchenko won via decision. Blanchfield took a step back toward a title fight in November when she scored a decision win over former UFC women's strawweight champion Rose Namajunas. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Barber (14-2) is the No. 5 fighter in the UFC women's 125-pound division. She opened her UFC career with a 3-2 record, but is undefeated since dropping back-to-back decisions to Roxanne Modafferi and Alexa Grasso in 2020 and 2021. The 27-year-old Barber is riding a six-fight winning streak heading into UFC Vegas 107. Her most recent victory was a March 2024 decision win over Katlyn Cerminara. Barber was schedule to face Rose Namajunas in July 2024, but she dropped out of that fight due to illness. Barber later revealed she had Epstein-barr virus. In December she told Morning Kombat, "Everything's going great now. It has been a long journey. I was so bummed when – well, first of all, I was so excited to fight Rose because not only was I fighting Rose, but I was also fighting in Denver where I made my UFC debut. So for me, it was my first main event. "It was a very huge opportunity for me, and I was so excited and then I was devastated when I was told, 'Hey look, you're not going to fight on this card.' Obviously the health is more important. So I was very devastated, but I have made a lot of progress coming forward, and I can't wait to be back." (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) When the betting lines for Blanchfield and Barber opened, Blanchfield was listed as the -200 betting favorite over the +150 Barber. Today, Blanchfield is listed at -238, while Barber is the +203 betting underdog. Odds via BetOnline. More flyweight bout during the UFC Fight Night event at Boardwalk Hall Arena on March 30, 2024 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Blanchfield uses pressure and striking to get the fight to the mat. While her strikes are not all that powerful, Blanchfield is not a fighter who looks for knockouts. Instead, Blanchfield uses her high-output striking attack to put her opponents on the back foot and then look for takedowns. In her last outing, Blanchfield attempted eight takedowns while picking up nearly nine minutes of control time. Barber is a better technical striker than Blanchfield, and she has four knockout wins under the UFC banner. She lands at a good clip and has better striking accuracy than Blanchfield, but her takedown defense is worrisome, as Andrea Lee went five-for-five in takedowns against Barber in 2023. The betting pick for the UFC Vegas 107 main event is for Blanchfield to be very active with her wrestling and ground control to pick up the decision win over Barber. We will have more on UFC Vegas 107 as fight-night approaches.

US Coast Guard's Fleet Week demonstration in NYC nixed due to real offshore search mission on Memorial Day
This was not a drill. Members of US Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City nixed a Fleet Week search and rescue demonstration in Manhattan on Memorial Day for the real thing — more than 100 miles away. The Atlantic City unit, known as the 'Blackjacks,' were diverted to a distress call 20 miles off the Jersey shore on Monday after a radio transmission that sounded like 'Help' was transmitted just before noon, a US Coast Guard rep told The Post. 'Any sign that there could be potential distress, that's enough for us to launch [a search and rescue operation] and go search,' the rep said, adding that no other 'correlating' evidence, such as a missing person or missing boat, were reported. The investigation – which was conducted in the area of Barnegat Light, Atlantic City and Cape May in New Jersey, was called off just after 3 p.m., the rep added. Coast Guard Station Cape May also responded to the search. The Fleet Week demonstration, slated to start at 2 p.m., was set to involve a dummy doll being rescued in the water by a Coast Guard member dropping in from a helicopter. Some US Coast Guard members at Pier 86 — where the demonstration was planned to take place after the annual Memorial Day commemoration ceremony at the Intrepid Museum — told The Post they were unsurprised the diversion happened due to the popularity of marine-related activities over the holiday weekend. On Memorial Day weekend, there's 'more than a 50% chance that they are going to get diverted,' one Coast Guard member at the Pier 86 event said. 'A lot of people's boats have been up [out of the water] for the winter, and now they finally want to get out. Sometimes they don't take enough fuel, or forget to check the electronics: it could be a number of things.' An example of frequent calls to the Coast Guard during the busy holiday weekend are for disabled vessels – boats which could simply be adrift while passengers onboard are safe. Several people have been pulled from the water across the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend, but there haven't been any reports of missing persons, severe injuries or deaths as a result, according to a Coast Guard rep. Despite the unexpected absence at the Memorial Day celebration in Manhattan, plenty of other Coast Guard members filled booths outside the Intrepid Museum – including divers based in California and Hawaii. Diver Richard Rudek, 24, told The Post he assists in underwater maintenance operations – such as underwater construction, repairing buoys and other navigational tools – as well as search and recovery operations 'relatively frequently.' Rudek said his team went out to recover the wreckage of a 2024 helicopter crash in Kauai, Hawaii, which 'helped to provide closure to the families.' His favorite part of his job, however, remains underwater navigation projects – where 'you never know what you're going to get into.' 'Sometimes it's zero [visibility], you're in scuba [gear] and holding several thousand pound objects with, basically, balloons. Every job is super different,' he said. The Coast Guard's Atlantic Strike Team — which responds to fires, hurricanes, hazmat incidents and other emergencies from East Palestine's train derailment to the Los Angeles fires to the Baltimore Bridge collapse — was also in attendance at the fleet week event. 'Most Coasties join because they want to help,' said Lieutenant Connie Tobler. 'The best part [of the job] is search and rescue,' said Officer Bismarck Miranda, who recalled an operation a decade ago in which he rescued a 4-year-old and their family 50 miles off the shore of Key West. 'Being able to rescue that and see the baby and the family come back to the United States safely — that was probably the best feeling.'

What's the ocean temperature off Delaware on Memorial Day weekend?
It's finally Memorial Day weekend, and it's unofficially summer in Delaware. But, as the air temperatures continue to mostly climb, less can be said about the ocean temperatures. According to data from a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration observation station in Lewes, the current water temperature is 61.9 degrees. That's cold; some can handle more than others. Others will probably wait until July to dip their toes in. That's about where we should be. Data from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information shows that Lewes' average water temperature hovers around 60 degrees in May. June is the start of the rapid warm-up to an average of 68 degrees. In July, August and September, the temperatures will hover in the low to middle 70s on average. It's not a guarantee that temperatures will rise to this level consistently. Upwelling of cooler water under the surface can cause temperatures to drop unexpectedly. In July 2024, water temperatures fell into the 50s in Atlantic City because of wind-induced upwelling. DELAWARE BEACHES: All about the new Rehoboth Beach Patrol Headquarters on the boardwalk REHOBOTH BEACH BOARDWALK: Ryan's Beach Shop closes; Zelky's expanding Water temperatures lag behind air temperatures for a reason. Water has a higher specific heat capacity than air, meaning that water needs more heat for longer intervals than air to heat up and cool down. The difference is slight, but the air temperature in Lewes is highest on average in July while the water temperature peaks one month later. The cold water temperature and the cool air temperatures for this Memorial Day weekend could put some at risk for cold shock in hypothermia. The National Center for Cold Water Safety warns people to use caution in water below 70 degrees. If you jump in and have trouble breathing or become physically incapacitated by the cold, get helped out of the water and get dry and warm as quickly as possible. Be sure someone can monitor for decreasing body temperatures, which can happen when dry. HOLIDAY WEEKEND AT DELAWARE BEACHES: What to do and know The weather is supposed to be cool but dry, with temperatures at the Delaware beaches peaking in the low 70s under mostly sunny skies for the rest of the holiday weekend.
