Atletico Madrid agree terms with USMNT star
With Real Betis' season ending on Wednesday night, their transfer business is getting underway in earnest. One of the most likely exits is USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who has made an impact ever since arriving in Seville. Cardoso, 23, was signed from Internacional in Brazil in January of 2024, and more or less locked down a starting role immediately. Betis have already extended his contract, but last summer agreed a €25m sell clause with Tottenham Hotspur, in exchange for a reduction in price on Giovani Lo Celso. Priority target for Atletico Madrid Spurs are reportedly interested in Cardoso for next season, but require the green light from the player in order to make a move. Their issue is that Atletico Madrid have made him a priority target. Marca say that after the Conference League final, Atletico have now made formal contact, after both sides expressed an interest in a deal several weeks ago. Image via Joaquín Corchero / AFP7 / Europa Pres Their information is that Cardoso has given the green light for a deal, and there is a verbal agreement on personal terms for a contract that will run four or five seasons. Negotiation ahead with Real Betis Now Atletico must open talks with Betis. Cardoso has a contract until 2030 and a release clause of €80m, but their expectation is that they will be able to close a deal for a fee not too distant from the €25m that Spurs would have to pay. Betis do hold an interest in Rodrigo Riquelme, who could be a factor in negotiations, although Atletico are also attempting to include him in a deal for Villarreal's Alex Baena. Cardoso will not be available for Club World Cup While the hope at the Metropolitano is that they can close a deal for Baena in time for the World Cup, Cardoso would not be available. He is set to join up with the USMNT, as they prepare for the Gold Cup this summer, hence any deal they do strike will go through in July.

Julian Alvarez outlines stance on making shock Arsenal transfer this summer
Julian Alvarez has been a big hit at Atletico Madrid in his debut season with Arsenal and Liverpool now considering an approach, but the player has made his thoughts clear Julian Alvarez's impressive debut season with Atletico Madrid has seen Arsenal and Liverpool take note, but the Argentine has reservations about returning to the Premier League. Only 12 months ago he left Manchester City and headed to Spain. Alvarez has long been tipped for big things and stood up during his time in Manchester, but was undoubtedly behind Erling Haaland in the pecking order. Atletico came knocking and paid more than £80million to bring him to La Liga. City sanctioned the sale, landing huge profits, and Alvarez has quickly taken to life under Diego Simeone. He led the line for Atletico, scoring 29 times in all competitions this year. Marca reports that the new Premier League champions Liverpool and runners-up Arsenal have both registered interest in the 25-year-old. They claimed that the Gunners are regarded as the 'strongest bidder' with a striker firmly on their shortlist. Alvarez is well versed in the demands of the Premier League but isn't convinced about a return to England given how well he has settled in Spain and the ease at which he's fitted in with the Atletico set-up. The Spanish outlet also claims that Barcelona could give Alvarez the chance to remain in La Liga as they view him as the potential successor to Robert Lewandowski. The Catalans have landed the domestic double, downing Atletico en route. The World Cup winner has been a big hit in the capital and has underlined his love and affection for the club and their fans. He said on social media: "The first season at home is coming to an end. Thank you for always being there and for making me feel like I belong from day one." Alvarez is also only one year into a six-year deal with Atletico seeing him as their long-term frontman. Liverpool are in the market for more goals and may have more cash to spent should Darwin Nunez leave whilst Arsenal's striker plans may depend on whether they can land Viktor Gyokeres. Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has dismissed any notions of them offloading their star forward and claimed: "Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid. He's very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player. He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid." Arsenal pushing hardest for signature of Atletico Madrid star
Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has established himself as the star man in their forward line this season, after Los Rojiblancos forked out €75m to sign him from Manchester City, in a deal that could rise to €90m. Less than a year into his time at Atletico though, there are already clubs looking to pry him away. Despite Atletico remaining confident that they can retain Alvarez, multiple reports last week claimed that his representatives would be holding talks with Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Liverpool this week. Barcelona are also interested, albeit for next year, but they are cited as perhaps the one offer that Alvarez would listen to. Arsenal most interested in Julian Alvarez These reports have been confirmed by Marca, who say that Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in a deal this year. Their information is that Arsenal are pushing hardest for his signature, where former Atletico Sporting Director Andrea Berta is operating. The say his salary is €7m per annum plus €1m in bonuses, but Los Colchoneros will not get involved in an auction if a bigger offer comes in. Image via AFP / Bernat Armangue Atletico plans for Alvarez Los Rojiblancos do have plenty working in their favour though. Alvarez is not enthused by the idea of returning to the Premier League, and feels more comfortable in the Spanish capital. On top of that, he is content at the Metropolitano. Atletico also intend to build their side around Alvarez, and will make signings to surround him with talent. Diego Simeone and the club are convinced he is a cornerstone of their future, and one of their primary goals is to keep the Argentine happy. Who best to surround him with? One of the questions Simeone and Director of Football Carlos Bucero will have to answer is who to partner him with. Alvarez and Griezmann looked to be a blossoming partnership, but with the Frenchman struggling for form in the second half of the season, a turnaround will be needed to see him return. Simeone has generally preferred to use Alexander Sorloth off the bench, despite him being the most efficient of their forwards, while they have also been linked with a number of forwards for this summer.
