Atletico Ottawa adds to high-scoring attack, adding Mexican attacker on loan

OTTAWA - Atletico Ottawa, which tops the Canadian Premier League standings, has added to its league-leading attack with the signing of Mexican attacker Antonio Alvarez on a season-long loan from Club America. The 21-year-old Alvarez has made 85 appearances in the Club America system, mostly in the under-20 and under-23 ranks. He has one goal in four appearances with the senior side in Liga MX. 'He's a very technical player, with amazing one-on-one capacities and a strong ability to connect with his teammates,' Ottawa coach Diego Mejiía said in a statement. 'He has the profile to do great things here. He can play in the pocket or out wide, and inside the locker room, he's a valuable addition to our squad. Toño is going to be a great fit.' Ottawa says Alvarez will be available for Ottawa's game Sunday against visiting York United. 'Diego spoke very highly of the CPL and the club's vision,' Alvarez said. 'It was an easy choice. I want to win and I feel confident that I've joined a team that's on that path.' Ottawa (10-5-1) has scored 35 goals in league play this season with Sam Salter contributing a league-high 11 goals and Ballou Tabla adding six goals. —- This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 1, 2025
