Sarawak, Denmark explore green transport, energy collaboration

Lee (third left) presents a souvenir to Berner while others look on. KUCHING (Aug 8): Sarawak is exploring collaboration with Denmark on sustainable transport and green energy following a courtesy visit by Denmark's Ambassador to Malaysia, Kirstine Vangkilde Berner, to state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin today. Discussions focused on potential cooperation in R&D, particularly in hydrogen production, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and other low-carbon innovations aligned with Sarawak's green agenda. 'The ministry looks forward to forging closer ties with Denmark in technology exchange, expertise sharing, and joint projects that align with Sarawak's sustainable transport and green energy agenda,' Lee said in a statement. During the meeting, Lee briefed the Danish delegation on the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), which will feature Malaysia's first hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), and plans for a new Kuching International Airport envisioned as a modern regional gateway. Berner expressed Denmark's support for Sarawak's ambitions in advancing future-ready, environmentally friendly transport systems. Also present were State Transport Ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary Selamat Jati Yanjah and Aviation Technical Advisor Sio Yew Hua. The Danish Embassy was represented by Head of Trade Mark Perry, Commercial Advisor Jennifer Tang, and Counsellor Kristian Norfelt. collaboration Denmark green energy Lee Kim Shin transport

Jln Tun Jugah-Jln Stampin traffic light junction to close for 6 months from Aug 18 for ART works

Map from Sarawak Metro shows the affected road. KUCHING (Aug 6): The traffic light junction at Jalan Tun Jugah leading to Jalan Stampin, including access to Hui Sing Garden, will be temporarily closed for six months from Aug 18 until February next year. Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, in a statement today, said the closure is to facilitate the construction of viaduct pillars for the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) station along the Red Line of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project. 'Road users are advised to drive carefully along this route and follow the traffic management measures and road signs that have been put in place,' it said. The company also encouraged motorists to consider alternative routes to Jalan Stampin to help ease congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow. 'Sarawak Metro is grateful for the public's support, cooperation and understanding as it strives to develop a modern green public transport system for the future convenience of all in Greater Kuching,' it added. Sarawak Metro, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), has been tasked by the state government with modernising public transport through the KUTS project. Phase 1 of the project involves the development of three lines: the Blue Line from Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in the city centre; the Red Line from Kuching Sentral to Pending; and the Green Line from Pending to Damai. The backbone of KUTS will be zero-emission ART hydrogen vehicles operating on dedicated, trackless lanes, supported by hydrogen-powered feeder buses for first- and last-mile connectivity. This adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles aligns with the Sarawak government's efforts to promote a hydrogen economy and decarbonise the state's public transport sector. Sarawak records three weeks without rabies cases, Mayor urges continued vigilance

He urged everyone to help maintain this positive record, with the ultimate goal of making Sarawak rabies-free. 'Let us continue working together to curb rabies and achieve zero rabies infections for Sarawak,' he said during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. On a separate issue, Wee advised road users to be extra cautious when making U-turns at the traffic lights near Teck Kong Supermarket in Tabuan Jaya. The junction is currently undergoing construction of Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), part of the Kuching Urban Transformation System (KUTS) project undertaken by Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd. Due to the ongoing construction, the space available for U-turns has been reduced, posing challenges and risks for motorists. In light of this, the mayor appealed to drivers to slow down when the traffic light turns amber, during the countdown, reminding road users to stop. 'It is very risky to attempt a U-turn once the countdown has begun, as vehicles will start moving when the green light activates from the other direction,' he said, adding that colisions may occur if the U-turn is not completed in time. Wee also observed that some motorists drive slowly during the green light and accelerate when the light turns amber—a habit he strongly discouraged. 'The amber lights are not a signal for you to take a chance.' He called on all road users to follow traffic rules and regulations to avoid untoward incidents and hoped that the construction in Tabuan Jaya would be completed as soon as possible to offer greater convenience for all. Contractor to redesign KUTS project barriers at Tabuan Stutong Commercial Centre entrance

Wee (right), See (second left), and others are seen during mediation with the contractor. KUCHING (July 31): A contractor for Sarawak Metro, which is the implementer of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, has agreed to dismantle proposed barriers at an entrance to the Tabuan Stutong Commercial Centre. Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the move would accommodate the needs of a business operator. 'The contractor has assured that the proposed barriers, which cause blockage to the main entrance of the retail shop at Tabuan Stutong, will be dismantled and its layout will be redesigned to suit the needs of the business operator,' he said in a statement today following mediation at the site. A shop owner had complained about barriers put up at the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) construction site on Jalan Wan Alwi. The affected business operator, who is the tenant occupying a ground floor corner shophouse at Tabuan Stutong, claimed his retail outlet was gravely affected by the approximately four-metre-high barriers. He expressed fear that the barriers would result in a significant drop in sales during the ART construction period. Wee said any development project, be it undertaken by the government or private sector, must be carried out in accordance with laws and regulations, minimising inconvenience. 'As the mayor, I have a pivotal role to play in community engagement, especially when it comes to addressing people's interests or predicament vis-a-vis government agencies,' he said. He slammed certain quarters who took the opportunity to politicise ART or issues arising from the KUTS project to achieve political mileage instead of helping the aggrieved parties resolve matters. 'We need development at one hand but not at the expense of our people, especially at this very challenging time of economic struggle by all sectors including but not limited to retail businesses,' said Wee. He also thanked Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, councillor Eric Tay, and other community leaders, who were present to show their support and concern. Bandar Kuching MP calls for temporary halt to ART works in Taman Stutong Indah

Lam assisted and mediated discussions between the residents, Sarawak Metro, and the ART contractors, resulting in several immediate measures being agreed upon to address the residents' concerns. KUCHING (July 30): Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has called on Sarawak Metro to temporarily halt all Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) works in Taman Stutong Indah until a stakeholder dialogue can be convened and the residents' concerns have been fully addressed. Dr Yii said his office will send a formal letter requesting a meeting with Sarawak Metro and the project's designer‑consultant to review the ART track's alignment and design in full transparency. 'It is vital for all stakeholders to be involved so that every concern is addressed constructively,' he said in the statement today. Meanwhile, Dr Yii said his special assistant, George Lam, has successfully assisted and mediated discussions between the residents, Sarawak Metro, and the ART contractors, resulting in several immediate measures being agreed upon to address the residents' concerns. 'Sarawak Metro and the contractors have agreed to instal metal hoardings to prevent dust and debris from spreading to the surrounding residential area during construction. 'They have also committed to improving traffic management in the area and to issuing prior notices to residents if any closures or diversions could affect road access to the housing estate. 'To maintain the cleanliness of the surrounding area, the contractors have instructed their workers to properly dispose of all construction waste and rubbish. 'Furthermore, the contractors will direct their workers to avoid parking their vehicles directly in front of residential units in order to ensure better accessibility and privacy for the residents in the area,' he said. Dr Yii stressed that while the ART project promises long-term benefits for Kuching, its implementation must not compromise the well-being of neighbouring communities. 'As MP, I believe it is my duty to act as a bridge between the people and the authorities, ensuring that development projects are implemented responsibly with minimal disruption to the surrounding community,' he said. Dr Yii said his office will continue to follow up on these measures, maintain open communication among all parties, and convene further dialogue sessions as necessary for the good of the people.
