James Cameron Wants to Expand the World of AVATAR with an Animated Anthology Project — GeekTyrant
The world of Avatar might be expanding once again but this time in animated form. James Cameron, the mastermind behind Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water , is eyeing a whole new medium to explore Pandora's rich mythology. While some fans are counting down the days until Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters this December, Cameron is already planting seeds for a potential animated anthology series that could dive deeper into the untold stories of his sci-fi universe. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Cameron revealed he's been talking with Disney about launching an Avatar animated project. He shared his vision saying: 'I said, 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world.' There might even be an animated feature in there – it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature. 'A good early example is The Animatrix, where they went afield in the Matrix world. These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar.' What Cameron's talking about sounds incredibly cool. He's not just thinking about rehashing the same characters or events. He wants to go wide with it. Deep cuts. Backstories. Side quests. The kind of lore expansions that fans eat up. 'Backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.' Of course, this idea is still in early development and hasn't moved past the brainstorming phase. 'We haven't done much with that yet. We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing, and I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.' So while there's no official greenlight yet, just knowing Cameron is serious about bringing more Avatar stories to life in animation is pretty cool an interesting. The franchise has already proven it has the depth and scale to support spin-offs and side stories, and animation could be the perfect playground for creative experimentation in the Avatar universe. In the meantime, fans can gear up for Avatar: Fire and Ash , which premieres in theaters on December 19, 2025. The film sees Sam Worthington return as Jake Sully, alongside Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, Edi Falco, and more.

'Avatar: Fire and Ash' trailer reveals new tribe and conflict ahead of December 2025 cinema release
Disney has released the first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in James Cameron's Avatar franchise, scheduled for theatrical release on December 19 2025. The trailer introduces the Ash People, a new tribe on Pandora, known for their association with fire and their aggressive tactics. Director James Cameron previewed the film at the 2024 D23 Expo, describing it as a continuation of the expansive narrative that began in Avatar: The Way of Water. Cameron noted that the third film explores 'really challenging territory' for its central characters and brings emotional stakes that surpass the previous instalments. The trailer reveals that Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, and the Metkayina clan are now confronting the Ash People, led by a character named Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin. The footage shows Varang commanding fire and forming an alliance with Colonel Quaritch, reprised by Stephen Lang. Her closing line in the trailer, 'Your goddess has no dominion here,' sets the tone for the new conflict. Returning cast members include Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, and Britain Dalton. New additions to the cast feature Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. According to Cameron, Fire and Ash was originally part of a combined storyline with The Way of Water, but the project expanded into two films during development. He also teased that the Ash People represent a more violent contrast to the previously introduced Na'vi clans.

‘Avatar: Fire And Ash' trailer released – and fans aren't impressed
The first trailer for James Cameron's sci-fi adventure Avatar: Fire And Ash – the third instalment in the Avatar franchise – has been released... And fans aren't impressed. The film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on 19 December, comes three years after Avatar: The Way of Water. It sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet return to the series, and introduces a new group called the Ash People – led by Varang, played by Oona Chaplin. 'Your goddess has no dominion here,' Varang ominously declares at the end of the trailer. Quality when it comes to plot doesn't seem to have much dominion here either, as the trailer feels... well, a bit naff. See for yourself: The trailer has racked up millions of views on the official Avatar YouTube account. However, comments haven't been too kind... 'Every shot looks like a desktop wallpaper'. 'Visually looks amazing as per the other two but does anyone actually care for the story or characters?' said one fan, while another questioned what the impact of the ongoing Avatar franchise will be on Cameron's legacy as a filmmaker: 'James Cameron has become obsessed and consumed by Avatar. Wasting his time and talent when he could be making great action, scifi and horror.' It's true that plot and character development don't seem to be Cameron's main priority, as evidenced by the first two films – especially 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water. In our review, we described the second chapter as a 'soulless sequel' and "an empty spectacle that is nothing more than a showboating exercise in CGI engineering and worldbuilding.' We added that it was an 'insanely expensive passion project that is a feast for the eyes but completely devoid of heart, revealing Cameron to be a master image-crafter but a godawful storyteller.' Read our full review here. To make matters worse, we reported in January that Avatar: Fire And Ash was going to be a punishingly long ride, as it is supposed to be 3 hours + long. While hardly surprising considering how the first Avatar film clocked in at 162 minutes and its sequel was a butt-bruising 192 minutes, those who are already sick of the style-over-substance Smurfs-meets-Pocahontas-in-spaaaaace saga are going to need powerful bladder control to sit through this next episode. Avatar: Fire and Ash is set for theatrical release on 19 December 2025. Despite our reservations, we keep an open mind – stay tuned to Euronews Culture for our December review. Three more Avatar movies are coming in the next six years. Avatar 4 will hit theaters in December 2029, followed by Avatar 5 in December 2031. We're not making any promises for those ones just now.

Fans rave over 'best antagonist in cinema history' in Avatar 3 trailer
The trailer for James Cameron's highly anticipated threequel Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally dropped online – and there are already huge fans of one new character in particular. Avatar 3 isn't scheduled to arrive in cinemas until December, but the filmmaker has created some early buzz for the next instalment in his epic big-budget sci-fi franchise. Shot back-to-back with 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, Fire and Ash sees the return of a sprawling cast including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass and Britain Dalton, plus new additions Oona Chaplin, Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. And it's Chaplin's Varang, the fiery and aggressive leader of the newly-introduced new Mangkwan clan (Ash People), who has excited a lot of fans after her scene-stealing appearance in the trailer. She's an intimidating figure in glimpses throughout, before her triumphant/terrifying moment at the end where she is seen warning Weaver's Kiri in menacing tones: 'Your goddess has no dominion here.' 'She's going to be one of the best antagonists of [sic] cinema history,' claimed one fan account after her fierce appearance in the trailer. 'She's gonna be such a sick villain,' added @NeekStreak, while @owenpratt93 observed: 'Varang already looks and feels like the best character of #AvatarFireAndAsh. The idea of a Na'vi who rejected Eywa is incredibly interesting, and this character oozes charisma even from just a few shots.' Another fan acknowledged they were 'losing their mind over Varang' while @MoFandoms commented: 'The way she said 'your goddess has no dominion here', I peed a little.' It comes after Cameron revealed the upcoming film's name and hinted at the antagonist at the D23 Disney fan event in California, which he appeared at last year August alongside Saldaña and Worthington. 'We're going into really challenging territory for all the characters that you know and love, and there are new characters – there's one especially, we think you're going to love, or maybe I should say love to hate!' he told the 12,000-stong audience, including Metro. He also promised that fans would get to see 'a lot more of Pandora that you never saw before' with new cultures, settings, creatures and biomes. 'Here's what I can tell you – the new film is not what you expect, but it's definitely what you want,' he concluded. Game of Thrones actress Chaplin, 39, is also the granddaughter of screen legend and comic Charlie Chaplin. She has also given a bit more insight into the 'unresolved trauma' of Varang and the Mangkwan after they were hit by a natural disaster, which caused her to shirk Pandora's spiritual entity, Eywa. 'She basically goes towards a different power, and tries to harness that, and in so doing kind of raises her people out of misery,' Chaplin explained to Empire magazine. 'It's easy to fall into the villain mentality, but actually she's the hero of her people because she's saved them out of misery and starvation and begging.' Avatar: Fire And Ash sees Jake (Worthington) and Neytiri's (Saldaña) family grappling with grief in the wake of the death of son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters) as conflict between the RDA and the Pandorans escalates after the Na'vi and Metikayina clan's hard-won victory at the end of Avatar: The Way of Water. The Mangkwan promise to bring more conflict too; Cameron first teased them in January 2023, saying that he was featuring 'different cultures from those I have already shown' and that he plans 'to show the Na'vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides'. 'In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na'vi examples. In Avatar 3 we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters,' he explained to French publication 20 Minutes, via Total Film. 'I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal.' Had a sneak peek at the AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH trailer last night (in 3D) – and James Cameron has me convinced all over again. Phenomenal. Tremendous visuals, new antagonist Varang may become my next obsession. Nothing convinced me #Avatar 3 won't be bigger and better than the last — Tori Brazier (@dinotaur) July 23, 2025 I have seen the trailer for #AVATAR Fire and Ash, and it is as stunning as anyone is anticipating. James Cameron once again looks to be unleashing a powerful story that will resonate, and the visuals are (somehow) on another level. There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be… — Austin Burke (@theBurk3nator) July 21, 2025 I just EXPERIENCED the #AvatarFireAndAsh trailer in glorious 3D. I'm breathless. Visuals expectedly surreal but man is the Ash People's landscape something to behold. Pandora Civil War loading. What a privilege it is to be alive during this revolutionary franchise. @screenrant — Liam (@LiamTCrowley) July 21, 2025 Journalists and tastemakers were previously lavishing the first proper look at Avatar: Fire and Ash with praise, after Disney secretly screened the trailer for them days ahead of its online release. 'As stunning as anyone is anticipating,' tweeted film critic Austin Burke, who also noted that 'the visuals are (somehow) on another level'. 'There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be the biggest movie of 2025, and epic doesn't feel like it does this trailer justice…' Meanwhile, @TheOscarRace simply announced, 'It's going to be the best film of the year', while ScreenRant's @LiamTCrowley admitted he was 'breathless'. 'What a privilege it is to be alive during this revolutionary franchise,' he added. 'Nobody is touching Cameron visually. The next Avatar looks amazing,' posted Kit Stone. Others had exciting comparisons for the film on the strength of the first trailer alone. 'It's insane we're getting Last of the Mohicans meets like Empire Strikes Back!' suggested @MOVIEDEATHS. 'Giant action set pieces somehow the visuals look even better than Way of Water [sic].' More Trending Thanks to the success of Avatar: The Way of Water, which is currently the third highest grossing film ever behind the first Avatar – having made over $2.3million at the box office – we will also get Avatar 4 and 5.
