Teenager among three dead after BMW crash

A teenager and two adults are dead after a BMW crash on the M5, Avon and Somerset Police have said. The force said another child is in a critical condition after suffering serious injuries in the crash in south Gloucestershire on Friday night. A police statement said: 'A white BMW car left the northbound carriageway at approximately 9pm last night between junction 14 [Falfield] and the Michaelwood services. As a result, the M5 remains closed in both directions between junctions 14 and 13 [Stroud]. 'We're sad to report two adults in their 40s and one teenage child who were travelling in the vehicle have died from their injuries. 'A second child sustained serious injuries and they have been taken to hospital where they remain in a critical condition.' Insp Mark Vicary, of Avon and Somerset's roads policing unit, said: 'Our thoughts first and foremost are with the child in hospital and loved ones who have received the most awful news overnight. A specially-trained officer will provide them with support at this difficult time.' He added: 'Emergency services have worked throughout the night at what has proved to be a very complex scene. They have worked diligently and professionally to try to save life in the most tragic of circumstances. 'It has been necessary to keep the road closures in place at this time to enable further collision investigation work during daylight hours. Vehicle recovery work still needs to be completed and National Highways will need to assess the carriageway and make any necessary repairs before it will be safe to reopen the motorway.' Mr Vicary continued: 'As a result, the M5 remains closed this morning and we estimate it will need to stay shut in both directions for the next few hours, however we are doing all we can to reopen it as soon as possible. 'We appreciate this closure is causing delays and disruption to the public, particularly at the end of the half-term break. But given the severity of this distressing incident, we hope the public can understand the reasons why this is necessary and ask them to consider alternative travel plans.'

Natura CEO Bets on Mexico as Cosmetic Maker Recovers

Natura & Co. is targeting the Mexican market in its push to boost sales as chief executive officer João Paulo Ferreira works to reinvigorate the cosmetics company after disappointing earnings at the end of last year. 'We will grow disproportionately in Mexico,' Ferreira said in an interview. Natura plans to expand its presence in the country from its current footprint of 16 stores and stands, as well as its online operation and its network of more than 500,000 beauty consultants that offer its products in the country. Ferreira declined to provide any targets for store openings. Natura is offering its entire product line, from perfumery to hair products and makeup, in Mexico but currently has just a 5.4 percent share of the market. That trails the 11.5 percent share that French rival L'Oréal holds in Latin America's second-largest economy. While the Brazilian company plans to accelerate its investment in Mexico through organic growth, the CEO didn't rule out an acquisition in the future. Ferreira, who led the Latin America division before being named to oversee the entire group in March, said his goal is to 'capture value from our own business' while laying the groundwork to resume dividend payments. Natura shares plunged 30 percent on March 14 after fourth-quarter results fell short of expectations, sparking investor criticism. The stock has pared some of those losses to trade at about $10.50 a share, down 17.7 percent so far this year. Ferreira said he's hoping to restore market confidence with a clearer strategy and financial discipline. 'The Latin America business is a cash generator and we want to minimize cash consumption,' the CEO said in New York this month. 'We don't have short-term debt — and it's relatively cheap — so in the near future we can expect dividends again.' Ferreira spent 48 hours in the US financial capital for meetings with international investors, saying his message to them was that Natura is 'back on track' under his leadership. He also detected growing interest among global money managers about its home market. 'They were keen to talk about Brazil — more than I expected,' he said. Amazon & Avon Natura is famous for using Amazon rainforest ingredients in its beauty products and is planning to announce a biodiversity research facility in the region during the COP30 summit in November. The 30th edition of the marquee United Nation climate conference will be held this year in the northern Brazilian city of Belem. Ferreira said Natura isn't on the hunt for deals in the short term, but may analyze acquisition opportunities after its Avon International unit completes the bankruptcy protection process it initiated last August. Avon 'should not burn as much cash as it burned last year, including the restructuring costs,' Ferreira said. Asked about a possible buyer for Avon, he said Natura is considering all options, including the sale of assets in parts or in a block. Jessie Crye led off the Avon fourth with a leadoff triple and Rylie Miller scored her with a fielder's choice to put the Riverhawks up 1-0. Teagen Burke equalized with a bunt that scored Lindsay Stuck in the bottom half of the fourth. Wellsville is now 20-1 and headed to Saturday's state qualifier at MCC. They will face Haverling with first pitch scheduled for 5:30pm. Avon finished their season at 15-4. The Warriors added two more runs on RBI walks in the 6th. DeValder had to escape a jam in the top of the 6th after Sara Skripnik led off the inning with a booming double that missed clearing the left field walk by two or three feet. DeValder got a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt to keep the Kings scoreless. Schroeder improved to 19-1 and will play for all the Class AA marbles Saturday morning at 10am against their cross town rivals from Thomas. That game will also be at MCC. Kearney/Chesterton finished their season at 11-4. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Kayla Pickering, 'gritty' Avon stun Brownsburg in sectional final. 'We never gave up.'

BROWNSBURG — Kayla Pickering stepped into the batter's box knowing she was going to win it. Avon had fought like crazy to get within reach of rival Brownsburg, scoring four runs in the sixth to pull within two, then escaping a bases-loaded jam in the seventh unscathed to reclaim momentum entering the final stanza. Olivia Yeary ripped a one-out single to score Reagan Cooper and advanced on the throw to set up Pickering, the team's No. 8 hitter, with runners on second and third. When she peered in from the third-base box, Kiah Ferrell could see in the junior's eyes that she was ready. She felt good, the Orioles coach said. "And when your kids are confident in themselves, that's a great feeling to have as a coach. All that preparation has paid off." Pickering fouled off the first pitch, then with the second, she rifled a sharply hit grounder through the left side of the infield. Ferrell initially motioned to hold Yeary at third, but when the ball was misplayed in the outfield, she frantically waved her home. Players began pouring from the Avon dugout as Yeary crossed home plate, mobbing her before enshrouding Pickering halfway down the third-base line. "My heart was beating on second, but I had so much faith in Kayla. Just so much," Yeary said. "I knew she was going to smack that ball into a gap." Avon wins the Class 4A Sectional 11 championship game, 10-9, its fifth consecutive sectional crown and 14th overall. The Orioles will host Center Grove in Tuesday's regional championship. "We have a lot of grit, a lot of trust in each other," Yeary said. "A lot of heart for the game, a lot of passion," added pitcher Addie Forst. "Grit" was the word of the night on the Avon side, an apt descriptor of a team that's gone 8-4 following a 3-13 start to the year. They were an inexperienced outfit staring down the barrel of a grueling Hoosier Crossroads Conference schedule entering the season, Ferrell said, and knew they were going to take their lumps. But in her heart of hearts, she knew this was going to be a second-half team. And that's when "things finally started to click," Ferrell continued. They started to hit. They played better defense behind their pitcher. And they had harder practices. "We were intentional and we focused more on the mental game," she said. "And I think it finally paid off, which is really nice." Avon's latest victory was keyed by its ability to minimize damage. Forst surrendered five runs through the first four innings, but allowed only one run and stranded the bases loaded in the top of the fourth. Her efforts were rewarded in the bottom half, with Yeary launching a three-run home run to make it 5-3. When the Bulldogs answered with four runs over the next two innings, the Orioles answered with a four-run sixth, tallying runs on a wild pitch, a two-RBI double by Lilly Heath and a Zoey Chavez base hit. "We never gave up," Pickering said. "The game doesn't know," Yeary interjected. "They threw punches," Pickering continued. "We threw them back." Amidst the rally, Ferrell looked to the dugout and asked Forst if she was ready to pitch the seventh. I'm ready for the opportunity, she replied. The first two runners reached, then Brownsburg loaded the bases with a two-out walk, but Forst buckled down and got a pop out to end the inning and hold the margin at two. "That girl likes to do that to herself," Ferrell laughed. "We've tried and tried and tried to talk about being more efficient and not getting into sticky situations, but she finds a way to get out of it. Grit is a good word to describe her." Avon advances to face Center Grove in Tuesday's regional. The Trojans won the regular-season meeting, 10-9, on May 12. "We're not done yet," Ferrell said. "And I think it's really cool that, whatever the expectation is, we like to be the underdog and we like to have our backs against the wall. We're gritty."
