#SHOWBIZ: Melly Goeslaw gives Malaysian fans a most colourful 'Prom Night'

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular Indonesian singer-songwriter Melly Goeslaw had more than 9,000 guests dancing and singing at their seats throughout her two-and-a-half-hour concert at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil here. Her 9pm show organised by Icon Entertainment was the third season of "Ada Apa Dengan Melly & Friends?" which was also staged at the same venue last year. The concert was themed "Prom Night" and saw Melly, her musicians, backup singers and dancers all dressed in colourful and fanciful costumes. The 51-year-old artiste performed 26 songs, with several medleys. Among the hits that she performed were "Ingin Mencintai Dan Dicintai", "Berdua Lebih Baik", "Hey Ladies", and "Ku Bahagia". Melly also performed covers of Malaysian songs "Janji Manismu" (Datuk Aishah Ariffin), "Isabella" (Search) and "Betapa Ku Cinta Padamu" (Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza). Her guest artistes for the evening were Aina Abdul, Nicholas Saputra and Dinda Ghania, and Radin of Era served as the master of ceremonies. Among the artistes who attended the concert were Datuk M. Nasir, Siti Nurhaliza, Datuk Amy Search, Elite and Raffi Ahmad. From their seats, Siti Nurhaliza joined Melly in the song "Betapa Ku Cinta Padamu" while Amy joined her in "Isabella". Born in Bandung, Melly began singing as a backup vocalist for Elfa Secioria while she was still in secondary school. She is the daughter of the late veteran Indonesian pop singer Melky Goeslaw. In 1995, she formed the band Potret with her musician husband Anto Hoed. After releasing several albums with Potret, Melly began a solo career, releasing her eponymous debut album "Melly" in 1999. She reached the peak of her popularity in 2002 when she composed the soundtrack of the best-selling movie "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?". Melly's onstage persona has been compared to Icelandic pop queen Bjork, with eccentric costumes and "wild" hairstyles. "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?" garnered her a Citra Award at the 2004 Indonesian Film Festival. She has written and composed more than 500 songs, produced movie soundtracks and judged reality talent contests in her three-decade career.

Kang Khai Xing says Malaysia Masters umpire drama frustrated him for ‘just a day', eyes World Tour comeback with Aaron Tai

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Young doubles shuttler Kang Khai Xing is not one to wallow in self-pity or dwell on things for long. And that explains why it took him just one day to get over the three controversial umpiring calls that went against him and his partner, Aaron Tai in their 10-21, 26-24, 16-21 loss to Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaardmen in the 2025 Malaysia Masters last week. 'That's over and done with, I've come to terms with it. I was frustrated for just a day. The next day (after the incident) I was okay. Hopefully, we can bounce back stronger in the next tournament,' the 19-year-old Khai Xing told reporters after a training session here today. On Saturday (May 24), the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) said in a statement that they have made an official complaint to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) regarding the umpire's decisions, which were considered controversial during Khai Xing-Aaron's second-round clash against the Danes at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. According to BAM, three decisions made at crucial points of the match between Khai Xing-Aaron, the 2024 world junior champions, and Kjaer-Sogaard had significantly influenced the outcome, thus raising serious concerns over the fairness of play. Meanwhile, Khai Xing admitted that he and Aaron are still adapting to the training style of national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. 'There is better chemistry between us but we still need to adapt to the coach's style of play that involves no lifting (of the shuttlecock) during training sessions... we hope to continue improving,' he said. He also said that he and Aaron, who are ranked 53rd in the world, are still getting used to competing at a higher level, including against higher-ranked opponents. Although they still have a lot of room for improvement, Khai Xing is still hopeful that he and Aaron can win at least one more World Tour title this year. The pair are gearing up for three more tournaments this year: the Macau Open (July 29-Aug 3); Hong Kong Open (Sept 9-14); and Korea Open (Sept 23-28). — Bernama

Pearly-Thinaah setting aside contract issue to focus on Malaysia Masters

Women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah 'just want to focus on this week's tournament'. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : National top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah are keeping mum on their future with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). Thinaah said they had decided not to let the off-court issue distract them from the Malaysia Masters 2025 at Axiata Arena here, which runs from tomorrow until May 25. 'We just want to focus on this week's tournament. We're just going to play our best for each and every match,' she told reporters after the court testing session here today. On May 10, BAM deputy president I V Subramaniam said the future of the world No 4 pair would be decided after their return from the Thailand Open 2025, which ran from May 13 to 18. Subramaniam said the newly-crowned Thailand Open champions had yet to sign and accept a new contract with the association. Pearly-Thinaah clinched their first title of the season yesterday, downing South Korean duo Jeong Na Eun-Lee Yeon Woo 21-16, 21-17 to be crowned the Thailand Open 2025 champions. Asked whether this could be the time for them to claim back-to-back titles, Pearly said they did not want to put too much pressure on themselves but hoped to play their best for the home crowd. 'We are really motivated and excited to play on home ground, but as usual, we don't want to put too much pressure. 'The championship (Thailand Open 2025) is already in the past. Now, we just want to take one step at a time and look forward (to the Malaysia Masters 2025),' she said. BAM secretary-general Kenny Goh said the association would address Pearly-Thinaah's contract situation at the most appropriate time possible, as their previous contract expired last December. 'Let's be patient. We will try to resolve it as soon as possible,' he said.

#SHOWBIZ: Ella celebrates 'Ella USA' album's 30th anniversary with spectacular concert

GENTING HIGHLANDS: Malaysia's rock queen Ella has done it again. The evergreen singer, whose career has spanned four decades, cast her musical spell over more than 5,000 fans at her Ella USA 30th Anniversary concert at Resorts World Genting's Arena of Stars tonight. Ella's two-hour concert was a celebration of her hugely successful 1994 album, Ella USA. She serenaded fans with 20 power-packed songs, including medleys featuring Permata Biru, Standing in the Eyes of the World, Pengemis Cinta, Kitalah Bintang, Sembilu, and Sepi Sekuntum Mawar Merah. However, most of the songs were from Ella USA, including Gemilang, Rindu, Nuri, Ala Amerika, Penawar, Menanti, Mungkin, Itulah Saya, Permata Pemotong Permata, Risau, Esok Lusa Selamanya, and Aku Kau Dia. The concert also marked Ella's reunion with legendary Japanese guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto, who has known her for three decades and also worked on her Ella USA album. Ella, 59, said: "Yamamoto and I are still good friends and keep in touch. In fact, he was my guest musician at my 30th Anniversary Concert in 2016." She added that recording the Ella USA album was a memorable milestone in her career, as she collaborated with top musicians from around the world. "In fact, there were some experiences I will never forget, such as walking in the cold to the recording studio and experiencing an earthquake. Not only that, the entire recording process was done during the day," she said. Ella, whose real name is Norzila Aminuddin, has been rocking since she was 18. Forty years on, she has hardly "aged" — physically, mentally, and, most of all, vocally. Her last major concert, Jilid Akhir Ella Puteri Kota, was held at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, in 2023, where she celebrated 35 years in music with 35 songs.
