New Ayr United goalkeeper David Mitchell on his 'unfinished business' at Somerset Park

The first new signing of the summer brings experience to the number one jersey and returns to Somerset Park some 15 years after he left as a youth. David Mitchell says he has unfinished business at Ayr United - after rejoining the club he left as a kid. As a teenager he watched on from the bench when Ryan Stevenson scored his famous promotion play-off winner at Airdrie in 2009. ‌ Now Mitchell is back where it all began some 15 years since he left Somerset Park to pursue first team football. ‌ Mitchell, 35, returns as an experienced pair of hands bidding to bring stability between the sticks for United. And he insists Ayr are getting a far better version of the player who departed in search of regular game time. He told the Ayrshire Post:"It's nice to be back where it all started. When I was a kid here and went on loan to Stranraer, it was the best thing I ever did in terms of my development. "When I returned I was wanting to play games but looking back, I was never ready for that. So I feel like it's a bit of unfinished business to come back now. It's a proud moment for me. "When the manager picked up the phone, it was a bit of a no brainer. You just have to look at the ambition the club is showing and the plans that they have in place." ‌ Mitchell, who joins on a two-year deal after leaving Championship rivals Partick Thistle, is adamant he has the experience to calm a position that was often turbulent for Ayr last season. He added: "It's not something I've overly thought about - I just focus on the job I have to do and everything else should take care of itself. "I know I'll have a role to play with the younger lads and the other goalies - and I'll learn from them as well. I'm experienced but you never stand still in this game and you never stop learning. ‌ "It helped that I played a lot of games early on in my career and have always been an organiser and very vocal. I've always liked that side of the game and if you do that side right then it makes the job far easier." Mitchell, who was part of United's Academy setup before joining Brian Reid's first team back in the day, added: "It's really nice to be back amongst familiar faces. "Davie White was the head of the Academy back then as well and was someone who was really good for me. You always remember those people who really believed in you in the game. "So this is a move which just feels good for me and it will be another exciting season in a highly competitive Championship. "But the ambition on show here is big - the club are not just happy to be where they are. It's now up to us on the pitch to make that happen."

Premier Sports Cup draw sees Ayr United set for clash with St Mirren as group stage revealed

The Honest Men will test themselves against the Saints as part of their group campaign. Ayr have learned their Premier Sports Cup fate this lunchtime after being drawn in Group D of the new season's first competition. Scott Brown's side will tackle Premiership opposition in the shape of St Mirren, who enjoyed an excellent season to finish inside the top six under Steven Robinson. ‌ The Honest Men will also face newly promoted Arbroath after the Red Lichties won promotion back to the Championship following a great season at Gayfield. United's group is completed by League Two sides Annan Athletic and Forfar. The group stage will kick off on the weekend of July 12 and run through until the end of the month before the curtain is raised on the new league season.

Racing tips and nap from Newsboy for Hamilton and 4 other Wednesday meetings

Newsboy's Nap selection for Wednesday, May 28, is the Jim Goldie-trained Oriental Prince (4.00) at Hamilton. His next best, In A Hurry (3.10), runs at Beverley ENJOY some right royal success at Hamilton Park this afternoon by putting your faith in ORIENTAL PRINCE (4.00, nap) in the ICB (Water Proofing) Handicap . The Jim Goldie-trained four year old continued his remarkable season when winning at Haydock 18 days ago for a sixth success in 2025. ‌ On that occasion, he showed his courage by holding on from Abduction by a short head, and he can defy a further 3lb rise to garner an eighth career victory. ‌ At Beverley, be quick off the mark with IN A HURRY (3.10, nb) in the Skidby Restricted Maiden Stakes. The David O'Meara-trained Time Test filly was a good second in an Ayr maiden over a mile trip on her seasonal debut in April but was well beaten last time when stepping up a furlong in trip. The combination of that extended distance and her over-enthusiasm put paid to her chances on that occasion, but now she is down to seven and a half furlongs. Her debut as a juvenile last term was over seven furlongs and she was beaten a length into second in an encouraging run, and with two runner-up spots on her CV she looks ready to get her head in front. ‌ Wednesday tips HAMILTON 2.00 VICTOR CEE 2.30 A WAR EAGLE ‌ 3.00 AYR POET 3.30 LARCHILL LASS 4.00 ORIENTAL PRINCE (NAP) ‌ 4.30 DESTINADO 5.03 BRUCE BANNER ‌ BEVERLEY 2.10 DINAMO 2.40 COUNT PALATINE ‌ 3.10 IN A HURRY (NB) 3.40 CASILLI 4.10 HOSTELRY ‌ 4.40 SAWGRASS 5.10 GOLDEN RAINBOW ‌ NEWTON ABBOT 2.18 SHARP GLANCE 2.48 MR LE PHILOSOPHE ‌ 3.18 TELLAIRSUE 3.48 KICK UP A STORM 4.18 STRIKING A POSE ‌ 4.48 ON SPRINGS KEMPTON ‌ 5.18 OCEAN ODYSSEY 5.52 NANDITA 6.22 DR STRANGELOVE ‌ 6.52 SPY CHIEF 7.22 CRITICAL ACLAIM 7.52 ELTERWATER ‌ 8.22 TURQUINO 8.52 CAPONE ‌ CARTMEL 5.40 AT VIMEIRO 6.10 VOCAL DUKE ‌ 6.40 FOUROFAKIND 7.10 EVENWOOD SONOFAGUN 7.40 COQOLINO ‌ 8.10 LERMOOS LEGEND 8.40 AUTONOMOUS CLOUD Gamble responsibly Everyone at Reach is committed to promoting safer gambling. The biggest club rugby crowd of the season assembled at the Greenyards on Saturday for the Howden Melrose Sevens and while they were denied a home victory, the hosts did make it to their first final since 2018. The honours, though, went to Shogun, a guest side filled with Spain sevens internationals who play on the World Series circuit. They won the Centenary Cup, coming from behind to defeat Melrose 12-5 in the final. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad While the weather wasn't quite Costa Brava, it was warm enough and although the heavens opened during the second round tie between Selkirk and Shogun it did little to dampen the spirits of the 7,000 or so spectators. Joy for Shogun Rugby who won the Melrose Sevens. | Lisa Ferguson Tournament organisers had reshaped the draw this year in a bid to help the local teams. The guest sides, who tend to be filled with semi-pro and fully professional players, were all made to play in the first round while the seven Borders clubs and Watsonians were given byes into round two. As it turned out, only Melrose managed to make it through to the quarter-finals as Peebles, Hawick, Selkirk, Kelso, Gala, Jed-Forest and Sonians were all ousted in the last 16. Currie and Ayr flew the flag for the Scottish club game, with the former unlucky to lose 22-19 to Melrose in a cracking quarter-final tie. Ayr went one better, and enjoyed a highly impressive 28-0 win over New Zealand guests Te Awamutu before losing 33-26 to Shogun in the semis. Te Awamutu, from Waikato, treated spectators to an impromptu haka before the final. Shogun, founded by Englishman Terry Sands, are an elite invitational outfit who call on players from around the world. They also won at Melrose in 2024 but this year's model drew heavily on Spanish talent. For Mata, winning at Melrose felt like a special moment and very different to his experiences with Spain in the more strait-laced World Series. 'I'd say this is like raw rugby sevens,' said Mata, who also played last year. 'It's pure sevens, and with the crowd and the atmosphere, it's amazing. I really love playing here. I told all the Spanish guys about this tournament and they didn't believe me and now they're so happy. They think they're in a movie!' Melrose, who had the compensation of being crowned Kings of the Sevens as the most successful team on this season's Borders circuit, reached the final by beating Edinburgh Rugby 19-14 in the semis. The capital pro side sent an academy squad down to the Borders and there were stand-out performances from Jerry Blyth-Lafferty and Lewis Wells, particularly in their quarter-final win over the Breadalbane Storm guest side which featured Fijian international Niko Matawalu. The Impi's bolstered their Monegasque squad with a handful of former Scotland Sevens internationals. One of them, Freddie Owsley, scored arguably the try of the day in their win over Kelso. The former Edinburgh flyer collected the ball in his own in-goal area before dodging past a couple of Kelso players and running the length of the field. In the women's final, Harlequins, coached by Jedburgh's Chris Laidlaw, beat Shogun 28-7. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Melrose Sevens results MEN.
