Why St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson is 'concerned' by Killian Phillips form

The Republic of Ireland international has made a positive start to the new season. Stephen Robinson yesterday admitted in-form Killian Phillips could already be playing his way out of Paisley. The all-action midfielder bagged a brace as St Mirren beat Ayr United 2-1 to qualify for the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup as group winners. Phillips has been a revelation since arriving at the SMiSA Stadium — with last season's loan move from FA Cup winners Crystal Palace becoming permanent this summer. He landed a haul of player-of-the-year awards before becoming a full Republic of Ireland international when he came off the bench against Senegal and started at Luxembourg. Buddies boss Robinson knows the only way is up for the talented 23-year-old and he believes he will keep on getting better. 'If he keeps scoring goals that will be a real concern for us — but a good concern,' the gaffer said. 'He has continued on from where he left off last season with his form and energy. He is a driving force in the team. 'He is turning up with goals in big games and long may that continue. When you are training [internationally] with different players from different backgrounds who have different managers, it helps your education and learning process. 'But he is a very grounded, down-to-earth boy who gives absolutely everything for the football club and he will continue to grow. We will enjoy him while we can.' Robbo added: 'This is where we are as a football club — we put people on platforms. Killian didn't have loads of offers when he came to us but has grown as a boy and grown as a player. 'He will be the first to say the football club and coaching staff have been fantastic for him. He has snatched his chance and is an international footballer now. 'He will get attention but we don't need to sell. We haven't had any contact at the moment. When Killian leaves, it will be for good money and he will deserve his move. His trajectory is going to where we want it to go.' Saints didn't have it all their own way yesterday once Kevin Holt pulled a goal back for Ayr but it was a case of job done for Robbo. 'We felt Roland [Idowu] caused them problems and the game should have been dead and buried,' he added. 'But Ayr are a good side with a very good manager and we expected a response. 'We lost a goal from a set-play but we had numerous chances to finish the game off. If you don't do that, it makes it a little bit nervy. But we stood strong and managed the game okay. There were some very good performances.' Saints will face Hearts in the last 16 and Robbo said: 'To get through is good and to get a home draw is good. We will take the positives out of that. 'It could have been an easier draw than Hearts, of course, but I got to a cup final last time when we had to beat Hearts, Rangers and Aberdeen to get there so there's no reason why we can't do the same. 'We haven't done it so far [go deep in a domestic cup competition] but it certainly is our goal. We're potentially not going to win the league this season but there's always a chance in the cup. If you want to progress, you have to beat the better teams – and Hearts are one of the better teams.'

This drop in trip is no bad thing – he's a two-time course-and-distance winner – and he also drops in class. With the Jim Goldie stable in flying form, he has strong claims. 4.05 Ayr – Class 4 Handicap (1m 2f; Racing TV) The William Haggas-trained CROWN OF OAKS disappointed when 1/3 favourite for a Redcar maiden last time out, but he has since been gelded and now steps up in trip, and he was so promising on his first two starts that he still makes plenty of appeal on his handicap debut. It's fair to say the form of his reappearance at Newbury, where he finished third in a maiden, hasn't worked out. However, he went through that race like a good horse, shaping better than the bare result suggests, and he was entered in the 2,000 Guineas and the Dante at the time. Haggas had won the same Newbury maiden the previous year with the subsequent Irish Champion Stakes winner Economics, and in 2022 he won it with My Prospero, who went on to win a Group 2. Crown Of Oaks, a 260,000gns yearling, has an opening mark of 79, and he's a brother to English Oak whose peak official rating is 108. When is the next big racing festival? The week-long Galway Festival kicks off in Ireland today, and tomorrow it's Glorious Goodwood. Check out the latest Glorious Goodwood free bets and betting offers. The latter is a five-day fixture and is set to feature Field Of Gold, possibly the best horse in the world, in the Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, one of three Group 1 races at the meeting. What does NAP mean? NAP is a word used in betting circles to describe a prediction that a tipster thinks has a particularly strong chance of winning. Many horse racing tipsters pick out a 'NAP of the day', which is their favoured selection from all the races across the different meetings. The term derives from the French card game Napoleon. When players of this game thought they had a particularly strong hand that they would win with, they would shout 'Napoleon'. 'Huffing and puffing our way out of the group stage'

St Mirren fans, we asked for your views on Sunday's Premier Sports Cup win over Ayr United. Here's what some of you had to say:David: Huffing and puffing our way out of the group stage. Sure we are bedding in a lot of new players and the group format is nonsense but we desperately need a new striker and creative Stephen Robinson can try to paint a positive picture out of the matches, however the second half performance was extremely poor. I worry for both the left and right hand side of the defence, and that is two weeks in a row that we have conceded from a straightforward corner. Play like that second half and Celtic will walk over us next Sunday. Best described as "curate's egg" performance with more bad than good unfortunately!John: Can't argue with Scott Brown, we should have been out of sight by half time but well done to Ayr for their second half Any win in a cup tie is well deserved. Some fans should look back on previous so called easy ties and realise that getting into the next round is the main aim. Well done to the team and I was at the match and have been a St Mirren fan all my life, the first half we played well second half we eased off and credit to Ayr who deserved their goal. Here's to a good season ahead and we get top six again and are a bit more consistent.

Brown expects 'quality' from teenage Celtic duo

Scott Brown is expecting 19-year-old Celtic midfielders Jude Bonnar and Kyle Ure "to add quality" to his Ayr United side on loan this made his third appearance as the former Celtic midfielder's side lost 2-1 in their final Premier Sports Cup group game away to St Mirren on Brown credited the half-time substitute with helping turn the game in the Championship side's favour after going into the break two goals down to their top-flight hosts."The change of shape and personnel helped and I thought Jude coming into the middle of the park was exceptional and that helped us keep the ball - also a bit of urgency and aggresseness as well," he told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound."Coming from Celtic to come in and play for us like that, it looks like he's been part of this team for some time."Bonnar scored in his debut as a substitute in Ayr's opening 4-0 win over Arbroath and started their 3-0 defeat of Forfar Athletic, while Ure played the closing minutes in Paisley."Obviously, if you are good enough, you get game time and Jude so far has shown he's not out of his depth and he can probably push on again," Brown added. "Kyle we've not seen too much of just yet, but he was only just in training the other day and gets his minutes on the park today. "The two of them are fantastic footballers and it's another two lefties in the team and they have a good understanding of the game and they want to better themselves. "Hopefully they can get game time and, at the same time, add quality on the pitch."
