Health revolution: First Ayushman Arogya Mandir opens today
New Delhi: Delhi's first Ayushman Arogya Mandir is now ready to begin operations from the Tis Hazari Court complex. Previously functioning as a Mohalla Clinic, the facility has now been upgraded and redesigned to offer improved healthcare services under a new format. The official inauguration will take place on May 31, led by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The launch is part of a special event at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, marking the completion of 100 days of the current Delhi government. As part of the occasion, 33 new healthcare facilities will also be introduced. The newly developed Ayushman Arogya Mandir is equipped with several features that set it apart. It offers in-house diagnostic capabilities with 14 types of medical tests now available directly at the clinic. In addition to this, outsourced testing options will enable 79 more diagnostic tests to be accessed through the centre. The facility is also integrated with the National Immunisation Programme, making routine vaccinations available on-site. In addition to this, yoga sessions will be held every Monday and Friday, and comprehensive family planning services will be offered, including pre- and post-pregnancy care. The centre will operate daily from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., and will be staffed by a medical officer, a nurse, a multipurpose health worker, and a sanitation worker. Previously, the Mohalla Clinic at the site offered only basic doctor consultations, and most tests had to be done externally. Key services like vaccination were also unavailable. Now, under the new Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandir model, all essential health services are being brought under one roof. Local people are quite enthusiastic about the upcoming Arogya Mandir. The BJP government in Delhi has an ambitious plan to expand health services through these centres. This initiative by the Delhi government aims not only to enhance the quality of healthcare but also to make health services more accessible to the general public.

Inadequate diagnostic services still a critical gap in cancer care in India: NAMS report
One of the critical gaps in cancer care in India is the lack of adequate diagnostic services, finds the latest report by the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), an advisory body to the Central government for health policy and planning. India is recording nearly 200,000 new cancer cases each year, the report adds. The 'NAMS Task Force Report on Breast Cancer in India' published recently notes that the proportion of patients diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age is notably higher in India when compared with high income countries. Additionally, patients in India tend to present with later stage disease compared to the West. More than 60% of patients in India present at Stage 3 or 4, while around 60% of the patients in the U.S. are diagnosed in situ or at Stage 1. It adds that more than 50% of patients in India experience a delay of over three months before seeking medical care. In India, breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women, and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. NAMS established a task force to prepare a report addressing this critical issue, and said that there was an urgent need for a comprehensive approach to effectively manage the disease. Gaps in diagnostic services, treatment modalities, and lack of awareness are among the shortcomings in cancer care in India, the report said. 'Breast cancer is treatable when diagnosed in its early stages. In India the survival rate for patients with breast cancer is lower compared to Western countries due to several factors, including the late-stage presentation, delayed initiation of definitive management, and inadequate or fragmented treatment,'' the paper states. The NAMS's task force is also looking into developing guidelines for stakeholders involved in combating breast cancer across the Indian population. Experts note that middle income countries, including India, are expected to be largely responsible for the increase in cancer incidence worldwide over the next 50 years. 'Sixty percent of the global population resides in Asia, which accounts for 50% of cancer cases and 58% of cancer-related deaths. Furthermore, India ranks third in accounting for cancer cases, following China and the United States of America. The projected cancer burden in India is estimated to reach 2.08 million by 2040, representing a 57.5% increase from 2020,'' the paper states. The NAMS report also finds that the landscape of cancer care in India has seen significant advancements in treatment modalities and preventive measures. 'Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative currently has over 1,63,402 operational centres by the end of 2023. Within these centres, primary healthcare teams have conducted a staggering 10.04 crore breast cancer screenings, underscoring the programme's commitment to widespread outreach and accessibility,'' the report said.

1 2 3 New Delhi: The director general of health services (DGHS), Delhi, has been appointed to manage and implement the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) and Ayushman Arogya Mandir programmes under the National Health Mission (NHM) in the capital. A senior official said the move aims to improve the efficiency and execution of these key health initiatives, ensuring they meet their objectives. The DGHS will oversee planning, implementation, and monitoring, coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure smooth and effective delivery. An official order, issued on Wednesday, May 21 by the special secretary (health and family welfare), stated: "In compliance with the implementation requirements of PM-ABHIM and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs under NHM, DGHS shall be overall in charge for management and execution of programme components in Delhi. The order also designated all district medical officers (DMOs) as nodal officers for Ayushman Arogya Mandirs—including sub-centres and primary health centres (PHC)—in their respective districts. Officials explained that Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM) comprises two components: SCs and PHCs. Sub-centres function under PM-ABHIM, launched in 2021-22 with consolidated funding until 2026. Based on Delhi's population, the city requires 1,139 sub-centres. PHCs fall under the NHM, funded through a 60:40 cost-sharing model between the Centre and the state govt. Delhi requires 400 PHCs, of which 123 have been approved for the current financial year.
