Rampur DM's court cancels arms licences of Azam Khan's wife, son

The court of the Rampur district magistrate (DM) has cancelled the arms licences of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan's wife Dr Tazeen Fatima and son Abdullah Azam on the grounds of their criminal convictions. The decision comes amid a series of legal troubles for the influential political family from Rampur. The arms licences were cancelled on the basis of police reports. Government advocate Prem Kishore Pandey said a report for cancellation of arms licence against Dr Tazeen Fatima and Abdullah Azam was earlier given to the district magistrate by the Rampur superintendent of police on January 1, 2022 under Section 17 of the Arms Act. Azam Khan, a former minister, is currently lodged in Sitapur Jail. Dr Tazeen Fatima, a former Rajya Sabha MP, and former MLA Abdullah Azam are out on bail. All three had previously been convicted in a case related to Abdullah Azam possessing two birth certificates. The Rampur DM's court, after considering the ongoing criminal cases and the convictions, on Friday ordered the revocation of their .32 bore revolver licenses. This decision was the outcome of proceedings that began in 2022, following a recommendation by the police to cancel the trio's arms licences due to their involvement in criminal cases. According to official records, 108 criminal cases have been registered against Azam Khan. Out of these, 71 cases are still under trial, and he has been convicted in five. Dr Tazeen Fatima faces 44 pending cases. She was convicted in the dual birth certificate matter and sentenced to ten years in prison, though she remains out on bail. Abdullah Azam has 45 cases registered against him. He has been convicted in both the dual birth certificate case and a riot-related case by a Moradabad court. The DM's court cited these criminal records and convictions as the primary reason for the licence cancellations. In 2019, the administration revoked three arms licences held by Azam Khan after multiple criminal complaints surfaced. Khan had challenged the decision in the Allahabad high court, where he was granted temporary relief.

Deadly disease kills over 100 yaks in Pakistan's northern Shimshal pasture in Hunza

KHAPLU, Gilgit-Baltistan: Over 100 yaks have been killed after a mysterious disease broke out in the high-altitude pasture of Shimshal Pamir, local residents said on Wednesday, as officials confirmed the situation and said a medical team had been dispatched for rescue. Located at 3,100 meters above sea level, Shimshal is the highest settlement in Pakistan's northern Hunza region and the last village before the country's border with China. 'A disease broke out in the pasture of Shimshal and so far more than 100 yaks were killed,' Azam Khan, the general secretary of the Shimshal Nature Trust (SNT), a community representative organization in the valley, told Arab News over the phone. 'Many yaks are ill,' he continued. 'We farmers are facing huge economic losses. My two young yaks, worth Rs400,000 [$1,423], were also killed due to this disease.' 'Shimshal valley is home to more than 1,600 people,' he continued. 'We rely on tourism and livestock farming to make ends meet. Yak raising is a favorite and profitable hobby for our villagers.' Khan urged the government to take immediate measures to save the animals. Naimat Karim, another farmer from the valley, said three of his yaks were killed by the disease. 'Agriculture and livestock farming are our profession. Out of five yaks, I have lost three … This is a financial setback,' he added. Khuzaima Anwar, the deputy commissioner for Hunza district, confirmed the development, saying a veterinary medical team had been dispatched to the area. 'Our team is on its way to the Shimshal pasture,' he said. 'They will diagnose the disease and treat the animals. Once the medical team returns, we will be in a better position to explain the situation.' Speaking to Arab News, Dr. Shehzad Arif, a deputy director at the Gilgit-Baltistan Livestock and Dairy Development Department, said it would take at least three days for the team to reach the Shimshal pastures. 'We received information from the local community on May 5 about the death of yaks in the high-altitude pasture,' he said. 'So we formed a team and dispatched them with essential medicines to the area the next day.' 'As far as our information goes, 108 yaks have died in the valley while 80 are ill,' he added. He refused to speculate about the disease, saying the team would provide more accurate information. 'Yak is the backbone of the economy for the people living in the Karakorum-Himalaya mountain ranges of Gilgit-Baltistan,' Shakoor Ali, head of the Zoology Department at Public School Skardu, told Arab News. 'Yak is rightly known as the coconut of animals, as it provides food in the form of milk and meat, clothing from its hides and wool, and shelter from the tents made out of its hair. Almost all parts of the yak's body have cultural, economic, medicinal, and religious value,' he continued, adding that Shimshal valley herders would face immense livelihood challenges without them.

Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan gets relief in ₹20-crore cess case

Granting relief to senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan, the court of Moradabad divisional commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh on Friday overturned an earlier order that demanded a ₹20-crore cess from the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University Trust, headed by Khan, a senior administrative official confirmed. The earlier order was passed by the Rampur assistant labour commissioner. Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan is currently incarcerated in Sitapur jail on various charges. The case stems from a 2018 order by the Rampur assistant labour commissioner, which assessed the construction cost of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur at ₹2,000 crore. Based on this valuation, a 1% cess amounting to ₹20 crore was imposed on the trust under the Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Cess Act, 1996. The cess was intended to fund welfare schemes for construction workers. However, Khan and his legal team contested the order, arguing that the valuation was inflated and the imposition of the cess was unjustified. Azam Khan filed an appeal against the assistant labour commissioner's order, which was heard by the Moradabad divisional commissioner. After reviewing the arguments, the commissioner ruled in favour of Khan, declaring the earlier order null and void. The court found merit in Khan's contention that the assessment of the university's construction cost was not adequately substantiated, rendering the cess demand invalid. Reacting to the verdict, a lawyer representing Khan expressed relief, stating that the decision vindicates his stance against what they describe as 'politically motivated' actions. The Mohammad Ali Jauhar University was established by Khan in 2006 in Rampur. The institution has often been at the centre of controversies over allegations of land encroachment, financial irregularities, and misuse of power..
