Malaysia targets ports to adopt B20 biodiesel in drive toward net-zero emissions

SEPANG, May 29 — The government is targeting all ports nationwide currently using B10 palm-based biodiesel in their operations to transition to B20 biodiesel, said Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Johari said the initiative would support the country's efforts to meet its goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity based on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 45 per cent by 2030 and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. 'In the future, I want to see every port, like Penang Port, Port Klang, Tanjung Pelepas Port, Johor Port and Kuantan Port, start using B20 biodiesel in their operations. 'We are currently collecting statistics, and based on that data, we will be able to determine the operational costs involved,' he told reporters after launching the B20 Use Pilot Project for Ground Service Vehicles and Machinery at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here today. He said the government had already begun pilot projects for the use of B20 biodiesel in Langkawi, Labuan and Sarawak in 2020 and now at KLIA for ground service vehicles and machinery to create a big impact and be a catalyst for national change in the use of green energy. Johari said the initiative not only supports Malaysia's transition toward sustainable energy but alsod the initiative not only supports Malaysia's transition toward sustainable energy but also strengthens the country's position as the world's second largest producer of palm oil, which is committed to responsible and proactive practices. 'This is one of the government's key initiatives because we've made a commitment to the world that we intend to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,' he said. According to Johari, the project is being implemented through a strategic collaboration between the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Petronas Dagangan Bhd, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and Syarikat Teras Kembang Sdn Bhd. He said Petronas Dagangan Bhd serves as the B20 biodiesel supplier, MAHB as the airport operator, while Syarikat Teras Kembang Sdn Bhd manages the petrol stations supplying B20 to operators of ground service vehicles and machinery at KLIA. 'This launch is a historic milestone as it marks the first time B20 biodiesel has been introduced for the ground service sector or the industrial sector at airports in Malaysia,' he said. B20 is a blend of 20 per cent palm methyl ester (PME) and 80 per cent petroleum diesel. Its use is seen as contributing to sustainability and reducing the use of fossil-based fuels, as well as reducing the use of GHGs that cause global warming. — Bernama

NVIDIA, AMD may soon start selling new AI chips in China to comply with US restrictions

To comply with the U.S.' restrictions on exporting advanced semiconductor technology to China, chipmakers NVIDIA and AMD will soon begin selling new GPUs made for AI workloads in China, Taiwanese tech publication Digitimes reported, citing supply chain sources. NVIDIA plans to sell a stripped-down AI GPU, code-named "B20," while AMD is looking to target AI workload needs with its new Radeon AI PRO R9700 workstation GPU, Digitimes reported, adding that the companies will likely start selling these AI chips in China from July. Earlier this week, Reuters reported that NVIDIA is working on a new budget AI chip built on its Blackwell architecture for China that is expected to be priced at $6,500-$8,000. In comparison, the company sells its H20 GPUs for $10,000-$12,000 each. NVIDIA on Wednesday said it had incurred a $4.5 billion charge in Q1 due to licensing requirements impacting its ability to sell its H20 AI chip to companies in China, and it couldn't ship an additional $2.5 billion of H20 chips in the quarter due to the restrictions. The company forecast that licensing requirements would result in an $8 billion hit to the company's revenue in Q2.

QUIZ | Test your B20 knowledge with this 2-minute survey – AND WIN R2 000! Dear B20 South Africa friends and stakeholders, As we move forward in our B20 South Africa journey, I am pleased to share key updates on our collective efforts to shape actionable, inclusive and sustainable policy recommendations for the G20. All eight B20 Task Forces have now commenced their intensive collaboration, bringing together global expertise to develop concrete policy proposals ahead of our November summit. Their work is critical to ensuring that business voices translate into meaningful, measurable outcomes, ones that balance economic growth with societal development and environmental resilience. We are delighted to confirm that the B20 South Africa Summit will take place from 18-20 November 2025 in Johannesburg. This will be a pivotal moment to convene our global community, share insights, and drive forward recommendations that reflect both African priorities and global imperatives. I am pleased to welcome the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), MTN and Kwikot as new partners in our work to host Africa's first B20. Their commitment reinforces the collaborative spirit of all our sponsors needed to address the complex challenges ahead. As I have emphasised before, sustainable business is not just what we do, it is how we do it. Our values matter. The policy recommendations must be rooted in inclusion, resilience and long-term thinking. This means creating pathways for all regions, particularly those facing structural constraints, to fully participate in and benefit from global growth. Africa's role in this future is vital. A truly sustainable future must be shaped by the collective and grounded in shared prosperity. • G20 Sherpa Meeting – June 2025 • Virtual Press Roundtables with Task Forces – June 2025 • Fourth Financing for Development Conference (FfD4) – June 2025 Africa's potential is undeniable, but potential alone is not enough. Our goal is to shift the narrative from aspiration to measurable progress, progress that benefits people, economies and the planet. The world does not just need Africa's potential, it needs Africa's leadership. All of us in the B20 South African community look forward to your continued partnership as we build toward November. Together, we can forge policies and ways of doing business that drive inclusive growth and prove that sustainability and shared prosperity go hand in hand, in a cooperating world. B20 Task Forces are the strategic engines of B20 South Africa, responsible for developing business-driven, actionable policy recommendations to be presented to the Group of 20 (G20), which South Africa leads until November 2025. 'Its focus is to bring about concrete policies that will bring about wider internet access and digital inclusion, enabling developing nations in Africa and beyond to narrow the gap with technology powerhouses like the US and China,' Mahanyele-Dabengwa said. 'This G20 Presidency under South Africa's leadership is the perfect moment to take action – to guide the technological revolution in a way that broadens access to opportunity, protects human rights and dignity, and ensures that no country or community is excluded from the digital future,' she added. Mahanyele-Dabengwa is renowned for her groundbreaking role as the first Black woman CEO of Naspers South Africa, a position she has held since 2019. Her journey from Soweto to the helm of one of Africa's largest tech and media groups epitomises resilience, vision, and transformative leadership. Born in 1971 in Meadowlands, Soweto, Mahanyele-Dabengwa's early life was marked by frequent relocations, including stints in Durban, Lesotho and various parts of Johannesburg. In 2008, she completed an executive programme at Harvard's Kennedy School. Mahanyele-Dabengwa's career started at Fieldstone Private Capital Group in New York City, where she specialised in infrastructure finance, eventually becoming vice-president of its South Africa office. When she returned to South Africa, she led the project finance department at the Development Bank of Southern Africa, before joining Cyril Ramaphosa's Shanduka Group in 2004. As CEO, she steered Shanduka to securing deals with global brands like Coca-Cola and McDonald's South Africa. In 2015, she co-founded Sigma Capital, an investment holding company, before catching the attention of Naspers, leading to her historic appointment as CEO of Naspers South Africa. Under her tenure, Naspers has helped grow the South African tech ecosystem through early-stage tech investment startup unit Naspers Foundry, which invested and supported high-growth local startups. Naspers continues to invest in its leading lifestyle e-commerce subsidiary companies Property24, AutoTrader, Mr D Food and media group, Media24. Mahanyele-Dabengwa serves on several boards, including Vodacom, and she is also an executive director of the Naspers and Prosus boards.
