Second victim in Noida BMW crash dies; accused granted bail

An 18-year-old man who was critically injured in an accident involving a speeding BMW, reportedly being driven by a drunk man, and a scooter in Noida's Sector 30 early Sunday succumbed to his injuries after nearly a day of treatment at a Ghaziabad hospital, police and family members said. Raja, the 18-year-old deceased. (HT Photos) Raja, a resident of Sadarpur in Sector 45, was returning home with his brother-in-law Gul Mohammad and five-year-old niece Ayat Khatun after visiting a doctor at the Post Graduate Institute of Child Health (Child PGI), when their Honda Activa was hit head-on by a BMW around 12.20am on Sunday. The impact of the collision dragged the scooter nearly 200 metres, police and eyewitnesses said, adding that Gul Mohammad had exited from Gate No. 3 and was riding on the wrong side to take a nearby U-turn when the crash occurred. Ayat died on the spot, while Gul Mohammed and Raja were rushed to separate hospitals with serious injuries. Raja sustained multiple fractures in his legs, hands and head, and remained unconscious until he died late Sunday night. 'Doctors told us he fractured his skull and had internal bleeding in the brain. He never regained consciousness,' said his brother Mohammad Masoon Ali. Ali added, 'We shifted Gul Mohammed to a private hospital in Sector 39 on Monday and have spent ₹3.5 lakh on his treatment so far, without any financial assistance. Now we've been told the accused have already secured bail.' The BMW, being driven by Yash Sharma (23), a BBA graduate from Sector 37, had fled the spot after the collision, leaving the injured people behind. Police said Sharma and his co-passenger Abhishek Rawat (22), an MBA student from Sector 70, were found to be in an inebriated state when tracked down. They were both arrested on Sunday and granted bail by a Surajpur court on Monday. 'There is no separate section under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for drunk driving; it is addressed under the Motor Vehicle Act,' said Additional DCP Noida, Sumit Shukla. The FIR filed at Sector 20 police station includes BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 125 (act endangering life), and 106(1) (causing death by negligence). When asked why the co-passenger was arrested, Shukla said Rawat also fled the scene and was intoxicated, which contributed to the police action. 'Medical reports confirmed both were under the influence of alcohol,' he said, adding that in the charge-sheet, sections related to their individual roles would be separated. The BMW involved in the accident belongs to Sharma's associate, Gagandeep Singh. Sharma had reportedly taken the vehicle four days earlier with the intention of selling it. On the night of the incident, he had consumed alcohol with friends in Sector 37 before heading towards the Elevated Road, police said. Police said investigations are ongoing and the chargesheet will include all relevant findings, including the role of both accused and the outcome of the forensic and medical reports.

Three attempt self-immolation alleging ‘job fraud'

Trichy: Tension prevailed outside the district collectorate on Monday after three members of a family attempted self-immolation, alleging fraud by a woman who promised a job abroad for their son. K Selvaraj, 52, his wife S Selvi, 42, and her brother Saravanakumar V, 31, poured kerosene on themselves but were stopped by police before they could set fire. The family later submitted a petition to district collector V Saravanan. According to the petition, Selvaraj's son S Gopinath, 22, a BBA graduate from Namakkal, had been job-hunting since 2023. He claimed that a neighbour, Puneetha Rosy Malar, introduced herself as an agent who had helped over 1,000 people secure jobs abroad and offered to arrange a legal work visa for Poland. Gopinath said he paid her ₹3.3 lakh in instalments over two years. "She kept delaying, giving various excuses, and once even claimed the visa was ready, asking for an additional payment," he said. The family approached Thottiyam police after submitting a petition at the SP office. A police-mediated meeting led to the recovery of ₹25,000 on May 30. However, Gopinath alleged that police had not followed up since. After Monday's incident, the family was referred to the Court Police Station, where officials assured them the case would be investigated.

Scindia, Pemmasani review BSNL's operational progress, 4G roll out

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia and Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani on Monday reviewed the operational progress of state-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ) and outlined its strategy for network expansion and service delivery. To this extent, the senior ministers, along with Department of Telecommunications (DoT) officials, held extensive high-level meetings with BSNL's circle chief general managers (CGMs). Scindia noted that the meeting focused on strengthening BSNL's role in the telecom sector, accelerating infrastructure rollout, and enhancing citizen-centric service delivery, according to an official statement. During the meeting, BSNL's circle heads were aligned on several priority areas, including reconnecting with customers across rural, urban, enterprise and retail segments; enhancing service quality in mobile networks and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) segments; addressing customer grievances in billing, provisioning, and network uptime; and driving accountability with 'revenue-first' targets at every operational level. The telecom carrier's top executives have also been tasked with expanding enterprise services, such as connectivity, virtual private network (VPN) solutions, leased-line services, and other new business opportunities. This comes at a time when BSNL is bolstering its 4G mobile network and services to compete strongly with its private sector rivals Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), which have a nationwide 4G network and also offer commercial fifth-generation (5G)-driven services. Scindia 'appreciated BSNL's efforts and stressed the importance of achieving measurable improvements' in customer experience and revenue generation, according to the statement. As part of the review, BSNL executives highlighted key new initiatives, including 4G expansion in multiple circles; launch of IFTV for FTTH and BiTV for mobile customers; BSNL national Wi-Fi roaming; tailored VPN services and bundled packages for enterprise and government clients; captive non-public network (CNPN) initiatives for high-reliability connectivity in mission-critical infrastructure; and a spam-free network. BSNL also launched an online portal – BSNL Business Associate (BBA) – to enable youth to engage with the BSNL sales channel strengthening and earn sales commissions.

Drunk Noida driver hits scooter, 5-year-old killed

Noida: A five-year-old girl was killed and her father and uncle critically injured in a hit-and-run accident involving a speeding BMW and a Honda Activa scooter near Sector 30, Noida, in the early hours of Sunday, according to police. The deceased, identified by police as Ayat Khatun (5), was returning from the Post Graduate Institute of Child Health with her father.(Sunil Ghosh / Hindustan Times) Police and eyewitnesses said that the scooter was travelling on the wrong side of the road, while the BMW was speeding. A preliminary investigation suggested both suspects, the driver of the car Yash Sharma, 22, a BBA graduate from Noida Sector 37, and co-passenger Abhishek Rawat, 22, an MBA student from Sector 70, had consumed alcohol prior to the accident. The collision's impact caused the scooter to skid for around 200 metres, even as none of the victims wore helmets at the time, police added. The deceased, identified by police as Ayat Khatun, was returning from the Post Graduate Institute of Child Health with her father, Gul Mohammad, 37, and uncle Raja, 18, — all residents of Sector 45 in Noida — after seeking medical care for Ayat's ear pain. A little after 12am, as their scooter exited the hospital, it was struck head-on by a Haryana-registered BMW, allegedly driven by Sharma, police said. 'Sharma recently started dealing in the sales and purchase of vehicles with his associate Gagandeep Singh, who owns the BMW. Sharma took the keys of the BMW around four days ago to sell the Haryana-registered 2016 model car,' said Noida assistant commissioner of police Praveen Singh. Rahul Kumar, who runs a tea stall outside the hospital, said that the victims exited the hospital on the scooter. 'They rode on the wrong side to approach a nearby U-turn which was 200 metres away. The speeding car was approaching from Sector 37 and hit the scooter from the front,' said Kumar, an eyewitness. Police received an emergency call at 12.15am and a Police Response Vehicle (PRV) reached the spot. The injured were rushed to a private hospital in Sector 27, but the child was declared dead on arrival. Mohammad, who sustained a severe facial injury, was riding the scooter, while Raja, who sustained multiple fractures on his leg, hand, and head, was riding pillion. The child was sitting between them, police said. An officer involved in the investigation said that Sharma and Rawat consumed alcohol at Sharma's home on Saturday night. 'They were on a joyride and were headed towards the elevated road,' the officer said, asking not to be named. 'Following the accident, they fled the spot and returned to Sharma's house and informed Gagandeep Singh about the accident, who had also been contacted by police,' the officer added. Sharma and Rawat then parted ways, police said. The number plate of the car had broken and fallen on the road, which helped police trace the owner. A second officer aware of the matter said that Singh was told by police to get in touch with the two suspects and bring them to Noida Sector 20 to 'settle the matter'. 'When Sharma and Rawat arrived, they were arrested around 4am,' the officer said, also asking not to be named. Mohammad's second brother-in-law, Mohammad Masoom Ali, said the victims had left home around 11pm for the hospital as Ayat was complaining of ear pain. 'Around an hour-and-a-half later, we received a call from police who told us that my brother-in-law had met with an accident and was admitted to a hospital in Sector 27. We were told that Ayat had died,' Ali told HT. On the complaint of Gul Mohammad's brother, Peer Mohammad Ansari, A case under sections 281 (rash driving), 125 (act endangering life), and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Sector 20 police station. Ayat lived with her parents and two siblings in the Sadarpur area of Sector 45. The family is originally from Sitamarhi in Bihar. Police said the car was seized and medical reports confirmed that the suspects were inebriated when the accident took place.
