Italy celebrates first Wimbledon singles winner after Jannik Sinner success
New Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner was congratulated by the Italian prime minister after his Centre Court win over Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner, the world number one, dethroned two-time defending champion Alcaraz with a 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory to become the first winner, male or female, from Italy. Prime minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X: 'Another page of history for Italian sport: Un'altra pagina di storia per lo sport italiano: Jannik Sinner trionfa a Wimbledon e fa sognare un'intera Nazione. Orgogliosi di te, campione! — Giorgia Meloni (@GiorgiaMeloni) July 13, 2025 'Jannik Sinner triumphs at Wimbledon and makes an entire nation dream. Proud of you, champion!' A first Wimbledon title was sweet revenge for the 23-year-old, who lost an epic five-setter to Alcaraz in the French Open final lust last month. Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, commentating on BBC 5 Live, said: 'It's so rightly deserved. 'To be able to come back from that, play another grand slam final against the same opponent and be in the same situation, serving for the match and pull out the game he has put together – I can't imagine what they've been going through until this final.' Australian Pat Cash, the 1987 champion, felt Sinner's gameplan worked to perfection. 'A great performance. Just great serving, nullifying the drop shots of Alcaraz,' said the BBC pundit. What a winner from Carlos Alcaraz for the first set! 🔥👉👂 Incredible entertainment here at SW19 💫 #Wimbledon — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) July 13, 2025 'Alcaraz was below par on his serve and that made a big difference.' Alcaraz's stunning shot to take the first set, a flicked backhand cross-court winner on the stretch, had former British number one Tim Henman purring. 'That was a moment of magic,' he said. 'Such a great rally at set point, the control of the racket face from Alcaraz to direct a winner from that position. There is no one else who has that athletic ability.' Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal posted on his Instagram story: 'Congratulations Jannik Sinner. Special moments!

Carlos Alcaraz makes big admission after Wimbledon final loss to Jannik Sinner
Carlos Alcaraz admits he lost 'focus' during his Wimbledon final defeat to Jannik Sinner after being called out for a lack of concentration. Alcaraz won the first set against his rival on Sunday – before Sinner came out on top in the next three to land his first trophy at the All England Club. The Spaniard was attempting to become the first man to win his first six Grand Slam finals since Roger Federer in 2005 but fell short in the end. During the match, at the start of the third set, Todd Woodbridge highlighted Alcaraz's 'wavering' concentration levels while on BBC commentary duties. In his post-match press conference, Wimbledon runner-up Alcaraz said: '[Sinner] was pushing me to the limit with every point. 'So mentally, sometimes, it's really tough to maintain good focus or a good level during the whole match when you see the opponent just playing such great tennis. 'At some points I didn't know what I had to do in the match because from the baseline I was feeling he was better than me, and I couldn't do anything about it.' Alcaraz, who won Wimbledon back-to-back in 2023 and 2024, also admits he was struggling with 'nerves' during his showdown with rival Sinner. 'I mean, today was complicated a little bit,' Alcaraz added. 'You know, low percentage of first serve. Then I played against one of the best returner on tour, without a doubt. 'It was a weapon that I wish it could be better, but today it was… I mean, with the nerves and everything, it was difficult to serve better. I just have to improve that, yeah, absolutely.' Alcaraz is 'sad' about losing the Wimbledon final and being denied three titles in a row – but the 22-year-old world No.2, a five-time major champion, says he is leaving south west London with his 'head really high'. 'It's always a bad feeling losing matches,' Alcaraz continued. 'I think it's a little bit even worse when you lose in a final. 'Overall I'm just really proud about everything I've done, the last four weeks on grass here in London. 'I just leave Wimbledon, I just left the court with the head really, really, really high because that I just did everything that I could today. 'Just I played against someone who played an unbelievable game. So just a little bit sad about losing, but with the head really high.' Muhammadu Buhari, former Nigerian President, dies at 82 in London
Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82 years in a London clinic, PTI quoted his press secretary as saying on Sunday. Prior to his death, he was receiving medical treatment in London. "President Buhari died today in London at about 4:30 p.m. (1530 GMT), following a prolonged illness," President Bola Tinubu's spokesperson said in a post on X. Buhari had previously led Nigeria twice as a military head of state and a democratic president. He was the first president to defeat a sitting president after he was elected in 2015. Born in December 1942 in Daura in Katsina state in the far north of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari was admitted to the Nigerian Military Training College soon after leaving school. He joined the Nigerian army shortly after independence. He undertook officer training in the UK from 1962-1963 and climbed up the ranks. He became a military commander by 1978, and by 1983, he became the country's military ruler after a coup, against elected President Shehu Shagari. Though he claimed he was not one of the plotters but was installed by those who held the real power and needed a figurehead, reported BBC. Muhammadu Buhari was never considered a natural politician, but a self-styled converted democrat. Burari achieved a historic victory in 2015 after three failed attempts and became the country's first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent President. He was re-elected for another four-year term in 2019. Always popular among the poor of the north, however, Burari also had the advantage of a united opposition grouping behind him for his 2015 campaign. Burari united people to fight against the Islamist insurgency in the north. He had promised to tackle corruption and nepotism in government, and create employment opportunities for young Nigerians at that time.

Line of Duty star's 'challenging' new BBC drama gets exciting update
Praised by critics for addressing one of the most important issues of our time, Jimmy McGovern's latest series has been hotly anticipated by viewers. The Time writer is no stranger to taking difficult topics and unpacking them in an engaging manner to audiences. Whether it was Sean Bean's character going into prison for drunk driving or a priest dealing with his childhood trauma in Broken, the writer has earned a loyal fanbase. And ahead of the release of Unforgiveable airing on BBC, the excitement around his work certainly does not seem to be dying. Now, however, fans can expect to get even more excited after an exciting update was revealed. Starring Bobby Schofield as Joe and Line of Duty's Anna Maxwell Martin as Katherine, an ex-nun and therapist working at St Maura's, the series features an all-star cast. The first trailer for the series shows us Joe, a man who has served his prison sentence after committing an act of abuse, having a therapy session with Katherine. After being released, he also has to come face to face with his family once again. A description of the series reads: 'The Mitchell family deal with the devastating aftermath of an act of sexual abuse committed by a member of their own family who, after two years, is about to leave prison.' But, in an exciting update, we now know exactly when the series is going to air. Following an announcement from the BBC, all three episodes will be released on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Thursday July 24. The first episode will then also air on the same day from 9pm. When the cast for the series was first confirmed, McGovern told Radio Times: 'I can't believe the cast and crew that have been assembled for this production. It's a challenging film, yes, but I can't wait for it to be shown.' This comes after Netflix added all four episodes of a 'gripping' spy thriller starring another Line of Duty star. More Trending The drama centres around Verloc, the owner of a smutty Soho sex shop, who has a side hustle on the go as an informer for the Russian embassy, keeping tabs on a group of anarchists in the capital – whose aims are to 'attack the rich!' The cast is a real who's who of British acting talent, with Toby Jones heading up the show as Verloc and Vicky McClure playing his wife Winnie. To round out the top of the call sheet, Stephen Graham joins them as the police Chief Inspector Heat.
