Fire crews tackle gorse blaze in Torquay
Fire crews have tackled a gorse blaze in Torquay, Devon. Crews from the town and Paignton responded after they received multiple calls about the fire on Rock End Avenue, in the Wellswood area. About 20 sq m of gorse on the cliff was damaged by the blaze, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said. They used one jet and portable lighting to tackle the blaze. Man in 40s killed in Plymouth crash
A man in his 40s has died following a crash in Plymouth. The incident involved a white Renault Master on Southway Lane on Wednesday at about 14:30 BST. Devon and Cornwall rain warning brought forward
A yellow weather warning for heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms in Cornwall, Devon and the Isles of Scilly has been brought forward by the Met Office. The updated yellow warning is now expected between 18:00 BST on Saturday until 21:00 on Sunday. The original warning was in place from 12:00 on Sunday until 03:00 on Monday. The Met Office said 30 to 50 mm (1.18 to 1.97 inches) of rain may fall in a few hours and there was a small chance that a few spots could see 75 mm (2.95 inches) or more. The Met Office said there was a small chance of power cuts, flooding and loss of services to homes and businesses. It added: "Outbreaks of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect south-west England from Saturday evening. Main road temporarily closes due to wildfire smoke
Smoke from a wildfire in a field forced the temporary closure of a main road near Okehampton in Devon. The eastbound carriageway of the A30 was closed between the A382 junction at Whiddon Down to Woodleigh Junction at Cheriton Bishop, traffic website Inrix reported. Authorities reported thick smoke from the blaze was drifting across the road, creating hazardous driving conditions. National Highways said on X both carriageways had since been reopened and thanked drivers for their patience. Police car wedged on hedge after leaving road
A police car came to an abrupt halt on top of a hedge after careering off the road. The car ended up perched on the hedge on the B3392 near St Ann's Chapel in south Devon at about 12:30 BST. No injuries were reported in the single vehicle incident, said Devon and Cornwall Police. The road was closed for a time to allow for the car to be recovered and was reopened at about 14:45 BST.
