BBC's new crime drama breaks record despite viewers 'switching off'
Death Valley - which stars Gwyneth Keyworth and Timothy Spall - launched on BBC One over the weekend with the first of six episodes of the new comedy-drama series The BBC has announced the viewing figures for its new comedy-drama Death Valley following the launch of the show on the weekend. It comes following a mixed reaction from some viewers over the recently-aired first episode. The six-part series set in Wales follows detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (played by Gwyneth Keyworth) and retired actor John Chapel (Timothy Spall), who team up to solve crimes. The show is written and created by Paul Doolan, whose previous work includes the Sky One sitcom Trollied. Death Valley - which has drawn comparisons Ludwig and Death in Paradise - launched just days ago, with its first episode having aired on BBC One on Sunday night. It's set to continue on the channel this weekend, though all six episodes are already available through BBC iPlayer. It has now been announced by the BBC that Death Valley's launch - which aired from 8.15pm to 9pm - drew an audience of 2.9 million on BBC One, with it achieving the largest Overnights audience for a new BBC Scripted Comedy title in five years. It adds that it outperformed Ludwig's premiere in September last year, which attracted 2.8 million viewers. The show - which includes Gavin and Stacey stars Steffan Rhodri and Melanie Walters among its cast - centres on the "unlikely crime-solving partnership" between retired actor John, who played a fictional detective, and police officer Janie. It's teased in a synopsis: "They'd make the perfect crime-fighting duo - if only they could get along!" There was a mixed reaction on X to the first episode, despite the news this week that the debut was a ratings success. Some people even shared that they were turning Death Valley off just minutes into the premiere. One person wrote: "5 mins & switching off - this is AWEFUL soooooo baaad." Another said: "Had to turn over." Someone else commented: "I only lasted 10 mins." Others similarly weren't impressed by the new TV show. Someone said: "Ten minutes unintelligible thanks." Another viewer wrote: "Just sat and watched the biggest heap of s***e ever and it's called #DeathValley that's 45 minutes of life I ain't getting back." And sharing their thoughts, one person wrote recently: "Shame #DeathValley had good potential. But it's so cringeworthy. Can't believe it was considered good Sunday night viewing. Can't wait for #Ludwig series 2!!!" Not everyone was unimpressed though. A number of viewers have shared that like Death Valley so far. One fan said: "I really enjoyed that. Hilarious! Policing at its finest! #DeathValley. Well done all involved!:) I howled all the way through!" Another said on the platform: "Not everyone's cup of tea but I loved #DeathValley. Quirky but most enjoyable, acting was superb by both lead actors. Full marks to all involved in this series - looking forward to more. Well done #BBC." A third wrote: "#DeathValley is absolutely excellent. Getting the blend of comedy & drama right is very difficult - but the team have done it here. It can build a following. The brilliant Brokenwood Mysteries from NZ is now in its 11th season. #DeathValley can follow a similar trajectory." Sharing their thoughts in a post recently, another viewer said: "#deathvalley really enjoying the show. Easy going murder mystery. Think Death in Paradise but in Llandeilo. Nice to hear genuine Welsh accents on TV. Tidy." Death Valley continues on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday night from 8.15pm. All episodes are available on the streaming platform now.

Avani gets the upper hand in EastEnders as Joel's twisted plan backfires
Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) gets her own back on wicked Joel Marshall (Max Murray) in EastEnders next week. As viewers of the BBC One soap have seen, the teen has been receiving vicious online comments from her peers, after they discovered she lost her virginity. Poor Avani has been through quite a lot in the last six months – from her grandfather attempting to kill his ex-wife and her new spouse, to being strip searched at the police station. In the aftermath, she's turned to a life of drink and drugs and formed a troubling relationship with newcomer Joel. Little did she realise, he had secretly recorded their dalliance and shown his friend Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall). His dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) found the footage, and ordered Joel to delete it – but he didn't. It soon transpired that it was this behaviour that had sparked their move to Walford from Australia, after he upskirted a girl in his class. Luckily for Avani, her old pal Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) – who is harbouring his true feelings for her – is on hand to support her. The two will kiss in this week's episodes, but in upcoming scenes, things begin to change. In the thick of the drama, Barney spectacularly puts his foot in it with Avani,as she tries to support him following a difficult time in the Mitchell household. Not long after, things go from bad to worse when her mum Priya (Sophie Khan-Levy) intervenes, and coldly brushes off his attempt at a remorseful olive branch. EastEnders Zack Hudson's fate teased after crash horror as actor speaks out
EastEnders viewers were left wondering who would survive a crash involving Zack Hudson and Teddy Mitchell on the BBC soap this week, but is Zack leaving in the stunt? Zack Hudson's fate remains up in the air on EastEnders after a crash with Teddy Mitchell on the BBC soap this week. Tuesday's dramatic episode saw Zack and Teddy veer off the road in the car they were in, crashing into a lake below. As the car sank it remained unknown if anyone would survive the incident and what would happen next. On Wednesday the fallout was revealed, with the episode dropping early on BBC iPlayer ahead of it airing on BBC One at 7:30PM. Viewers had big questions before tuning in, wondering if Zack was set to die and if actor James Farrar would be leaving the role. Fans who have now watched Wednesday's episode of the show know a twist has been confirmed. It's certainly sparked a reaction online with viewers sharing their thoughts and even some theories about the future. Warning, the rest of this article contains spoilers from the episode available to watch on iPlayer now. If you want to avoid details until Wednesday evening, do not continue! Tuesday's episode had ended with concern for Zack, as Teddy lost control of the car and sped off the bridge into the water. Teddy had just stopped his son Harry Mitchell from doing anything to Zack, after he kidnapped him, attacked him and put him in the boot of his car. As Wednesday night's episode unfolded we soon learned the fate of Teddy. Those also at the scene panicked as they tried to figure out what had gone down, and where Zack and Teddy were. We also learned Zack's apparent fate after it was revealed he could not be found. With that, the others left the scene and soon residents were told Zack had likely drowned and was presumed dead. Nicola Mitchell seemed happy with this after the drama with Zack over Barney's paternity. As the episode came to a sad end there was a confrontation, as someone declared Zack had been killed. But is Zack really dead and has he left the show for good? Amid speculation from fans over the character's true fate, the actor who plays him did tease a shock death could happen. Speaking on This Morning on Tuesday, Zack actor James and his co-star Laura Doddington hinted an exit could be on the way. "Are you going to get out alive?" Sharon Marshall questioned. James didn't deny it, and he then shrugged his shoulders and quietly said "We'll see." Could this mean an exit for the star? Sharon teased: "It might be your last Soap Awards! You might be up for best exit next year." Last week, eagle eyed fans noticed that the EastEnders YouTube page posted a video titled "The Dramatic Journey of Zack Hudson," and some thought it meant a bad omen for the character. "Does anyone else see this video as a bad omen for Zack?" one viewer questioned, as another agreed: "yeah I thought that too." "So is this a hint that he'll be dying in the car crash?" questioned another fan, while a fourth said: "Well this confirms Zack's death!" Meanwhile last October, James teased a big storyline to The Mirror for Zack. James could barely contain his excitement as he remained coy over the details of the mystery plot. He told us: "There is something really exciting coming up next year that nobody really knows about yet. It keeps me going into work every day going…. I'm buzzing for it to start. It is just starting around now."
