Make Kurmali language regional and include it in BBMKU syllabi: Students

Social workers and local leaders also joined and showed solidarity with the students. The march began with a gathering at BBM College, where student leaders addressed the crowd, highlighting the Kurmali language's importance towards bringing regional unity and giving a distinct cultural identity. Leading the procession, student leader Yugdeo Mahtha strongly criticised the university administration for allegedly ignoring the students' other demands. "Since its establishment in 2017, BBMKU has not conducted student elections. This shows the administration's apathy towards the students' concerns," Mahtha said, addressing the protestors on the university campus. "Kurmali is not just a language, it is our identity. It must be treated equally like other regional languages and included in the curriculum without delay," he said. The students also submitted a memorandum of their demands to the vice-chancellor's office though the officer was not present. Their primary demand is the introduction of PG courses in Kurmali as well as their inclusion in the B Ed curriculum. The protesters emphasised that promoting Kurmali in academics would not only preserve the language but also create employment opportunities for the Kurmali speakers across the state. "Thousands of Kurmali-speaking people live in Jharkhand. By including it in the syllabi, the state can ensure better representation and jobs for the native speakers," said Priyanka Kumari, one of the protesting students. Meanwhile, BBMKU officials declined to comment but a university official said, "The vice-chancellor will look into the matter."

Colleges launch teacher exchange prog to address faculty shortage

Dhanbad: In a bid to tackle the acute shortage of faculty under Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU), colleges have initiated a teacher exchange programme aimed at optimizing existing resources. The move, pioneered by R S More College, Gobindpur, and SSLNT Women's College, Dhanbad, involves sharing teachers between institutions based on need and availability. Dr Pravin Singh, principal of R S More College, said, "Under the proposed system, one teacher will serve in two colleges depending on the subject requirement and teacher availability." The initiative is seen as a practical response to BBMKU's ongoing teacher crisis. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

I suggested naming of BBMKU after Binod Bihari Mahto: Hemant

1 2 Dhanbad: Unveiling the statue of Jharkhand statehood movement leader and founding member of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Binod Bihari Mahto at the Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University ( BBMKU ) here on Monday jointly with governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, chief minister Hemant Soren said the govt's decision to establish the university in 2014 was a landmark step to help students of Dhanbad to study higher education in their own district. Hemant recalled Mahto as a noted educationist of the state and said naming the university was a fitting tribute to the late JMM leader . "Earlier, students were forced to travel long distances for academic work. Now, that is over. I also suggested naming the university after Binod Bihar Mahto when it was founded in 2017," Hemant said. Speaking on the occasion, governor Gangwar, who is also the chancellor of state universities, expressed dissatisfaction over the standard of higher education in Jharkhand, saying the benchmark remains below expectations and making the students seek opportunities in other states. "The crisis of faculty members is also a major issue in the state's universities. JPSC has been instructed to begin the recruitment process for teachers," the governor added. Several dignitaries, including Giridih MP Chandraprakash Chaudhry, ministers Sudvya Kumar MLA Jaimangal Singh, Raj Sinha, Jairam Mahto, Arup Chatterjee, Mathura Prasad Mahto, Shatrughan Mahto, Umakant Rajak and Chandradeo Mahto, were present at the event. Welcoming the guests, the vice chancellor of the university, Ramkumar Singh, recalled Mahto's contribution to education and society. Students organised cultural performances and sang the university's 'Kulgeet' (anthem) as part of the programme. Meanwhile, Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha slammed Hemant for taking credit of establishing BBMKU. Speaking after the statue unveiling ceremony, Sinha said the university was established during the tenure of former BJP CM Raghubar Das. "Hemant is spreading lies. The university was set up when Raghubar Das was in office. In fact, it was I who suggested naming the university after Binod Bihari Mahto," Sinha claimed and accused the CM of making politically motivated statements. "It seems the CM is delivering a speech at an election rally rather than addressing a formal event," he added.
