Nilai district police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said they received a report from a woman at 3.28pm, stating that her son had been assaulted and threatened by a woman known to them while at the grocery store. "The incident was reported to have occurred around 12.30pm yesterday, when the boy was buying a drink at the shop and was suddenly attacked by the suspect, who kicked and stomped on the victim's face and legs. "The suspect is also alleged to have issued a death threat against the victim. The incident was captured on the store's closed-circuit television system and was also witnessed by a customer who was at the scene,' he said in a statement today. Malik said the suspect was arrested at 10.58pm yesterday, and preliminary investigations revealed she is a holder of a Person with Disability card and is believed to have mental health issues. He said the suspect was believed to have been hallucinating at the time of the incident and accused the boy of stealing items from the premises, although there was no evidence to support the claim. "The victim received treatment at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban and was found to have swelling on his nose and bruises on several parts of his legs,' he said. Magistrate M.S. Arunjothy meted out the sentence on 25-year-old Li Zhechen after he pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the Parliament grounds, which are designated as a restricted area under Section 5(1) of the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959. He committed the offence at 5.30pm on July 9 and was charged under Section 7 of the same Act, which carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both. According to the facts of the case, Li entered the compound to take photos and videos. On-duty police officers then detained him. Deputy public prosecutor Adiba Iman Md Hassan earlier urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent to the accused and the public. Li's lawyer, Lee Ewe Kiang, pleaded for a lenient sentence, saying his client was remorseful and had no intention of trespassing into a restricted area. "On the day of the incident, my client, who was visiting Malaysia as a tourist, had been walking around Perdana Botanical Gardens before accidentally entering the nearby Parliament grounds. In a statement today, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the commission had drawn lessons from the tragic death of Teoh Beng Hock 16 years ago and remains firmly committed to addressing past failings and restoring public trust. "Although recent investigations did not uncover sufficient evidence to charge any individual under the law, the MACC takes seriously the fact that the late Teoh was found dead at the Selangor MACC premises on July 16, 2009. "It was a dark chapter that had a profound impact not only on Teoh's family but also on MACC personnel and the nation. As Chief Commissioner, I wish to express my sympathy and offer my sincerest apologies to the family for the suffering they have endured over the years,' said Azam. Teoh, who served as political secretary to then-Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, 2009, at Plaza Masalam, after giving a statement at the MACC office on the 14th floor of the building. Azam said the number of closed-circuit television cameras at MACC premises has been increased, with high-tech features and strategic placements to monitor and record the movements and conduct of every individual who enters the building. "All MACC buildings are now equipped with iron grilles in line with official safety guidelines. Body-worn cameras are used during every investigation operation to capture activities on the ground and safeguard the integrity of our officers. "We have also adopted the PEACE (Planning, Engage, Account, Closure, Evaluation) interview technique, used in the United Kingdom. This method, which prioritises both effectiveness and safety, has been adapted as the MACC PEACE model,' he said. Azam added that the commission acknowledges the findings of multiple investigations into Teoh's death over the past 16 years, including the Royal Commission of Inquiry in 2011, Court of Appeal ruling in 2014, and most recent police investigation, which was classified as No Further Action by the Attorney General's Chambers. He said MACC is also aware that on May 12, 2015, the government paid RM600,000 in compensation to Teoh's family, along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs, as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956. "Nonetheless, as a gesture of compassion, MACC is prepared to offer a goodwill contribution to the family, with the amount to be determined later, to support the welfare and education needs of Teoh's child,' he said. Defence counsel M. Athimulan told the High Court here today that they needed to review their previous submissions. "Our submissions comprised both Section 300(c) and (d) of the Penal Code, but were more concentrated on Section 300(c). However, the prosecution's stand now is that they are relying on Section 300(d). "This creates a need to revise our entire submissions. In view of that, we are seeking an adjournment to file this new submission, with the court's indulgence, in about six weeks," he said. The court allowed the adjournment, giving the defence six weeks to file the new written submission, while the prosecution was given four weeks thereafter to respond. "In our opening statement, we stated that we would be relying on Sections 300(c) and 300(d) of the Penal Code. However, the submissions we received from the defence mainly focused on Section 300(c). "Therefore, the defence now needs to submit arguments on Section 300(d) as well, to ensure there are no issues if the case proceeds to the appeal stage," he said when met at the court today. According to the opening statement, Section 300(c) defines murder as an act done with the intention of causing bodily injury, and the injury is sufficient in the ordinary course of nature to cause death. Section 300(d), on the other hand, refers to an act committed with the knowledge that it is so imminently dangerous that it must, in all probability, cause death, even if there is no intention to cause death. The prosecution was conducted by Afzainizam together with Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, while the accused was represented by lawyers Athimulan, Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman. Mohd Nazri is accused of causing the death of student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jati here, between 11.55 am and 12.32 pm on Dec 15, 2023. The charge is framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty, or a minimum of 30 years and up to 40 years' imprisonment.
