Boxing world champion clarifies Angel Reese comments with 'hate' admission
The 30-year-old boxing star was brutally snubbed at the recent 2025 BET Awards as she was pipped by Chicago Sky WNBA sensation Angel Reese Boxing star Claressa Shields has clarified her comments about Angel Reese after being snubbed for the BET Sportswoman of the Year award. Earlier this month, Chicago Sky WNBA sensation Reese picked up the honour at the awards in Los Angeles, California - marking the third time she has picked up the coveted prize. At 23, Reese is widely regarded as one of the biggest names in women's basketball. Shields was one of the other nominees for the prestigious award. And after being rebuffed of the award, the 30-year-old was far from impressed and took to social media to express her views. Taking to X - formerly known as Twitter - she posted: "Still don't know how I didn't win the Sportswoman of the Year for the @BETAwards but Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other Nominees. I just thought accolades mattered." She added: "Ain't nobody saying Angel Reese don't have accolades or she not good…. I'm saying I thought the person with 'THE MOST' accolades & accomplishments would win the Award. I'm team Angel Reese!" Last year, Shields won the WBC, and vacant WBF female heavyweight and WBO female light heavyweight titles with a stoppage win over Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse. Shields then followed it up with a win over Danielle Perkins to win the IBF, WBO and inaugural WBA female heavyweight titles. She seemingly thought her recent accolades would be enough to pip Reese to the award. Shields received some backlash for her posts. However, the boxing superstar was quick to address her comments and express her adoration for Reese during an interview with Brandon Robinson. 'I'm not angry or salty or any of that,' she said. 'I was just shocked." She further clarified: 'I've won the Women's Sports Foundation Award for Sportswoman of the Year three times—more than any other woman. I think Serena Williams won it twice. "I went to the ESPYs as the only female boxer to ever win Best Boxer. I have a Nickelodeon award. I mean, I have all these things that I've won. So I thought that would mean finally getting some recognition with BET.' It is evident the American has a lot of respect for Reese - despite clearly thinking she was more deserving of winning the aforementioned award. 'Anything that we do—good, bad—we say something, wear something; they're all down our throats," she continued. "Grown men, grown women constantly judging us, trolling us, trying to break our will and make us not be confident. And I think we both experience that. Being Black women, they attack us every single day. When I see her getting it and I go through it myself, I'm clapping for myself and clapping for her, because she just keeps going. I actually hate that it looks like I joined the Angel Reese hate train.' She later added: "I hate that it actually looks like I joined the Angel Reese hate train. It's like no, listen, I'm with you. f*** them... I'm not allowed to be a competitor? That's what we are. We are female athletes. We are competitors... But I really do hate how they tried to pin us against each other. Listen, I'm an Angel Reese fan. I'm not a hater of her."

Angel Reese joins Serena Williams on the short list of athletes with this award
The post Angel Reese joins Serena Williams on the short list of athletes with this award appeared first on ClutchPoints. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese keeps making history. The second-year All-Star was named BET Sportswoman of the Year for the third year in a row, joining Serena Williams as the only athletes to ever win the award three times. Reese was nominated alongside A'ja Wilson, Claressa Shields, Coco Gauff, Dawn Staley, Flau'jae Johnson, Juju Watkins, Sha'Carri Richardson and Simone Biles. Advertisement Reese's Sky are just 2-5 to start the season, but the post player out of LSU is averaging 9.1 points and a team-high 12.3 rebounds per game. As a rookie, she surpassed the previous WNBA record for rebounds in a season (Wilson did as well in 2024, even besting Reese by five boards). Now, Reese has drawn a Dennis Rodman comparison from former NBA guard Jeff Teague. 'I'm saying her whole overall game is Dennis Rodman,' Teague said in an appearance Monday on the Club 520 podcast. 'Her whole brand, everything. Dennis Rodman was the biggest player off the court. He was a f—-ing star and he was a menace on defense and rebounding. She is the Dennis Rodman of the WNBA.' The last two times Reese earned Sportswoman of the Year honors, she ended her season with major accomplishments — the rebounding record last year and a national championship with the Tigers the year before. This time, she will have to do more than she has done through seven games to live up to the award. Though she's a nightly double-double threat, her efficiency has taken another step back in 2025. She's shooting only 31 percent from the field and her Sky are about to face a New York Liberty team that held her to an 0-8 night earlier in the season. But Reese said it herself — she just has to keep working. Advertisement 'Everybody's been underground at one point. Everybody's been through something at one point,' she told the media after the team's most recent loss. 'So I think we just come together with that chip on our shoulders. I think everybody just comes to work every day and that's just something that we're feeling.' Angel Reese. Image via: Michael Hickey/ Getty Images It started as lighthearted social media banter, quickly morphing into a public back-and-forth that revealed deeper cracks between Chicago Sky standout Angel Reese and her Unrivaled teammate Kahleah Copper. While the two WNBA stars previously shared chemistry on the court, their recent exchange on X suggested that off-court tensions may have quietly been building for months, and now, they're on full display. Angel Reese and Kahleah Copper put their online beef on display It all began when Copper tweeted, '@Reese10Angel just miss me.. I'll be in Chicago soon 😘,' to which Reese replied sharply, 'nah, can we meet outside of the workplace? damn.' That seemingly playful reply took a sudden turn when Copper responded with, 'Lol you actually replied smarta**ssss!! And don't even start making up stuff on the net I'm not playing wit youuuuuu ☹️.' — Reese10Angel (@Reese10Angel) Reese didn't back down, escalating with, 'you right. IM STILL OFF YOU.' Tensions appeared to predate this interaction. Responding to an earlier June 8 tweet from Copper that read, 'maaannnn @kalanibrown21 gon' have @Reese10Angel mad at meeeee 😢😭,' Reese exposed a more serious rift: 'oh yeah i forgot to reply to this too… you been acting real shady since unrivaled too. you didn't even want to speak in phoenix and had to facetime me after smh.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Even personal grooming wasn't off-limits in the spat. Shields expressed frustration after losing the 2025 BET Sportswoman of the Year award to Reese. But instead of firing back, the Chicago Sky rookie stayed focused on her game and let her performance speak. Following a tough loss to the New York Liberty, Reese was asked about the award during a postgame press conference. Still emotional, she opened up and reflected on the moment with honesty and grace, choosing not to respond to the drama. 'It's great. Obviously, this is my third one. Obviously, it really meant something to other people today 'cause it's me. And I focus on basketball. I come in to work every day and work. I don't complain, I don't care about anything else. I have bad days. I haven't been playing well at all. And I could sit here and just mope around and point the finger, but it's been me,' she shared. She continued, 'People would die and kill to have this job,' adding, 'being able to play with the best players in the world means a lot to me. I put my all in this sh*t. I do.' Claressa Shields wasn't happy after losing BET award to Angel Reese: 'I just thought accolades mattered'
Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese had an excellent rookie season after a standout career at LSU. In her first season with the Sky, Reese averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds. That performance earned Reese an All-Star nod, a spot on the All-Rookie team and some down ballot MVP votes. It was also enough for Reese to secure her third straight BET Sportswoman of the Year award. Reese — who was up against a number of big-name candidates — won the honor during the BET Awards on Monday. Advertisement One of those candidates, however, wasn't pleased about the decision. Boxer Claressa Shields expressed disappointment over losing out on the award, saying, "I just thought accolades mattered." Shields expanded on those thoughts in additional tweets, saying she has more accolades and has experienced more success in her field than Reese. Shields also called the award a "popularity contest." Shields has accomplished quite a bit over her career. She's a two-time Olympic gold medalist who is a perfect 16-0 in her boxing career. She's been nominated for the BET Sportswoman of the Year award two other times, but lost out to Simone Biles in 2020 and Naomi Osaka in 2021. Advertisement While Shields has experienced plenty of success, the award only takes the previous year into consideration. Shields won the WBO light heavyweight and WBC heavyweight titles in 2024, but only took part in one fight. Reese, by comparison, finished out her college career, got drafted and excelled in the WNBA. She accomplished quite a bit last year. After receiving some backlash, Shields said she's "not joining in on any hate train" for Reese. Shields' comments came prior to the Sky's 85-66 loss to the New York Liberty on Tuesday. Following the contest, Reese's teammate, Ariel Atkins, praised Reese for the way she continues to show up and play well despite the criticism she receives online. Reese led the Sky with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
