As the Monsoon Session of Parliament approaches, tensions are already flaring. Ramesh demands Parliament address Vote Bandi in Bihar, where lakhs allegedly lost voting rights, and pushes for the long-pending J&K statehood bill. BJD's Amar Patnaik slams the BJP-led Odisha government for failures across sectors, highlighting deaths during Rath Yatra, crimes against women, and the tragic self-immolation of an ABVP student. RJD's Manoj Jha attacks PM Modi, accusing him of ignoring lawlessness in Bihar and Manipur while selectively deploying fact-finding teams elsewhere. BJD holds silent protest, seeks justice for student
Bhubaneswar: TheOpposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Friday staged a silent protest at Janata Maidan under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Bhubaneswar, demanding justice for the girl student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, who died after self-immolation over alleged sexual harassment by one of faculty members and college authorities' apathy. Hundreds of BJD workers, leaders and women activists gathered in silent protest, with black cloths tied around their mouths, holding placards and raising slogans seeking accountability and action against those responsible for the tragic incident at FM College. The party reiterated its demand for a judicial probe into the tragic death of the victim girl student of FM College and the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister for failing to help the victim. The party accused the BJP-led Union government and its representatives in the State of politicising the issue and diverting attention from the core injustice faced by the the gathering, BJD leaders said, 'We are here under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi to protest peacefully. Gandhiji taught us the power of non-violent resistance.' The protesters alleged that the BJP and its MPs have attempted to distort the narrative, misguiding the public while ignoring the emotional and social trauma that led the young girl to take the extreme step. 'This is not just about one college or one girl; it's about the systemic failure. Justice delayed is justice denied,' they added. The BJD also strongly condemned the police action during earlier protests, claiming that rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas shells were used against peaceful protesters. 'If our daughters had been in that crowd, what would have happened to them? Such brutality is unacceptable,' a leader said. The party demanded strict action against those responsible for the girl's death and the officials involved in the alleged police excesses. 'We will continue our democratic fight until justice is served,' the leaders said.

Ravenshaw University revokes order on women students' stay
Bhubaneswar: Facingcriticism from different quarters, authorities of Ravenshaw University in Cuttack have withdrawn their earlier order of denying permission to women faculty members and students to remain on campus after 5.30 pm. In an order issued on Thursday and signed by the university registrar, the administration had said: 'No female faculty, staff or students, are permitted to remain in the workplace or on campus after 5.30 pm. This decision will remain in effect until a formal Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) is issued.' The directive further noted that in case of urgent work, women would be required to obtain consent from the Head of the Department and submit a written request expressing their willingness to stay beyond the specified time. The order was apparently issued in the wake of the death of a woman student by self-immolation on Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College campus in Balasore on July 12 over an alleged sexual harassment incident. However, after facing strong backlash from students, civil society, and political leaders, Ravenshaw University revoked the order within hours. The revised statement read: 'The office order restricting the stay of female faculty, staff and students in the workplace or on campus after 5.30 pm is hereby withdrawn.' Taking to X, BJD spokesperson and an alumnus Lenin Mohanty said, 'The Ravenshaw authorities, acting under the direction of their political masters, issued an order asking female students not to stay inside the campus after 5.30 pm. Facing backlash over this shameful directive, they were forced to cancel it. Is this how the authorities plan to protect our sisters — by issuing such obnoxious orders? Is Odisha becoming unsafe for women and the girl child?.'

BJD to gherao RDC offices on July 21
1 2 Bhubaneswar: BJD announced on Friday that it will gherao all three revenue divisional commissioner (RDC) offices in Berhampur, Cuttack and Sambalpur on July 21 protesting alleged systemic failure which led to self-immolation by the 20-year-old student in Balasore. BJD senior vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra said, "This unfortunate incident has deeply saddened the state, and BJD is determined to fight for justice for the girl and her family." BJD, its student and youth wings, began state-wide protests following the death of the girl on July 14. BJD has demanded the resignation of the higher education minister and a judicial inquiry into the incident by a sitting judge of Orissa high court. Mishra declared that until justice is delivered to the girl, BJD will only intensify the agitation. Regarding the Ravenshaw University campus restriction order for women, BJD termed it a "Talibani" order. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said the directive clearly reflects the govt's regressive approach to women's freedom. "At a time when cases of atrocities against women are rising in the state, the govt's failure to ensure their safety has been exposed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hear better, live easier Amplifon Book Now Undo This Taliban-style notice clearly illustrates the govt's anti-women mindset," he alleged. "Though the notice was later withdrawn following public outrage, we demand the higher education minister and Union education minister issue a clarification on how such a regressive order was allowed," he added. BJP state vice-president Biranchi Narayan Tripathy said BJD is holding protests to maintain its relevance. "Odisha has rejected the BJD. They are protesting to gain political brownie points from an unfortunate incident," he added.

BJP flays Oppn over bandh
Bhubaneswar: The BJP MP, Aparajita Sarangi, on Thursday criticised the Opposition for calling a Statewide bandh in Odisha, terming it an attempt to create political disturbance rather than providing constructive solutions in the wake of the self-immolation case. Speaking to the media, BJP national spokesperson Sarangi said, 'The death of a young student from FM (Autonomous) College on July 14 has deeply shocked us all. The government has responded to the situation within its constitutional and administrative framework. But instead of helping restore calm or suggesting positive solutions, the Congress and its allies are indulging in disruptive politics.' The Bhubaneswar MP said the Odisha government responded swiftly and responsibly to the incident. She highlighted that the government took complete responsibility for the girl's treatment. Sarangi also said that immediate disciplinary and legal action were taken against the accused faculty member, Samir Kumar Sahu, and the Principal of the College, Dillip Kumar Ghose, who were arrested and sent to jail. She condemned the demand for the resignation of Odisha's Higher Education Minister, calling it a diversionary tactic. 'Such behaviour is unacceptable. This is not the time for street politics but for serious self-reflection by these parties,' Sarangi added. Slamming the Congress, she said, 'The Congress was in power for 40 years, and the BJD has ruled for 24 years. What did they do to create a secure and enabling ecosystem for women? Why didn't they ensure women's safety then?' Sarangi further said the Opposition BJD and Congress have no moral authority to question a newly-formed government led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who took charge just over a year ago. Criticising the Opposition for 'politicising' the incident, she said, 'Both BJD and Congress are now polluting the environment by using this tragedy for political mileage. They failed to build a safe ecosystem during their regimes. It's time for them to introspect.' She concluded by expressing confidence in the BJP-led government's intent and capacity to ensure justice and improve women's safety across the State.
