BMW driver smashes into Edinburgh garden as terrified kids take cover in house
A driver ploughed through a Scots mum's and a neighbour's garden while her children took cover inside. A BMW driver has ploughed into an Edinburgh garden as terrified kids take cover in their homes. Yesterday evening, Shona Halliday was at her house in Dalkeith when a motorist"came through the fence to her garden". Footage from the garden shows the BMW 3 series on the lawn, with damage to the front of the vehicle and the wooden fence crumpled underneath. Shona and her neighbour both have 13-year-old boys, who she said "could have been out playing in the garden". Officers have since arrested a 32-year-old driver, who is due to appear in court on July 2. Police have said no injuries were reported. Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Shona said: "This happened at 9.05pm last night on Thornybank Grove. "He drove into the Woodburn pavilion car park, then drove right through the boundary fence through my garden and through me and my neighbour's fence. Then was trying to reverse back out. "Neighbour and a bystander got him out the car and held him till the police came. No one was hurt but myself and my neighbour has 13-year-old boys who could have been out in the garden, such a shock. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 9.05pm on Tuesday, 10 June, 2025, we received a report of a one vehicle crash on Thornybank Grove, Dalkeith. 'Officers attended, and no injuries were reported. The driver, a 32-year-old man, was arrested and charged in connection with a driving offence and is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 2 July, 20." Earlier today, in a separate incident, we reported that two women have died in a horror crash on a busy Scots road, as another pensioner was airlifted to hospital. Emergency crews rushed to the A98 near Enzie, Buckie, at around 12.30pm yesterday, Tuesday June 10, after receiving a report of a collision involving a Vauxhall Insignia and a Peugeot 2008. Upon attendance the 32-year-old female driver of the Vauxhall and the 77-year-old female passenger of the Peugeot were pronounced dead at the scene. The 77-year-old male driver of the Peugeot was taken by air ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where hospital staff describe his condition as serious but stable. Sergeant Dave Cooper from the Road Policing Unit in Elgin said: 'Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the two women who died. 'An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed the crash who has not already spoken to officers, or those who have any dashcam footage that may capture either vehicle prior to the collision, to please come forward. 'If you can assist the investigation, please contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 1354 of 10 June.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The best non-electric automatic car in the UK is cheaper than it's premium rivals
Auto Express has named the best automatic cars in the UK, with the winner beating the iconic Porsche 911 to the top spot A team of motor gurus handed down an intriguing judgement as they set out to name the best non-electric automatic car on the market. They considered a wide range of cars at varying price points to crown their top pick. The boom in automatic transmission has been unmistakable since the turn of the millennium, with modern vehicles, the length and breadth of the UK, now frequently sporting the option for an automatic gear shift. Three in 10 drivers, will choose an automatic car, according to This Is Money. Yet, when it came time to select the finest among these vehicles, the adjudicators at Auto Express decided to exclude electric vehicles from consideration due to their unique powertrains that operate without conventional automatic gearboxes. This decision paved the way for a list dominated by petrol and diesel-powered cars. Electric vehicles might be all the rage, but their absence didn't dull the surprise of the competition's results—as more budget-friendly models soared past their higher-end competitors. Following rigorous evaluations, the BMW 3 series emerged victorious as the UK's premier automatic vehicle, overtaking the famed Porsche 992 911 for supremacy, reports the Mirror. Commentators at Auto Express were full of adulation for the BMW offering. They remarked: "BMW appears to be trading on wacky, controversial styling as of late, but the latest 3 series remains resolutely sensible – and brilliant." Modern BMWs go a little too heavy on the touchscreen-based controls, but it's hard to fault the cabin's quality of design. The 3 is a big car these days, so passenger accommodation is now pretty good." While the BMW boasted a significantly lower price tag than the high-performance sports car it outshone, with an initial cost of £41,220 - almost a third of its Stuttgart-based rival's £103,700 - it was the third-placed vehicle that stole the show. The latest iteration of the Citroen C3 truly shines, thanks to its starting price of a mere £20,115. This not only undercuts the Porsche by a factor of five but is also roughly half the cost of the BMW. Nevertheless, it still managed to eclipse other high-end vehicles, including the Mercedes S-Class and Bentley Continental GT, to secure its podium spot. The experts stated: "In the supermini class, the Citroen C3 stands out for its focus on comfort and practicality, particularly in the automatic petrol version. "The C3 is more about comfort than sportiness, with light, precise steering and soft cabin is thoughtfully designed, with clear, user-friendly controls and a spacious feel that ensures comfort for the driver and passengers." Budget-friendly options such as the Dacia Duster, MG3, Skoda Octavia and Renault Clio - all of which are available with manual gearboxes, also secured places within the top-ten list. Dacia Dusters can be available for less than £20,000.

Experts name best non-electric automatic car on sale in UK – and it won't break the bank A group of motoring experts have named the best automatic car to buy in the UK, and while the top three may not be a surprise, the rest of the top 10 may well be Car reviewers have revealed their favourite automatic car (stock) (Image: Westend61 via Getty Images ) A team of automotive experts has concluded a thorough test on the UK's top automatic cars for sale, arriving at an unexpected favourite. The preference for automatic transmissions has grown substantially since the dawn of the 21st century, with nearly every new car model available in the UK providing some sort of automatic gearbox variant. But when it came to picking the cream of the crop, the reviewing panel—excluding electric vehicles because of their distinct powertrain systems that negate traditional automatic gearboxes—focused exclusively on petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. Even without considering electric models, the outcome was still quite the revelation, with more budget-friendly options outperforming extravagantly priced luxury cars with limited production runs. The BMW 3 Series won out as the UK's best non-electric automatic (Image: Sjoerd van der Wal, Getty Images ) Ultimately, motoring experts from the renowned publication Auto Express crowned the BMW 3 series as the best automatic car up for grabs in the UK, overtaking the illustrious Porsche 992 911 in the rankings. Article continues below Delving into the virtues of the respected Munich-manufactured vehicle, the experts praised: "BMW appears to be trading on wacky, controversial styling as of late, but the latest 3 series remains resolutely sensible – and brilliant." They went on to critique, albeit lightly: "Modern BMWs go a little too heavy on the touchscreen-based controls, but it's hard to fault the cabin's quality of design. The 3 is a big car these days, so passenger accommodation is now pretty good." The Porsche 911 992 came a competitive second behind the BMW (Image: Sjoerd van der Wal, Getty Images ) While the BMW came in at a much more affordable starting price of £41,220 – nearly three times less than its competitor from Stuttgart at £103,700 – it was the third-place car that truly caught everyone's eye. Kicking off from a mere £20,115, the latest Citroen C3 is notably five times cheaper than the Porsche and about half the cost of the BMW. Yet it surprisingly landed itself a spot on the podium, surpassing both the Mercedes S-Class and Bentley Continental GT. The reviewers shared their insight, they stated: "In the supermini class, the Citroen C3 stands out for its focus on comfort and practicality, particularly in the automatic petrol version." Article continues below The Citroen C3 beat much more expensive rivals to the podium (Image: Sjoerd van der Wal, Getty Images ) They elaborated on the appeal of the Citroen C3: "The C3 is more about comfort than sportiness, with light, precise steering and soft cabin is thoughtfully designed, with clear, user-friendly controls and a spacious feel that ensures comfort for the driver and passengers." Other cars featuring high up in the rankings included budget-friendly options like the Dacia Duster, MG3, Skoda Octavia, and Renault Clio, all of which also offer manual transmission variants.
