After Being Accused Of Using Ozempic And Looking Unrecognizable In Her New Gym Selfies, People Are Sprinting To Serena Williams's Defense

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time Serena Williams's physical appearance has been the target of scrutiny by the public, but this time, fans are firing back at the negativity. Serena, who's often referred to as the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) when it comes to tennis, has been the target of criticism since she began playing the sport professionally at the young age of 14, with her older sister, Venus Williams, who's also a highly decorated Olympian. From the beads she wore in her hair... ...to the "controversial" outfits she rocked on the court, Serena has been the target of scrutiny since the beginning, with conversations often having nothing to do with the sport itself. Related: 10 Nepo Babies Who Ended Up Becoming More Famous Than Their Celeb Parents But some of the most shocking and disgusting comments that have been uttered or typed about the multi-Grand Slam winner, were focused specifically on her body. For decades the media has always had a weird fascination with the shape, look, and size of Serena's body. She appeared "different" compared to other athletes in the predominantly white sport, which made her and her sister prime targets for racism and microaggressions. Serena remembered being called the n-word during the 2001 BNP Paribas Open in California, as the crowd booed Serena and her sister. undefined The mom of two was (and, honestly, still is) constantly compared to an animal, while others called her aggressive and frightening. Her athletic build was deemed unattractive, unfeminine, and frequently likened to the physique of a man. But despite the incessant body-shaming, Serena never let that get in the way of winning. She is now one of the most decorated tennis players in history, breaking records and barriers throughout her impressive career. Serena announced her retirement in 2022, citing she was "evolving away" from the sport. In fact, she wanted to shy away from the word "retirement" and think of it more as an "evolution." She also mentioned a desire to expand her family. Outside of raising two daughters — 7-year-old Olympia and 1-year-old Adira River — with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, Serena has her hands in many buckets, including running a venture capital firm, co-owning a WNBA team, and more. But even as she continues to expand her empire, somehow the focus always comes back to Serena's appearance. On July 11, Serena shared a series of gym selfies after a workout. She playfully captioned the carousel, "Working out and working on my angles." Venus Williams will make pro tennis return as DC Open wild-card invite

Venus Williams is planning to return to professional tennis later this month for the first time in more than a year. The 45-year-old has accepted a wild-card invite to compete in the women's singles draw at the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open beginning July 19 in Washington, D.C., tournament organizers announced on Friday, July 11.. It will be the first professional singles match for the seven-time Grand Slam winner since the Miami Open in March 2024, when Williams lost in the first round. She last appeared at the DC Open in 2022. Advertisement "There's something truly special about D.C.: the energy, the fans, the history," Williams said in a statement. "This city has always shown me so much love, and I can't wait to compete there again." WIMBLEDON 2025: Semifinal results, schedule through finals It seemed Williams might make a return to professional tennis earlier this year when the BNP Paribas Open announced she had received a wild-card entry into the main singles draw at the 1000-level WTA tournament in Indian Wells, California in March. But Williams later clarified she had not actually committed to play in the event. Williams is currently listed as an "inactive" player on her WTA website profile page. She hasn't played in a Grand Slam event since Wimbledon in 2023, when she lost in the first round after suffering a knee injury. Williams announced in 2011 she had been diagnosed with Sjögren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disease. Advertisement "She has inspired people around the world with her accomplishments on the court and her visionary impact off the court," said Mark Ein, chairman of the Mubadala Citi DC Open. "I know how much it means to our D.C. fans and community to be able to watch her compete in person this summer." Williams won Wimbledon five times during her career, most recently in 2008, and also has two U.S. Open titles since first bursting onto the scene as a professional more than 30 years ago. Defending French Open champion Coco Gauff, Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka are among the other notable commitments for the women's singles portion of the 2025 DC Open alongside Williams. Why Zendaya Didn't Join Tom Holland at Wimbledon This Year

THE RUNDOWN Tom Holland made a surprise appearance at Wimbledon yesterday, but his plus-one wasn't his fiancée, Zendaya. Instead, Holland brought his younger brother Paddy. The British actor previously attended a tennis match with Zendaya at the BNP Paribas Open in March 2024. So why didn't Zendaya, who starred in the tennis film Challengers, join her partner at Wimbledon? The answer became clear today: Dune: Part Three just began production. Zendaya will reprise her role as Chani, so she couldn't spend the afternoon watching tennis with Holland in London. Holland's brother had a great time, however, and shared photos of their afternoon on Instagram: Zendaya and Holland haven't made any red carpet appearances this year. At the start of 2025, Holland told Men's Health why he prefers not to walk with his partner at her premieres. 'Because it's not my moment, it's her moment, and if we go together, it's about us,' he said. The couple has kept their relationship as private as possible. As Zendaya explained to ELLE in summer 2023, 'Parts of my life, I accept, are going to be public. I can't not be a person and live my life and love the person I love. But also, I do have control over what I choose to share. It's about protecting the peace and letting things be your own but also not being afraid to exist. You can't hide. That's not fun, either. I am navigating it more than ever now.' Zendaya revealed her engagement to Holland at the Golden Globes in January. A source confirmed the happy news to People on January 6, saying Holland had wanted to propose to Zendaya 'for a while.' 'He's always been crazy about her,' the insider said. 'He always knew she was the one. They have something very special.' They won't get married quickly, the source added: 'They will just enjoy things for now and won't rush a wedding. They are both busy with work projects.'
