Man hits Kolkata cop with car, probe reveals he is an illegal Bangladeshi migrant
Kolkata Police have arrested a 41-year-old Bangladeshi national, Azad Sheikh, for living illegally in India without valid travel documents. The arrest came after a rash driving incident in the Kalighat area, where Sheikh's car collided with a bike ridden by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Susen incident occurred in the morning when Sheikh, while recklessly driving a car, struck ASI Das, causing serious injuries. Das suffered a fracture in his left leg, facial abrasions, and pain in his waist. He was initially taken to the SSKM Trauma Care Centre for emergency treatment and later shifted to Kothari Medical Centre by his wife, Tanusree Das, for further Police detained Sheikh at the scene and impounded his vehicle. During questioning, it was revealed that Sheikh had been residing in India since October 2023 without a valid passport or visa. Authorities confirmed that he had violated the Foreigners Act and had also provided false information to public servants during his stay.
Sheikh has been booked under Section 14A(b) of the Foreigners Act and Section 212 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for harbouring himself under a false identity. In connection with the driving incident, he has also been charged under Sections 281, 125(b), 324(4), and 110 of the Watch
