Sebastien Haller joins Utrecht from Dortmund on permanent deal
BORUSSIA DORTMUND confirmed Sebastien Haller's permanent transfer to FC Utrecht on Monday. The striker joined the Dutch club on a free transfer after terminating his Dortmund contract a year early. Haller, 31, previously played for Utrecht between 2015 and 2017 before returning on loan last season. 'This summer there was quite a bit of interest from other clubs, but for me there was only one ideal scenario and that was FC Utrecht,' Haller said in a club statement. His Dortmund stint was marked by challenges, including a testicular cancer diagnosis shortly after his €31 million move from Ajax in 2022. Haller missed six months of action while undergoing treatment before returning to football. He also endured heartbreak in the 2022-23 season, missing a crucial penalty in a 2-2 draw against Mainz that handed Bayern Munich the Bundesliga title. The Ivorian striker later redeemed himself by scoring the winning goal in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final against Nigeria. - AFP

Dortmund face Ramos challenge in Club World Cup clash
BORUSSIA DORTMUND will have to overcome 'superstar' Sergio Ramos and his winning mentality to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, said the German team's coach Niko Kovac. Former Real Madrid captain and four-time Champions League winner Ramos, 39, is Monterrey's defensive leader and Kovac highlighted the Spaniard's will to win and Monterrey's aggression. 'He's a superstar you know,' Kovac told a news conference Monday ahead of the last 16 clash against the Mexican side. 'All the players that are playing so long... it shows their mindset. They are winners, they want to win in every single training session, every single game, they want to be on the top level with every single pass in training,' continued the Croatian. 'He's a leader, as a leader you want to be as long as possible on a high stage. It's a little bit funny I'm now a coach and he's still a player -- but I think he will become a coach.' Ramos will do battle with Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, who excelled this season and finished as the joint-top goalscorer in the Champions League with 13 strikes. The Guinea international is looking forward to taking on Ramos. 'It's going to be the first time, I'm looking forward to it, I want to play against Sergio Ramos, he's a great defender,' Guirassy told reporters. 'We will need to be strong, simply put.' Kovac said his team needed to be aware of the combative style Ramos and his team-mates will employ in Atlanta. 'The Latin American teams play robust football, with strong physicality -- football is a contact sport, we can't look it like basketball,' said Kovac. 'I see it in a positive way, it's the way I like to play. We have to adapt. 'One should not be provoked of course, but I told the players they have to defend themselves if they need to, I think the referees will have open eyes for that as well.' The coach has complained about the intense heat at the tournament, with the German side forced to play in early kick-offs under a blazing sun, but Tuesday's match at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium will offer his side some relief. 'I think maybe with my statements I sometimes can be a bit annoying when I talk about certain factors that are repeated,' said Kovac. 'I can confidently say we're looking forward to tomorrow, the conditions will be better. We don't have to play in 45 degrees Celsius. 'We've proved we can play high intensity football and this is what we want to do when it's a bit cooler and the conditions are not so hot.'

Club World Cup winners team who handles weather best
BORUSSIA DORTMUND coach Niko Kovac said Tuesday the team who copes best with the summer heatwave in the United States will win the Club World Cup. The German side face Korean outfit Ulsan HD on Wednesday looking to qualify for the last 16 from Group F in Cincinnati, where temperatures are set to reach 34 degrees Celsius. 'I think that this tournament will be decided not by the best team, but the team that can adapt to these weather conditions the best and they will probably win this tournament,' Kovac told reporters at the TQL Stadium. Dortmund edged South African side Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 at the same stadium on Saturday, in which their substitutes hid from the sun in the dressing room in the first half, and then under umbrellas pitch-side in the second. 'Our boys are very well taken care of by our doctors and the medical staff,' continued Kovac. 'We took the necessary measures and we try to do everything possible to make the right decisions and to take care of our players. 'We have very cold towels. We put them in ice baths. The boys also need to cool down their legs and their feet in cold water and ice baths. 'During the last match some of the boys watched the match from the dressing room. We didn't want them sitting on the bench in the direct sunlight. We want to keep them in the shade.' Kovac also said he did not want Dortmund's players to get too cold either. 'We try to decrease the intensity of the air conditioning and the fans because it is very dangerous to go from hot to cold all the time,' he added. Kovac said winger Jamie Gittens, who has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, was not available to face Ulsan because he was ill. 'There were so many rumours at the moment but he is actually sick,' said Kovac. 'He felt under the weather for the last couple of days with a clogged nose and a scratchy throat. 'You know, because if you are in the air-conditioned room all the time you get sick, but it's part of the game.'
