Nets G Egor Demin explains why he chose #8 for his jersey
Brooklyn Nets guard Egor Demin chose to wear the #8 on his jersey to being his NBA career after being selected by the Nets with the eighth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Demin is one of the players that Brooklyn will be relying on to show what he can do on the court as the team tries to speed up this rebuild and he explained why he chose his current number. "I chose #8 because one half of 8 is my first letter in my name (1/2 of 8 looks like E) and the second half is #3, the day I was born in the 3rd month," Demin said in a video posted on the NBA app. While the first part of his explanation is obvious, the second of why he chose the number eight is interesting because he was born on March 3, 2006. Demin, 19, came to the Nets after spending the 2024-25 season as a member of the BYU Cougars after spending the 2023 season playing for Spanish club Real Madrid. Demin came to the United States as somewhere between a four-star and five-star recruit and once he enrolled at BYU, he was the school's first five-star recruit in the history of the school. Demin, listed at 6-foot-9 and 200 pounds, has played two games for Brooklyn thus far in the Las Vegas Summer League and Nets fans have been understandably curious about how he has looked. Demin is averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 33.3% from the field and 40.0% from three-point land, one of the areas that NBA Draft experts were worried about. Demin was regarded as the best passer in this draft given the way that he uses his height to find windows that most point guards cannot see along with his feathery touch to maximize his accuracy. While Demin has averaged 1.5 turnovers per game, his shooting numbers from the free-throw line and long-range have been encouraging as Brooklyn is hoping his shooting can improve sooner than later. BYU Freshman AJ Dybantsa Partners With Fanatics for Reported 8-Figure NIL Deal
What is life like being a multimillionaire college athlete before ever stepping foot on the gridiron or basketball court? Just ask AJ Dybantsa, the top-ranked prospect in the nation who is set to suit up for the BYU Cougars this upcoming college basketball season. The 6-foot-9, 200-pound forward out of Brocktown, Massachusetts, has burst onto the scene as one of the most heralded prospects in recent memory. Multiple recruiting outlets rank him as the No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, and he is widely projected to be the top overall pick in next year's NBA Draft. But before he suits up for the Cougars this year, Dybantsa has been busy in the always-evolving NIL space, agreeing to multiple brand partnerships and carrying an NIL valuation of more than $4 million, per On3. Dybantsa made another big splash this past week, signing a multi-year deal with Fanatics Collectibles, one of the company's most significant NIL partnership deals to date. Fanatics has exclusive collectible partnerships with multiple athletes and welcomed Dybantsa as its newest ambassador in a video clip released on Wednesday. The agreement with Fanatics' memorabilia arm is worth eight figures, according to a source familiar with the deal. The exclusive partnership will be centered around trading cards and memorabilia, including autographs, game-used jerseys, inscriptions and Dybantsa's inclusion in Fanatics brand marketing campaigns. According to Fanatics collectibles, Dybantsa will be featured in a number of upcoming products, among them Bowman U NOW – a program that celebrates moments in collegiate sports – and other Bowman offerings. Dybantsa was already part of Fanatics Collectibles' McDonald's All-American Game deal and has reported NIL partnerships with the likes of Red Bull and Nike. 5-star Oregon football target predicted to land with Big 12 school
The Oregon Ducks are in the thick of it for 5-star quarterback Ryder Lyons, who announced on Wednesday night that he is set to make his commitment next week on Tuesday, June 24. At the moment, both Oregon and the BYU Cougars are thought to be the two leading candidates to land a commitment from the No. 13 player and No. 4 QB in the 2026 cycle. Last weekend, Lyons took his official visit to Oregon, and he is headed to BYU this week for his official visit with the Cougars. Advertisement On Tuesday morning, a prediction came down from the 247Sports recruiting staff for Lyons to end up with BYU in the long run. While the prediction only has a confidence level of 5, it is still something that should be taken into account, especially considering Lyons' ties with the Mormon community and his plan to take an LDS mission out of high school, delaying his freshman season until 2027. While Oregon is seen as a strong contender to land Lyons, based on their track record of developing QBs, the offensive system, and his relationship with offensive coordinator Will Stein, BYU is a huge threat here. Several reports show that the Cougars have offered a massive NIL deal for Lyons. Ultimately, it's likely going to come down to which matters more for Lyons: a huge lump sum of money or the opportunity to play for and be developed by the Ducks. Advertisement We will find out in a matter of days, but this one appears to be trending toward BYU at the moment. Wisconsin basketball schedules nonconference game against recent NCAA Tournament opponent
The Wisconsin Badgers will square off against the BYU Cougars on Nov. 21, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah. In a rematch of the epic showdown in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament round of 32, the two teams will tip off at the Delta Center, the home of the NBA's Utah Jazz, in mid-November. The Cougars claimed a 91-89 victory in the March 22 tournament showdown between the two teams in Denver, Colorado. Advertisement The matchup is expected to be the first of a home-and-home, with BYU set to travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 2026. The news also arrives on the heels of star guard John Blackwell's decision to return to Wisconsin for the 2025-26 slate. The rising junior dropped 21 points, snared six rebounds and dished out three assists in a game-high 38 minutes in the season-ending two-point loss. Both BYU and Wisconsin's rosters will appear much different when the two squads take the hardwood in November. With the departures of star wing John Tonje, veteran center Steven Crowl, guard Max Klesmit and bench contributors Carter Gilmore and Kamari McGee, Greg Gard turned to the portal. Former San Diego State guard Nick Boyd, Virginia wing Andrew Rhode and Portland forward Austin Rapp are projected to suit up alongside Blackwell and center Nolan Winter in UW's 2025-26 starting lineup. Senior guard Braeden Carrington, forward Aleksas Bieliauskas, sophomore Jack Robison and true freshmen true freshman Zach Kinziger, Hayden Jones and Will Garlock are also forecasted to assume some of the bench responsibilities for the Badgers this fall. BYU will return star Richie Saunders, who dropped 25 against the Badgers in the NCAA Tournament, and starting center Keba Keita. Kevin Young's most significant asset will be freshman small forward A.J. Dybantsa, a five-star recruit and projected No. 1 pick of the 2026 NBA draft. Dybantsa's pull has already landed BYU non-conference games against Villanova, UConn, Wisconsin and Clemson. Advertisement Wisconsin is looking to build off its final 27-10 record during the 2024-25 slate, a season which culminated in a Big Ten tournament title game appearance and No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The test against BYU's talent will serve as an indicator of how well Gard's new pieces can coalesce early in the season. Wisconsin's November schedule also includes a high-profile four-team tournament in San Diego, California -- the Rady Children's Invitational. What Greg Gard said about Wisconsin basketball's 2025 non-conference game against BYU
Wisconsin basketball head coach Greg Gard shared his views on his team's recently scheduled nonconference matchup against the BYU Cougars on Tuesday. Roughly one week after reports surfaced regarding the Nov. 21 bout against the Cougars in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the Utah Jazz's Delta Center, the program officially announced the game with a press release. Advertisement "We're really excited that we're able to schedule this game with BYU," UW head coach Greg Gard told "Our game last year was one of the best of the NCAA Tournament and I think both fanbases will enjoy seeing a rematch this season. We have always tried to challenge ourselves in the non-conference schedule to prepare the team for Big Ten play and beyond and this game certainly will do so." The Badgers will certainly gear up for another highly anticipated test against Kevin Young's crew. The Cougars secured a 91-89 victory in the most recent contest between the two teams on March 22, which featured a 37-point performance from former star Badger John Tonje and a 25-tally finish from BYU veteran Richie Saunders. While Tonje will not return to the hardwood for the Badgers in Utah, the Cougars will return Saunders, send out starting center Keba Keita and welcome in freshman small forward A.J. Dybantsa, a five-star recruit and projected No. 1 pick of the 2026 NBA draft. UW, meanwhile, projects to start former San Diego State guard Nick Boyd, Virginia wing Andrew Rhode and Portland forward Austin Rapp alongside two returning starters in John Blackwell and center Nolan Winter. The Badgers' non-conference slate will also include a neutral-site match against the Villanova Wildcats at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee on December 19th, an exhibition against the Oklahoma Sooners on Oct. 24 in Milwaukee and an appearance in the Rady's Children's Invitational in late November. Advertisement Games outside the Big Ten have traditionally enabled the Badgers to gauge where they stand against potential NCAA Tournament participants down the line. Those games also allow Gard to experiment with rotations and evaluate how his athletes perform alongside one another. With Dybantsa at the helm for BYU, Wisconsin's Nov. 21 bout vs. the Cougars will also draw eyeballs. The battle is expected to be the first of a home-and-home, with BYU set to travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 2026. Before then, Gard and company will look to notch an early signature win to start the 2025-26 regular season.
