Nalwadi was architect of egalitarian society: Mandya DC

Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara on Wednesday referred to the Mysuru Maharaja, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, as the architect of an egalitarian society and social justice, who envisioned a fair society. The maharaja established the Backward Classes Commission and implemented reservations for the uplift of the backward communities, he stated. Speaking after the inauguration of the Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Jayanti celebration at the Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar auditorium, he said that the maharaja's contributions are such that future generations will continue to remember him. He served the people in a way that they remember him every day. Even during the British era, among nearly 600 princely states, he was a distinguished ruler. People from Mysuru, Mandya, and Hassan regions keep portraits of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in their homes and worshipped him. He expressed happiness that the maharaja was responsible for Mandya district becoming agriculturally dominant. It is also due to him that Bengaluru, now recognised globally as the Silicon City and the first Asian city to have electric streetlights, earned such reputations. Noticing his developmental works, Mahatma Gandhi honoured him with the title 'Rajashri' (Saintly King), he stated. Special pujas at royal cemetery Mysuru: As part of the 141st birth anniversary of Mysuru's king Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, special pujas were performed at Madhuvana, the royal cemetery, in the city on Wednesday. Mysuru Palace Board deputy director TS Subramanya, Urs community leader Amaranatha Raje Urs, Karnataka Senapade president Tejesh Lokesh Gowda, and others were present. They offered floral tribute to the Maharaja and recalled his contribution.

Lower-level government staff given creamy layer exemption across Karnataka

BENGALURU: The Karnataka government has issued a circular giving exemption from creamy layer to candidates in government service at lower-level posts. Interestingly, the Backward Classes Commission in its recommendations based on Socio Economic and Educational Survey (SES-2015) had recommended applying the creamy layer to the OBCs which was also a subject in the Friday's agenda of the cabinet. But the circular was issued a day earlier, on Thursday, to give direct recruitment under Article 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution, if the candidates belonging to Category 2A, 2B, 3A, 3 B category, if they have stipulated-specified period of experience in the posts at the lower level, in such a case the creamy layer rule will not apply to them, the Backward Classes Department clarified in a circular issued on May 8. Therefore, in order to exempt the candidates belonging to these categories in the service, check the relevant documents and take action to issue caste certificates, it instructed the tahsildars. The decision helps the children of government employees at lower level posts to avail quota benefits for education and employment. There was an exemption of creamy layer for SC/ST and category I candidates in the past and the government has now extended the same to the OBCs. The income limit for determining the creamy layer status for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Karnataka is Rs 8 lakh per annum. If a person's annual income is above this threshold, they are not eligible for OBC reservations in employment or education.

MBC leaders slam new quota, caste inaccuracies in Karnataka census

BENGALURU: Karnataka's More and Most Backward Caste (MBCs) leaders came together under the leadership of actor-activist Chetan Ahimsa on Thursday, to criticise the Backward Classes Commission, and denounce what they said was 'betrayal of social justice.' Terming the newly-introduced 1B reservation category 'unscientific, unjust, and politically motivated', speakers accused the Commission of bypassing academic and employment data and educational statistics to fabricate the category for political convenience. 'This is not social justice,' declared one speaker. MBC nomadic communities demanded their own scientific subclassification. Actor Chetan Ahimsa said that while the Karnataka Socio-Economic & Educational Survey (SES-2015) was billed as a tool for social justice, it is looking more like caste manipulation. Ahimsa pointed to the sudden formation of 1B category in April 2025, which grants 12 per cent reservation to 80 castes, including the Kuruba community, to which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah belongs. He questioned why castes previously under Groups 1 and 2A were reshuffled, and communities like Kurubas (formerly 2A) were placed with some of the state's most vulnerable, such as Devadasis and Hallaki Vokkaligas. 'The math doesn't add up,' he said. '1B has a population of 73.9 lakh, smaller than 2A's 77.7 lakh, yet gets 2 per cent more reservation. What justifies this?'

With caste conundrum on backburner, Siddaramaiah likely to focus on admin

BENGALURU: Contentious caste issues have come in handy for Siddaramaiah to consolidate his position both as Chief Minister and a champion of AHINDA communities. The tabling of the Socio Economic and Educational Survey (SES-2015) report and the recommendation of the Backward Classes Commission to restructure the Backward Classes quota in the cabinet for discussion and commitment to implement the internal reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs), were aimed at benefiting the AHINDA communities. With the backing of Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader and LoP in Lok Sabha, to table SES-2015 and the Supreme Court's Aug.1, 2024, judgment allowing the states to implement the internal quota for the SCs, the CM was poised to strengthen his position. A section of castes within the SC category were opposing the internal quota for decades but Siddaramaiah sensed his opportunity with the apex court's judgment, according to political analysts. Even as the two dominant castes, Veerashaiva Lingayats and Vokkaligas, opposed the SES-2015 dubbing it as unscientific, the Centre's announcement of adding enumeration of caste as part of the national census is likely to dampen the is unlikely to disturb Siddaramaiah from his position, said a Congress legislator belonging to SC community. But other sources within Congress predict that once Siddaramaiah completed two-and-half years as CM in October, the issue of change of guard would resurface. The decision, however, would be in the hands of Rahul and AICC president Mallikarjuna Kharge, also hailing from Karnataka.

Somanna calls for fresh caste survey, demands Siddaramaiah withdraw current report

Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V Somanna has demanded that the state government conduct a fresh survey on castes in Karnataka. He demanded Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to withdraw the the existing caste census report. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Somanna said the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey report is not done transparently. 'There is a need for a fresh survey. The state government is playing with the sentiments of people through this report,' he said. Somanna said that while the then chairperson of the Backward Classes Commission, H Kantharaju, did not sign the report, the present report is same as the Kantharaju Commission's report. He demanded that Siddaramaiah conduct the survey scientifically. When asked about a second airport for Bengaluru, Somanna indirectly pointed out that even New Delhi has just one airport, with three terminals. 'If all the terminals are at one place, it will be easier for passengers,' he opined. Meanwhile, the Yeshwanthpur and Cantonment railway stations are being redeveloped. Somanna said they want four railway terminals in four directions in Bengaluru, including one near Kempegowda International Airport. The Centre will implement it.
