Amid student surge, teacher shortage more acute in Telangana
HYDERABAD: Over a month into the new academic year, most government schools across Telangana continue to function with an acute shortage of teachers, despite a GO issued in May detailing revised staffing norms. The GO stipulates that primary sections (Classes 1 to 5) with 1–10 students should have one teacher, and those with 11–60 students should be assigned two. However, this has not been implemented on the ground. Several schools with 15–30 students are currently being run by a single teacher. A similar situation persists in upper primary and high schools, where many subject teacher posts remain vacant. According to officials, around 11,000 teacher posts were filled in 2023 under the Directorate of School Education (DSE). Since then, no new recruitment notification has been issued. Nearly 15,000 teaching positions remain unfilled across the state. This comes even as the government's Badi Bata (school enrolment drive) added nearly two lakh new students to government schools this academic year. However, teacher deployment to match the increased enrolment is still pending. Recent data shows that in Hyderabad alone, about 1,000 teaching posts remain vacant, including 35 headmasters and 37 senior English teachers. In Sangareddy, 2,667 government schools serve over 59,000 students with just 4,479 teachers. Similar shortages have been reported in Khammam and Karimnagar, where schools with 50–60 students reportedly have only one teacher. The situation has worsened further following a wave of recent retirements, with those posts also lying vacant.

Teacher turns math into play, boosting school attendance, enrollment
HYDERABAD/ MEDAK : Mathematics often sends students running in the opposite direction, but one government school teacher is trying to change that. Ravi Raj, a mathematics teacher at Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School (MPUPS) in Admapur, Narsapur mandal, uses his YouTube channel 'Raviraj Master' to make maths fun and approachable for children who struggle with the subject. Ravi started his channel during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, posting videos to help students understand basic maths concepts at a time when classes shifted online. But it was in 2024, after he joined MPUPS Admapur, that he realised the scale of the problem. He realised that many students were unable to grasp basic concepts or solve simple problems. This, he noticed, was linked to poor attendance. Determined to find a solution, he introduced board games and puzzles into his lessons, blending learning with play. The approach worked — attendance, Ravi Raj says, rose from 45% to 95%. What began as a handful of videos soon grew into a large online resource. Today, his channel hosts over 1,600 videos and has about 1.5 million subscribers. 'The videos are not monetised. I see this as social service, not a source of income,' he says. His lessons have drawn praise from students across India and abroad, many of whom leave comments about how the content helps them. The impact shows at his school too. During this year's Badi Bata, this MPUPS saw enrolment climb from 53 students last year to 73 — and numbers may reach 100 in the coming weeks. Outside the classroom, the 43-year-old works with voluntary organisations to improve facilities. New benches, a lab, notebooks, ties and belts have been provided, with the teacher often spending from his own pocket. His efforts have drawn attention. Recently, Education Secretary Yogita Rana invited him to help develop MPUPS Admapur as a model school with state government support.

1.89L students prefer government schools to private rivals in Telangana
HYDERABAD: Over 1.89 lakh students have enrolled in government schools across Telangana for the 2025–26 academic year under the Badi Bata programme, marking a 20% rise in admissions compared to last year. According to data accessed by TNIE from the Education department, a total of 1,89,451 students were registered during the special enrolment drive. Among them, 83,888 students joined Class 1, while 31,096 students shifted from private to government schools. The drive, which will continue until June 30, is expected to further boost admissions. Notably, nearly 1,980 government schools had recorded zero enrolments last year. Government teachers said that there has been a notable increase in enrolment for this academic year. Many students from private schools, particularly from Hyderabad, are enrolling in English-medium schools. Also, several districts — Rangareddy, Karimnagar, Warangal and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri— have received an overwhelming response. Owing to the lack of seats, some schools were forced to install a 'Admissions Closed' board on their premises. One such school is Mandal Parishad Primary School (MPPS) in Raghunathpalli of Jangaon district. 'Last year, only 48 got enrolled, but this year over 126 students sought admission in the school. The total strength of the school now stands at 174,' a school representative said. Apart from this, some villages — Ushannapalli in Karimnagar, Aipoor in Nalgonda, and a village in Suryapet — do not seem to entertain the idea of private school buses entering their locality. They are allegedly restricting the buses, saying that they want all their wards to join the government schools.

Hyderabad Collector urges more enrolment in government schools
Hyderabad District Collector Anudeep Durishetty on Thursday urged parents to ensure 100% classroom attendance for their children and encouraged students to pursue academic excellence with determination. Speaking to the students at Syed Murtuza Hussaini Memorial Government Upper Primary School at Langar Houz in Golconda, the Collector said the Telangana government has been prioritising public education by investing crores of rupees to improve infrastructure and learning outcomes in government schools. The Collector also distributed uniforms and books to the students. 'Education is the real jewel. No matter how much wealth one has, without education, it is meaningless,' he said, addressing students and parents. He pointed out that each student of a government school in the State benefits from government expenditure of over ₹1 lakh annually, covering uniforms, teacher salaries, midday meals, textbooks, notebooks, and workbooks. He also appealed to parents to spread awareness about the facilities available at government schools and motivate them to enrol their children. 'We want to see an increase in new admissions under the Badi Bata (Back to School) campaign,' he said.
