Jun Hao needs to be 'consistently world class'
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 25 Leong Jun Hao once again beat a top 10 shuttler at this week's Singapore Open, but fans were left wishing for something more. And national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen wants to see consistency from him. Jun Hao toppled Indonesia's world No. 5 Jonatan Christie 21-16, 21-19, but fell to Thailand's world No. 2 Kunlavut Vittidsarn 21-13, 21-11 in the quarter-finals. "Beating a top player is very important and at the same time, qualifying for a quarter-final in a World Tour 750 event gives him the opportunity to play another world-class player, Kunlavut," said Jonassen. "I believe consistency is the area which needs to be improved on. This ability to slightly adjust to another opponent with different strengths and weaknesses will help Jun Hao progress." Jun Hao, who received a walkover from China's world No. 27 Lei Lan Xi in the Singapore Open first round, upstaged Jonatan for the third time in five meetings. Jonassen commended Jun Hao for overcoming a slow start to deal with an aggressive Jonatan who recently turned professional. "I am truly happy with his performance and was surprised with the way he approached the game against Jonatan," said Jonassen. "I liked the aggression, his playing style and the attitude on court, but at the same time, showed the patience that was needed. And he took the opportunity." Last November, Jun Hao beat a string of world's top 20 players — India's Lakshya Sen (No. 17), Japan's Koki Watanabe (No. 14) and Kodai Naraoka (No. 8), and Jonatan before losing to China's world No. 4 Li Shi Feng in the Kumamoto Masters final in Japan. That remains his career best result, and the quarter-final in Singapore was his best effort this year. Aaron-Wooi Yik keep flag flying at Singapore Open
Men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik went through after four other Malaysian pairs were eliminated. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : National men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik stormed into the semi-finals of the Singapore Open with a tough 22-20, 21-17 win over Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun at the Singapore Indoor Stadium today. The pair, bronze medallists at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, took only 33 minutes to dispose of world No 7 duo Wei Chong-Kai Wun. Aaron admitted that the first game was 'quite challenging', saying they faced several crucial points in their effort to defeat their compatriots. 'I think after the first game, we were more calm and relaxed. As you can see, it was much closer in the first game … we had three game points. Luckily, we won the first game,' he said. In tomorrow's semi-final, Aaron-Wooi Yik will take on Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty of India who defeated Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani 21-17, 21-15. Other Malaysians in the tournament failed to make the semi-finals. Earlier, top seeds Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai went down fighting 19-21, 22-20, 17-21 to Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran in a tightly contested 64-minute mixed doubles match. National men's singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao failed to advance to the semi-finals after being outplayed 13-21, 11-21 by second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand. There was no joy for Malaysia in women's doubles either when Pearly Tan-M Thinaah capitulated 21-14, 22-24, 14-21 to China's Zhang Shu Xian-Jia Yi Fan. It was Pearly-Thinaah's second straight loss to Shu Xian-Yi Fan, who also prevailed in the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters last week.

Srikanth Kidambi vs Yushi Tanaka Live Score, Badminton Malaysia Masters 2025: Can Indian shuttler make his way to the final?
Srikanth vs Tanaka Live Score, Malaysia Masters 2025, Badminton Semifinal Live Scorecard Online Today Match: Srikanth Kidambi will take on Yushi Tanaka of Japan in the Malaysia Masters semifinal on Saturday hoping to repeat Friday's spirited performance against Toma Junior Popov of France where he prevailed 24-22, 17-21, 22-20 in the quarterfinal. The 32-year-old who is a 2021 World Championships silver medallist, notched up five straight wins starting from the qualification rounds to reach the business end of a BWF World Tour event after struggling for form for the past couple of years. Srikanth's semifinal opponent Tanaka beat France's Christo Popov, brother of Toma Junior, 21-18 16-21 21-6 in another men's singles quarterfinal duel on Saturday. Tanaka had earlier beaten HS Prannoy in straight games in the second round. 'It's been a while since I've won this many matches in a tournament and I hope I can continue to do so. I've always been trying to better myself and this win just proves that whatever I'm doing is working,' said Srikanth, the former world no.1, who had won four titles in a stellar 2017 season and was part of India's historic Thomas Cup triumph in 2022. Kidambi Srikanth in action vs Toma Popov at the Malaysia Masters 2025. (Badminton Photo) Kidambi Srikanth uses smart strategy to beat Popov, enters Malaysian Masters semis Since the time when Kidambi Srikanth was 25 — and his 25th year was indeed memorable with four Tour titles in 2017 — defenses of men's singles shuttlers have improved exponentially. Six of eight quarter-finalists at the Malaysian Masters were under age 26, and the ruthless young brigade now, is bound to ask questions of his attacking game, that he hardly encountered back in the day. Toma Junior Popov, a combative French shuttler of Bulgarian heritage, ranked No.18 in the world, has an entrenched attacking game laced with tricks. But it's his stubborn retrieving defense that was wielding the power to neutralize the vintage Srikanth attacking game, which hasn't forgotten its sense of creativity and adventure even if he's ranked 65.

Eogene and Ling Ching capture titles in Slovenia
Previous Next KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shuttlers Eogene Ewe Eon and Wong Ling Ching won a title each at the Slovenia Open on Sunday. Eogene captured the men's singles title while Ling Ching bagged the women's singles title in the International Series-level tournament — their first senior achievements. World No. 113 Eogene beat South Korea's world No. 252 Yoo Tae Bin 21-19, 12-21, 21-17 in a hard-fought, hour-long final. The win came as a much-needed morale boost for Eogene, who suffered exits in five previous tournaments earlier this year. World No. 100 Ling Ching enjoyed a more straightforward path to her title, dispatching Indonesia's world No. 140 Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-16, 21-15 in just 38 minutes. The Sarawak Malaysia Games champion's Slovenia success is a vindication of her decision to resume her badminton career. Ling Ching left the national set-up in November to focus on her studies, but rejoined the Academy Badminton Malaysia earlier this year. Eogene and Ling Ching will next compete in the Austria Open — which begins on Thursday.
